I respect Sam Witwer’s opinions more than Ryan Johnson. Sam’s acting only made Star Wars better, while Ryan almost destroyed it.

Mark Hamil has said the character he played in The Last Jedi wasn’t Luke. He even had to call him by a different name cause he had no semblance of Luke in him.

I'd go a bit farther than he just didn't do his homework, he simply didn't care. Johnson would respond, “No, not at all. My biggest problem with Luke isn’t so much that he “sees through the lies of the Jedi”, but instead rather the execution. He had good points in terms of the flaws of the order, but the fact that they came from a place of fear and cowardice takes away from what he’s trying to say. From the moment he threw his lightsaber away, the credibility of his thoughts took a huge hit. If they had chosen a more respectful angle, the focus of the movie could’ve been instead on Luke and Rey forging a path in the grey together, developing and defining both characters, instead of seeing an iconic hero wallowing in his own filth.

Lets be honest here - the entire sequel trilogy is the result of the director/writers having very different visions of how to evolve the star wars license - JJ Abrams idea was to slavishly copy everything in the original trilogy, albeit with the result being a lesser retelling of the original trilogy. Rian Johnson's idea was to throw the baby out with the bath-water, trying to simultaneously critique everything the star wars universe did, be extremely different whilst attempting a bare resemblance to Star Wars. The tragedy is that both missed significant opportunities to advance the saga - Legends for all its warts and mis-steps did significantly evolve the saga in new directions, resulting in a veritable treasure trove of ideas to review and examine their success. Instead what we got was a schizophrenic retelling of Luke Skywalker's story.

Well rian already came out a while back and said he couldn’t have cared less about the lore or anything else. He just wanted to make a movie with a star wars backdrop.

I've listened to him on a few Podcasts over the years and he has a very keen insight into Star Wars and it's characters and the stories in general. When he makes a comment like this, it holds a weight that's much heavier than from the regular fan. He's an actor, but one that's been with the Franchise for a lot of years, coming through from Starkiller and moving on to voice acting rolls throughout the series. He's worked with Lucas and many of the other directors close within the franchise which gives him a much better foundation to comment on.

So, Darth Maul, the Emperor, Starkiller and Luke himself dissed him.

I love how many Star Wars actors like Sam Witwer and Mark Hamill are currently stepping up for us fans. Makes you know that there is still hope in Star Wars.

The problem with the sequel trilogy overall is that it represents what happens when fans know a story and world better than the filmmakers. And it's a perfect demonstration of why you shouldn't bounce a trilogy between different directors/storytellers without a clear plan of how things should play out.

This wasn't the first time Sam Witwer dissed the writing. He talked about how Luke's actions doesn't make any sense such as going to the FIRST Jedi Temple to "die".

He's absolutely right, Rian obviously doesn't care for Star Wars, so he didn't even try to make SW8 good.

After watching the final season of Clone Wars and The Mandalorian, all I say is that I wish Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau would have done them instead of J. J. Abrams and Ryan Johnson. We would have gotten a much better story and a new take, without sacrificing the essence of Star Wars.

Well, I'll be honest. I hated TLJ. I'm not going to say it did everything wrong, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Then again, if I were getting paid by Disney, I'd certainly put it in similar words, but I wouldn't say I didn't not hate it either.

When the dude that has played some of the most interesting characters in the starwars universe calls you out on your job directing a starwars movie you know you messed up.

The thing is that Luke’s character arc has always been the arc of pure compassion. In the original trilogy, he makes every decision whether it be good or bad out of compassion... in order to go the right way, not the Jedi or Sith way. There should’ve been so much more to Luke’s reasoning for his self-isolation.

Bad movie, terrible star wars which feels disconnected from the franchise.

I was there! He's a very wise dude, I was surprised by his take on the many topics he covered.

I'd rather have bad CGI with a coherent story (Episode 1) over great CGI with a story without direction (Episode 8). Episodes 2-7 are great.

...in the livestream he was very respectful of the other directors and said he thought Rian was a great filmmaker, he just didn’t think it fit in George’s Star Wars. People are blowing this out of proportion. I’ve seen some people who love the sequel trilogy tear him apart for these comments and it’s ridiculous. Also it’s his opinion and he’s allowed to express it, especially when he’s being so very considerate of fans who did like TLJ/the sequel trilogy.

The biggest whole in the sequel trilogy for me is the lack of Anakin/Vader. I get that we don't know how force ghosts work, but after Anakin was redeemed in ROTJ, I assumed he would help guide Luke. If Anakin was around, Ben probably wouldn't have turned, and Luke wouldn't be so afraid of the dark side. All the trailers totally leaned towards Luke being grey, even if that meant he was no longer a Jedi.

This should come as a major blow to the delusional Disney execs and Lucasfilm hacks who thought that Rian Johnson should be involved with another trilogy, ep8 was bad enough before this, but now it's been validated by someone who has worked with multiple Star Wars directors over the years and knows his stuff. Sam Witwer is truly a star wars prodigy and deserves respect for being honest and straight forward in an era where you're paid not to be.
