Since the visual approach on runway 09 is one of the most challenging and shortest final approaches, landing there with an airliner is only permitted to trained captains.
Coming from the north-west we had to navigate around the high terrain west and south-west of the field. We then continued along the coastline of the island aiming for our previously set up visual descent point (VDP). The VDP is a manual waypoint located 3nm on radial 179 from SAM VOR, which helps keeping up the situational awareness and also gives an approximate indication of where the aircraft must be fully configured for landing. After passing the VDP, we continued along Ireo (village at the coast), flew over the military base and headed towards Myli, another small village in the valley. Crossing radial 245 of SAM VOR, we turned right aiming for the glasshouse, which is located on the extended centerline of runway 09. From there on the runway was on our 12 o'clock position. As the runway is only roughly 2000m long, we preselected AUTO BRK medium and applied nearly full reverse, since the touchdown was at the end of the touchdown zone.
