Unfortunately both of those stories are untrue. With that being said Persico was a living legend in Brooklyn by the time he was a Captain. He was a very feared guy with dozens of killers around him. The two stories you mentioned aren't true though.

Persico was a punk. Always had people do his dirty work, never did it himself. I saw an interview with a guy that was locked up with him when he was close to death. He said Persico lost his mind. He'd be in his cell screaming thinking he was on a train.

Persico's brother was also charged in a murder around that time which is why Persico's name was in the newspaper. I'd suggest watching OC Shortz video on it. The Anastasia hit is so very clearly not Persico it made no sense. Again, OC Shortz has a great video on the topic that clarifies the misconceptions. Persico was a legend but those two things are just outright not true and there's evidence to prove it.
