It’s a great product - really foolproof in use. The “click” engages on 22 lbs of pressure, then utilise the windlass. To those saying they won’t hear the noise of the click on a screaming patient or loud environment - you feel the click as well, it’s very noticeable. Like all things, Train with it and its second nature.

I have replaced the CATS in some of my kits by the SAM XT because it is really easy to use and quicker. Unfortunately, it doesn't pack as flat (same length or even a little shorter, though), so I could not fit them in a couple of my really tight kits. The click technology (which must be reset each time after use by pulling the enclosure up) is very intuitive. All you need to do is pull steadily on the strap one-handed, or even two-handed on the leg if you want, until you hear the click. The click comes on faster than I thought, and I'm able to shave 2-3 seconds off in that initial phase compared to the CAT with no worry about slack. Also, you technically don't need to attach it with the velcro to itself to secure it, the prongs that come out do a really good job. No need to readjust like a CAT if you have doubts and think you could get it tighter or didn't get it tight enough. When it clicks, it's tight enough, always and on the first try if applied correctly. Really fun to use and really fast. Windlass is solid and metal. + UPDATE: after training with the SAM XT and about 15 applications on the arms (biceps, high) alone, I noticed that when put on bare skin, some skin seems to get trapped in the buckle and you get bitten by the prongs which, although not very painful, pinch the skin and leave red marks, even puncturing the skin on a few occasions. It would not matter in a real situation, but in training, it can get quite annoying. This is a huge disappointment. I tried different position on the biceps, and except for placing the tourniquet so that it faces inward, pulling the strap outside the biceps instead of inside (not the way it is supposed to be used), it does this. You don't feel it on clothes, and it is not a problem on bare skin on legs. I wonder if others have had the same experience.

Personally, I like this one. My only trouble with the all velcro ones is that blood, clots, dirt and debris can adversely affect its performance. You can feel the click when it snaps in. We are in the process of training 330 medics on it and so far the response has been very positive. Good video.

I personally edc a rats tourniquet, generally under 15 bucks per tourniquet and virtually no minimum limb size, making it better for young children/animals. Super quick to apply and theres a dozen ways to carry one. Highly recommended by me.
@harknesskyle
@harknesskyle 4 года назад
@@alexandersimcox2079 please tell me this is a joke, the rats is not CoTCCC approved, commonly fails to occlude an artery, and even when it does work it commonly can cause nerve damage due to the narrowness of each band
@alexandersimcox2079
@alexandersimcox2079 4 года назад
@@harknesskyle it's better than nothing and carries extremely small. I also edc a sof-t wide on my ankle. I was pointing out how cheap they are and how easy they carry. Someone trying to carry 4 or 5 cats on them will not only look crazy, but be extremely uncomfortable. 4 or 5 rats can be concealed easily for edc. They have the additional benefit of being better for smaller limbs, like for dogs and children where a sof-t or cat wouldnt compress evenly or at all. I'm not saying that they're on the same level as a proper cat or sof-t, but I'm saying that they are an option. As for the nerve damage, I'd much rather survive an encounter that's tourniquet worthy with nerve damage than die because I didnt feel like carrying a bulkier tq. Additionally, I dont think that an injury that requires a tourniquet happens often without also nerve damage
@alexandersimcox2079
@alexandersimcox2079 4 года назад
Additionally, it's a hell of a lot more intuitive for someone you may be with to understand how to apply vs a cat or sof-t. It's basically a glorified bungee cord and even a 10 year old could figure out how to apply, while the other tourniquets are substantially more confusing.
@harknesskyle
@harknesskyle 4 года назад
@@alexandersimcox2079 I will concede that for children and dogs it has a place, however claiming a cat or sof-t is too complicated for someone to understand is a bit silly Even if they can figure out the mechanics of the rats, theyll likely be unable to get it sufficiently tight unless theyve practiced and know how it works Price is an advantage with a rats, but is your life worth the $15 you save by getting a less effective torniquet?

hey skinnymedic i'm a paramedic student from Australia. When you put the tourniquet on do you generally go 4 inch's above the wound and put another on at the top of the extremity if it doesn't stop bleeding or do you go straight to the top of the extremity just in case of arterial spasm. in your experience what have you found is the best ? i have heard both the different theory's and not quite sure what one is best.
@johngalt234

In America, standards are typically set forward by the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care. It specifies the following: _"Apply directly to the skin 2-3 inches above the bleeding site. If bleeding is not controlled with the first tourniquet, apply a second tourniquet side-by-side with the first."_ See cotccc.com/wp-content/uploads/TCCC-Guidelines-for-Medical-Personnel-170131.pdf Additionally, there is another RU-vidr who talks about this sort of stuff. His name is Jay Paisley, and he was a medic for Delta Force and a member of the CoTCCC board. If you ask him questions, he is very likely to respond. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RgEO-sRwdAs.html.

Looks like SAM is using similar tech to their pelvic splint system for this. I'm not convinced that "standardizing" the required TQ tightness to a plastic buckle and to one windlass spin is helping the products versatility. I'm imagining that buckle engaging before I m able to pull the strap as tight as I want it.

The stat is completely untested and incredibly difficult to tighten because it offers no mechanical advantage. It's far too thin as well, meaning more pain, more tissue damage, because it needs to be tighter than a thicker tourniquet would. So, in addition to being incredibly difficult to tighten, it needs to be tighter than the average tq. Not a good combo.

Not in the same leauge as the CAT. The amount of tension you can apply with the winlass, seems very limited. Someone might apply it a bit too loose under stress and need to start over. I don't see this happening with the CAT.
@JoshGlastra
@JoshGlastra Год назад
This is the same issue you'd have with the CAT though right? They are basically identical, this one just positively locks. the CAT can slip before you wrap it. If it clicks, you are only 2 ish turns away. You also don't even have to click it, and then just twist like a CAT. I have used both.
@montepr803
@montepr803 Год назад
@@JoshGlastra I don't believe so. By his explanation it seems this tq has much less tension room for final winlass tightening after synching tight. Meaning the CAT is much more forgiving. If it's not broken why even try something else? Stick with the gold standard. I haven't used this one personally though I must be honest.
@JoshGlastra
@JoshGlastra Год назад
@@montepr803 I just think it's a better design with no real drawbacks, since you use it like a regular CAT without even clicking it. It's worth noting that it's TCCC certified just like the CAT, so it's passed the same challenging real world tests along with the SOF-T, and a couple others. That should lend confidence in the design, at least from my point of view.
