Thank you Janos for explaining benefits of single driver . I will stick with single driver but work on improving power supply and preamp stage .

Hi Anil, good plan! 👍👍

IME, I find that paralleled triode Driver Tubes are more of a benefit to SQ (denser tone without the so-called ‘blurring’) compared to Paralleled Output Tubes for SE.. BTW Janos, I figured out most of the Ampex mods you did based on your older vids.. Like the 6SN7 splitter B+ section (20uF -> 0.32H/600mA -> 140uF) which also feeds the 807 Screens.. But there are details that weren’t explcitly clear (to me at least😅), like the additional R/C decoupling values before the Gas Regs feeding the screens, and what were the specific changes in R and C of the output stage B+ supply section (with the stock 80uF caps in series + balancing R’s..).. And if the 20uF/17k decoupling for the input stage was also kept as is..

Hi Rick, yes, the main B+ is 20uF/0.32H/140uF, and also I changed the rectifier from 5U4G to 5R4GY. I took the gas tubes off, and run it in triode mode, if I recall -50Vg for the 807. The screen is connected to plate through about 3.2K resistance (2W KOA Speers - exact value not important, about 2-4K). (Two resistors in series to increase voltage tolerance.) The phase splitter/ input section is decoupled by 25K / 50uF. ; ) ✨✨👍

@@realworldaudio Oh cool, now triode wired on the outputs.. Thanks for the details re: the change to 5R4Y and the Plate to Screen R tips.. So that is one decoupling cell (25k/50uF) for the 6sn7 splitter at ~304VDC, and then another decoupling cell (25k/50uF) for the 5879 pentode input at ~216VDC.. Many thanks, Janos..

Speed ( real energy delivery on transients ) will not speed up the music as it is to often experienced with medium/lower quality amplifiers as if the amplifier is running behind its breath.......or having those heavy feet....ON the contrary.....It will ease out the tempo being perceived more natural by the nature of being closer to the real sound/music experience ! Often experienced when one thought that more capacitance should be the wonder solution and it is not ! The right power supply will give life to the notes ............they will live the full life of their creation , from being born, living and dying out ................and your soul will open to their message . doubling the transient demand with two triodes will double the stress/bursts on to the windings of the power transformer , this will shoot back trough the whole power supply , diodes/rectifier will endure it also ..................on to the music ..... All is allways question of ..............HARMONY ................the right amount of it all.... When all falls into the window of gthat harmony ...........one will listen to the music .........instead of analizing a system or comparing components......... Nature will ease the soul............all other will excite or deceive....

Exactly! Not enough capacitance will yield overshooting and harshness, increasing it will tame it but slow it at the same time. Comes a point of balance, and then adding more capacitance will just slooow it down.... bigger takes longer to charge... I tried a ridiculously high capacitance (1600uF charged at 450VDC) as an experiment as the last reservoir section. Played Jean Philip Rameau, and it sounded decent (although a little muffled) up to the point when there was a timpani strike. The timpani was huge and explosive, and made the flea-power Darling amplifier sound as if it was an enormous amplifier with nearly unlimited power - yet, for the next 20 seconds everything became MUTED, all the sounds smeared and whispering..... until the giant capacitor recharged.....

@@realworldaudio Yes that's exactly what happens Janos ! That's also what a technician will design to fullfill the marketing hype..........but a skilled experienced non engineer will design on his experience and with the experience it out.................;believeing his ears and soul ...........and learn from it as FACTS..........and not with the engineering straitjacket on....... In fact there are two solutions................the right values............and the endless energy ....all between those values or lower is compromised. Older amplifiers with asthonishing ( considered to low by today's standards) often are qualified as being musical up to today...........when restoring those vintage amps ..........to many times the sound and musicality is RUINED after the restoration. Those amps were build and listend to...............the values of those days are now explained by enlightend audiophiles and engineers as being the result of the low values of capacitors in that era ( which is partially true ). Wrong huge capacitors and to big the coulpling capacitors can also lead to blocking the coupling capacitors for a fraction of time ............the amplifier seems then to CHOKE itself........... Have a lovely day Janos and thanks for sharing your passion...

Janos, instead of paralleling the output tubes , could you not run the stereo amplifier as a monoblock and run in bridge mode, one channel out of phase so as to cancel out distortions The PSU will not be affected as per your description.
@realworldaudio
@realworldaudio 2 года назад
Neat idea! However, the other channel being engaged still draws current and drains the resources. Driving an out-of-phase signal will even out the distortions on the power supply, but there's still the doubled drain....
@TheRealPaulRR
@TheRealPaulRR 2 года назад
@@realworldaudio agreed, but the drain is as per one channel of the amplifier. So the same Power supply is used as standard, just two of them for each side of the bridge. So transient and headroom is preserved. Idea came from Amp Camp amp
@realworldaudio
@realworldaudio 2 года назад
@@TheRealPaulRR Wait.. are they using the same power supply? Compared to using 1 channel only, right?
@TheRealPaulRR
@TheRealPaulRR 2 года назад
@@realworldaudio So the issue is each amplifier uses the standard power supply. So if it’s a stereo power amplifier, it is reconfigured as a bridged mono amplifier. You just need another one for the other channel. Or two mono amplifiers each with its own power supply. So double the power, but each amplifier uses the most dynamic power supply as the original amplifier.

Question: I want to have a legal power cable in my room feeding my inwall plug. (a threaded cable instead of the normal junk solidcore inwall cable) I am talking about a cable like Oyaide Tunami. Reason: because it sounds more refined/3d/integrated. And my electrician told me he could somehow pull a cable into my room that is normal solidcore cable like everybody has, and then create something in my room that isn't a electrical panel. I think it was a circuit breaker in my room, where he manually can connect this cable to that, so it feeds my inwall plug. But he seemed very hesitant but told me he could do it in a legal way. What do you think, can this be done in a legal way and have I maybe misunderstood him? My 2 friends have already done this and say that the sound difference was night and day. And that legally you are not allowed to do it on the electrical panel, but if you instead move the problem into your room of the eltrical panel, then it is allowed.

Hi Larry, the legality changes from country to country, and in the case of USA, from state to state. I suspect that here in HI/USA if you obey the color code, the insulation rating, the AWG rating, then it is allowed to have cable other than the standard Romex. Also, a big part of legality is to have the installation certified by a licensed electrician. I am really careful about this, and kept everything in the wall to the letter of the code. In my case the distance from the panel to the room is quite a bit, and financially it would be impossible to install anything but the standard wire. I just went for the highest gauge the socket can accept... But yeah, would be quite a bit better to have high quality wire in the wall.
@realhi-fihelplarry8047
@realhi-fihelplarry8047 2 года назад
@@realworldaudio Try that experiment, by just having the usual cable over to your room. And then having 1 single single circuit breaker installed in your room by an electrician, and then put you own legal threaded power cable on like Oyaide Tunami or Lapp threaded cable for only like 10 USD per meter, from that circuit breaker to the inwall plug. I think you will be surprised on how much more natural the sound is.

This is such a good question ! I am in the proses of getting a SE 3a2/300b like amps now that I have gone passive crossover VOTT. The best option seems to be going for SE single tube design as I have the very high sensitivity ?

A 2A3 "should" be enough.... it is certainly enough for me, but I just got a reminder this weekend from my friends who listen at 100-120dB..... :) they want even the VOTT with 100W tube power...... 😂
