Sammy Hagar & Eddie Van Halen perform a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Most of the time he was just having fun out there. It was almost effortless to him, which is quite different from many other guitar virtuosos of the era.

That off the cuff solo in the song is insane.It's not even a solo it's an extension of the song.It takes the whole song with it.Incredible sound, chops and timing.Killer solo.

@@briannotafan3368 The legendary Kramer 5150 guitar was the GOAT. Most will point to the Frankenstrat as VH's greatest guitar, but it was just a testbed that led to the eventual Kramer 5150 design (heavily influenced by the '79 Bumblebee). He used that 5150 guitar from 1983-1989.

@@Fearzero Most of Edward's live solos were sloppy. He wasn't a very technically proficient player. He was more interested in feel. Even the famous Live Without a Net guitar solo had errors in it. It was part of his mystique that he had no problem with "mistakes" while he played. He said it was part of his "noodling" process. lol I think at Farm Aid he was really nervous stepping out from his Van Halen band comfort zone after the recent exit of Roth. He was still getting a feel for Hagar having his own guitar and being a good singer with a very different style than Dave. He was happy though.

@@johnboyce1916 he has never been one of my favorites just because his particular music blended in amongst others that had my attention. However, you don't get someone at his level often. I will also say he's probably the one person I'd chose to just have a nice meal and conversation with. He's always seems shockingly normal and kind. At least for someone called the red rocker lol

And the crazy thing is that it was just a fun and effortless solo for Eddie. Simple stuff to him. That was his normal, everyday riff back in that era but he still made it blend in perfectly with the song. It's like the guitar takes on its own voice when he plays a solo.

One of the many things I admire about Eddie is how much fun he’s having while performing. He always has a grin from ear to ear. The way he played so effortlessly and the the fact that he was having such a good time while doing it makes him one of if not the best.

Saw Sammy and the Circle last night 7-17-2021 at the festival of the lakes, Hammond, Indiana. They rocked and it felt like I traveled back in time. Sammy is awesome and he’s 73 years young. Incredible show.

I was so excited that Sammy joined VH after Dave left. I could not wait to hear what they were going to sound like, I was fan of both VH and Sammy. 6 months after this, we got the album 5150, one of their best with Sammy at vocal. Too bad the magic didn't last. Ed and Alex have their version of what happened, but Sammy's book sounds like the real version.

The amazing Eddie , the crazy , unexplainable , thing about him is his ability to jump in and out of that song with that style he's created and it's melodic and it seems as if it's just to easy. They only come around so often , I'm glad it was in my lifetime. EVH-R.I.P.

Eddie nunca tocou guitarra na vida meus caros. Ele simplesmente brincava de tocar guitarra, é diferente. Ele simplesmente humilhava todas elas sem dó nem piedade. Ele fazia qualquer canção da banda valer à pena, pois só as introduções e solos já eram suficientes pra vc comprar o disco ou ir ao show (tipo a Eruption, por exemplo). Não morreu apenas um músico qualquer do Mundo Rock, se foi uma lenda, um gênio, um ser iluminado. Diz a lenda que o Rock é coisa do Diabo, mas se eu fosse Deus abria uma excessão pro Eddie.

I honestly feel that Eddie never felt happier in his life than he was at this time. He finally had a lead singer who could sing anything he threw at him, regardless of the key. He had a singer who was also an excellent guitarist so he could explore his interest in keyboards. And no matter what Edward said when Sammy left the band in the mid-90's, he possessed a million times less lead singer's disease than Roth did. The death of their manager Ed Leffler destroyed the group. Managers can destroy bands, and that is what Ray Danniels did once he took over. Which is shocking to me because he had been such a good manager for Rush for decades - a band that had more artistic integrity than anyone.

Sammy was at Farm Aid with his solo band. Edward joined him at the last minute. That's Bill Church (from Montrose) on bass and David Lauser (who still plays with him) on drums. You don't see them, but Gary Pihl (now with Boston) should also be there on guitar with Jesse Harms on keyboards.

Ed isn't anything special, he is fast but thats about it. Nuno Bettencourt, Phil Collen to name only 2 are faster than EVH and much better players

Jas - Is how fast they play the only criteria? Van Halen wrote better songs that you don't have to be a guitar geek to appreciate. Look at the number of memorable Van Halen songs compared to Nuno. Eddie changed the game and gave us songs, that's part of what sets him apart

Funny, my dad told me that he was in a trip in Baja California with his friends around 2005 and he was in a bar having fun with a cover band playing well and they tell him its Sammy Hagar's birthday and he could show up (apparently he showed up in his birthdays) and play. He eventually showed up out of nowhere and started playing Led Zeppelin's Rock and Roll. He made the cover band sound like kids.
