Same here, though I remember this more from "In Living Color" (that FOX sketch show that was basically "Saturday Night Live" if it were 30 minutes long, had more black cast members than white ones in the 1990s, and actually hired Jim Carrey as a cast member).

Stereo image. Basically, on stage, instruments are located in different places, because... Well, they can't really fit in one place in the middle, can they? So producers of this record isolated left channel for one section (because they didn't want much of the drums/any other instruments in the right channel being heard) and for another section they isolated the right channel to do the same thing. Hope it helps, not really good at explaining things but I tried

The significance is only to this song. Normally both the instrumental and vocals are recorded in stereo so if you view their left and right waveform, they are identical. In the case of ABC, the vocal track was recorded on the left channel whilst the instrumental was recorded on the right channel for the beginning of the track. There is some overlap where instrumental leaks to the left channel and vocals leak to the right but its mostly like this at the beginning. If you look at the green and blue colored samples above in the video, you can see their waveform is significantly different to the respective waveform right below and above them. So in order to sample this in the way it has been done, the vocal had to be sampled from the left channel only whilst the instrumental had to be sampled from the right channel only. If the sample had been lifted from both left and right at once, then it would have been vocal + instrumental together which would have been a totally different sound. The headphone is just indicating that you are listening to a particular channel because for most other samples, its not usually the case as they have both the left and right combined.

I'm gonna go with the assumption that producers in general do sample MJ songs; the problem is is that if, let's say the beat they make goes platinum, it would cost an arm and leg just to clear the sample.
