I think it's important to be aware that this mic is designed for podcasting (spoken voice), not for recording singing or music. I've been using it for years for podcasting and it's robust and does the job - you can indeed just throw it in your bag. However, what I'd caution is that if you travel overseas, take it out of your bag and put it in the tray at security. When this comes through x-ray it looks like a grenade and you're going to be bag checked and delayed. Take it out of your bag, put it in the security tray and they can see it and check it by hand.
It's not bad for speaking, but I was a bit disappointed when I tried to use it for singing. Normally, you can get a richer tone by singing closer to the mic. This mic's best quality sound was about 9 inches to a foot away.
Thank you for the real world feed back. These are the kind of comments that are incredibly valuable to people researching mics. =) Thanks so much James.
I just decided to purchase this today. I think it's gonna be great for online classes. Thank Bandrew sir for the thorough review. As always, very informative, straight to the point and splendid review. Lovelots!!
@@Podcastage OMG.. you responded!! Our teachers' group love your video reviews so much.. we use your video reviews as reference always. And we honestly model our Native English accent trainings to yours.
You are just fantastic. Where would we all be without you? Unsurprisingly, your channel has a quarter-million subs and deserves 10x that. So much effort, knowledge and humour -- you truly and really deserve all the praise you get. (And a very talented musician ...and you can really sing! All-round excellent!)
+ZyDevs Well the only reason I'm here is because amazing people like you supported me when I only had 100 subs. So you are amazing and I send infinite high fives your way! Thank you!
Havnt been into tech until recently.. Saw some of the reviews that people make for all kinds of microphones and honestly I do think that this review is top class even tho its 1yo, I also like that you did all those little test (being away from mic, typing, checking the guitar sound etc..). Good job
@@xLance Lol this really did happen, although I have upgraded my setup to a q2u with a boom arm You should join the podcastage discord, we talk about mics and help people :) Just for the record dont knock your microphone down
Can you explain how to choose a boom arm? My friend has this mic and needs a boom to get it off the desk. I'm assuming you use the same boom arm for all your mic tests. Is there a moderately priced boom arm that you recommend? Maybe you've already done a video on this topic! Please point me to it. Your videos are great. So incredibly helpful.
Hi thanks for your work, your videos are really great I mean you have all you need to have so much suscribers, great video quality, great sound quality and your tests are really interestings. You had a big "problem" which was your thumbnails but they are pretty ok right now^^ Just one suggestion maybe you can do videos on other sound stuffs like speakers, headphones (I saw your video about the gaming headphones but I mean not only gaming headphones but all the headphones), mixer(as you did for the litlle behringer), controller or music stuff ( I saw you've got the same guitar amp as me for exemple). My english is may be really bad so sorry for that I hope it's not a problem. Keep the great work I'm sure your channel will become a really great one :)
+3NL's world THANK YOU! That means a lot to me. I appreciate the kind words and the suggestions. I may slowly start to cover other audio gear (mainly headphones & mixers & interfaces), but for now, I will mainly stick to microphones because I have so many requests to get through. I would love to be able to do this full time and be able to release a LOT more videos, but for right now, I am really busy and am doing pretty much all that I can. =)
+FluhffyNick The placement is pretty important. I put the microphone between my and the keyboard. I'm sure if you put it behind the keyboard (so the keyboard is in front of the mic), you would get a LOT more noise. This mic won't pick up as much as omni directional mic, but it was not as directional of a cardioid mic as I was expecting.
FluhffyNick Thank you for watching and asking the question. It's awesome people like you asking super rad questions that helps me improve the video quality.
I've decided on this mic. it's 2x cheaper than the other one's I'm interested in. it also sounds about as good as the blue yeti and it sounds a tinny bit worse then the audio technica at2020
I bought this microphone for video conferencing. Turning up the gain or amplifying the audio results in a "mosquito buzz" at 1kHz & harmonics every 1kHz. The monitor headphone jack hisses and buzzes in a similar manner. Tried it on a desktop and four different laptop models (battery and AC) with the same results. A different USB cable with ferrite cores didn't help. I can only guess that the internal circuity does not isolate against USB bus noise. Love the voice quality, hate the buzz/whine.
2020 update for others: You can get this mic for $20 now, whereas the meteor is $70. This mic is a really great bang for your buck. I've had it for years and it sounds wonderful. I personally prefer a small profile mic on my desk for gaming vs. a gigantic mic. I just use it for games and video conferencing -- it's great
I Podcastage, I just wanted to know what the best microphone option would be for an iPhone 5c/possibly ipod and ipad? I use it extensively for livestreams and recordings. Thank you! I know you did a video on the iphone 6, but I think it provides more power than the devices I own.
