Fonias, meaning "killer", is a river where vathres, or small pools, are created in the river by waterfalls. The first waterfall and pool on the Fonias River can be reached after an easy 30 minute hike. The second waterfall is another 30 minute hike away. You can continue hiking up with mountain to find more waterfalls and pools, but the hikes beyond the first two become increasingly difficult. The tallest waterfall on the island, the 35 m Kleidosi is located at Fonias. There is a 1 Euro fee to enter the trail, used for keeping the area clean. There is also a small tavern offering drinks and light lunch at the entrance.
