Such greatness. I saw him on a weekend in the early 70s, in one of those theaters -in-the-round, not the greatest venue for a talent of his intensity...he limped onstage , using crutches and apologized that he couldn't dance or even walk, he'd seriously injured his leg, his doctor wanted him to cancel and ice it, but if we'd forgive him, he would sit on a chair, prop up his leg with ice packs and sing for us. I'll never forget it, that small man on one chair in that big circular stage slowly turning, with his foot propped up, proceeded to give us 2 and a half hours of brilliant stagecraft, soaring vocals, and the most dazzling propulsion of pure star power I've ever witnessed...while remaining still, and, I'm sure, in considerable pain. Just a gesture or two every now and again -- and magnificent.
