Our parents cried the same tears because the world in '69 was full of dope and Jimi Hendrix, The world only gets worse because people only get worse. Yet with 8 billion people on earth now as opposed to 3 billion at that time people still think there is a need to have 2,3 and more kids overcrowding us even more. The world will never be good again until we stop basing our lives on greed. Does the world really need 3 or 4 kids from you or I? I think not....
Jim CatManDude Dude. Anyone can have as much kids as they want. It's more of the up bringing whereas a lot of parents fail to teach their own children. That's when disney comes in hand for lazy parents.
When you go back, please get in touch with me because I want to do the same. I can't stand 2013 and from the way the country and world are headed, the future is mighty, mighty bleak. God, please, make it 1972 again!!!
Bob smith - WHat the hell does being gay have to do with being friends with a singer? Singers have friends as well back in the day so what is your point?
This is in memory and a tribute to Gene Wilder, who passed away at the age of 83. The movie "Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory" will always be one of my favorites among his best. Wilder was married to Gilda Radner, who died of cancer in 1991. Did you know that Sammy was supposed to sing this song in the movie but the part was given to someone else. However, Sammy got his rewards by doing this with The Ray Conniff Singers for the MGM Records label. Again, a lasting tribute to both Sammy and Gene Wilder. I am sure they are doing this very song together.
Well, it kind of didn't turn out that way, however as I stated, Sammy and The Mike Curb Congregation (sorry, I was wrong about the background vocals being by the Ray Conniff Singers)) recorded this on April 15, 1972 for MGM Records. Sammy vocals were dubbed in later. The record was Number One for two weeks. Sammy may not have been in the movie, but his version of this song really stood out! I also liked "What Kind Of Fool Am I" because my dad did. Gene Wilder, I found out the next day, died from Alzheimer's disease in his home in Stamford, Connecticut with his wife of more than 14 years at his bedside. The final song Wilder heard was "Over The Rainbow" by Ella Fitzgerald.
I first heard this song in 1972 when I was young, I was in a station wagon in South Dakota...I was dreaming about going to a candy store. 1972....can I go back please!
Lovely rendition - although my feelings about this song were formed by the unforgettable performance in the Susie Diamond audition from the Fabulous Baker Boys (it's on here). Once you've heard it, it's in your brain forever.
Who can take a sunrise, sprinkle it with dew, cover it with choc'late, and a miracle or two? Who can take a rainbow, wrap it in a sigh, soak in the sun and make a groovy lemon pie? Oh, who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream, separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream? The Candy Man, oh the Candy Man can.
A great song by Sammy Davis, Jr.! This was a featured track on "American Top 40 - The '70s" (from May 6th, 1972), & was the #24 song. R.I.P., Sammy Davis, Jr..
Songs actually used to tell stories or talk about a person or character, now 90% of artists are making pretty much the same stuff. It's depressing that we've come so far, yet the stuff from decades before I was even born sounds both melodically and lyrically leagues better than anything on the radio now.
"The Handy Man Can" Ears so Big a Nose so ugly brought Mom tears Told this handy man had a heart of gold He cares his work is the best of all repairs Values he did uphold till he was very old Took care of affairs now one of those Millionaires #NeverGiveUp
