In this coaching course filmed exclusively for CV Academy in January 2022, Brentford B assistant coach Sam Saunders took his players through a series of practices designed to develop their ability to penetrate a low block.
The session begins with a practice that consists of a number of attacking patterns of play that train the players to use switches of play, wide overloads and quick combinations to break down a low block. The second practice is a break-out possession game that encourages the players to be patient in possession while also looking for opportunities to play centrally and through the lines to create goalscoring chances. This practice also stresses the importance of the counter-press when losing possession against a team in a low block.

Used to love him when I went to Griffin Park. Technically fantastic for the league and he could bang in a free kick

when you let them play freely the did not do even one of the movements you taught them. why do you think is that ?

Because they are not robots, this is a training purpose and as footballers once ball gets to opponents final 3rd they should be able to read the game for themselves, if you think pep dictates every play city does to score goals your crazy, it’s called freedom and that’s what makes the game beautiful the unpredictability, coaches give options such as cut it back, play it with pace, shoot when have the chance etc but can’t calculate every movement bc oppositions change and the game changes within the game

This is about giving players attacking options, it’s up to the players to decide what is best in the scenario