+MarfGaming The only thing I would feel comfortable recommending would be a microphone that's designed to work with an iPhone / iPad / iPod. Here's a cheap lav mic designed for that. I have not tried it yet, but it's only $18. I may give it a go. amzn.to/1GWgwKh
+Podcastage actually, now that I think about it, I Need one compatible with PC and mobile. Lav mics just don't click for me. Could you try the Telex m-40? It's a desktop mic, but it's small and doesn't seem like it would need a lot of power. I've heard good reviews and it's something like 2.49$
MarfGaming The thing is. You will need an audio adapter for it to potentially work. I'll see if I can do that microphone, but it wouldn't be until late march.
The Samson Meteor is a pretty microphone, but unfortunally, the background noise is way too present. You can check that i'm not alone to hear it, do a simple search on youtube for "samson meteor noise", you'll see. Ok, the noise I have is around -40db, but it makes it unusable for any "serious" recording. Use it for skype or what's app.
Hi, great review, one question: would this do the job well enough as a mic for video conferencing just sitting on the desk > I cannot handle a headset anymore :) thanks
This video was extremely helpful. I was wondering if I could get by using one mic to record two voices that would be seated at least a foot apart, but this video showed that wouldn't work unless I have a mic per person. Thanks!
Wtf man? I have this mic and it doesn't really sound like you. First, there's an ambient noise, and second, my voice seems like i'm not close to the mic but I tested it when I was speaking in front of it. I recorded with Audacity at 48kHz, so I don't know what's the problem. PS: Subscribed
I'm not sure what would be causing the discrepancy. I didn't change any settings. I plugged directly into the computer and recorded into quicktime and did NO editing of the audio. It could be the treatment in my room helping with ambient noise.
So one of my relatives bought this mic for me, I use it for singing. It picks up my lower voice fine but there is a problem with it picking up high notes, they sound very "scratchy." I am not sure if this is because I do not know how to use the mic or if there is an actual problem. I use garage band for recording and plug the mic into my Mac Book, if this is just not a good mic for singing could you recommend something with better quality??
I tend to use Push to Talk in calls and games, so would this be a good choice to put somewhere near the left of my monitor, pointed at me (have no room for it near my keyboard)? Just wondering if that shift to the left of my monitor and that little bit of distance will still be okay enough for people to understand me in games and calls on Discord and such. Since I use push to talk they wont be hearing my keyboard noises or background noise much.
I am looking for a microphone for recording meetings. What I need is a test when you record from 15 or 20 meters, sitting with your back to the phone or with your side, and also some other noises, other people talking (or TV). But I cant find such tests. I would suggest to you to make such if you wish.
the mic and your video is freaking awesome but next video I would like to see some information about microphone like what is frequency response, pickup pattern and other terminology

Would you recommend this one or the Samson go for zoom calls or RU-vid videos where one person is talking? This one is just 15€ more expensive than the go
Hey dude, thx for this video, just recently bought this mic thx to your review. I found that it was pretty good for the price, and I wanted to try with a "cheaper" mic before investing into something better (Like and XLR AT2020 or a Yeti). Have you tried the Samson software with this mic ? I'm wondering if the noise reduction option is useful, I'm planning on streaming and speaking with friends on discord, so I'm kinda afraid that it will pick up my keyboard too much (I have a mechanical). I've heard about dynamic microphones, do you have any to recommend for my usage ? Thanks a lot for your amazing work !
Many thanks for all your content. I'm using the Meteor into an iPad for recording fingerstyle acoustic. There is high pitched noise (like a mosquito whine) getting into my recordings, which I notice when I play quietly. I understand this is common on usb audio gear. Would an audio interface handle/suppress this noise better than a USB mic? Many thanks.
This mic vs. the Blue Yeti, as far as price to performance goes? I find the Blue Yeti a bit too expensive, so I'm wondering if it'd be better to go for an alternative, like this Samson Meteor mic for example.
Hey, I would ask you a few questions about the mic and your review. By the way, thanks for this great review and the difference in testing the mic (as you do on your other reviews too). At the moment I have a T-Bone 440 SC (USB) and an Auna 900 S (USB) With the T-Bone, it was my first one, I have very loud humming the last few weeks. Changing the USB-Cable doesn't change anything, so I wanna go and buy a new one. I'm not a fan of XLR-Mics (for me it's too much work and I wanna have some "easy" way, just plug the mic in and record) - I do LPs on RU-vid, so I have other requirements as a musician or podcaster-only. During the recordings I always have loud background noise, just like the loud vents of the graphic cards and the cooler of my gaming-pc, then also the mouse and keyboard. After the recordings I have to denoise the audio track and then you hear the mouse and keyboard, so I just cut it in longtaking work manually from the track. I just want to do it easier and I'm searching for a mic, that don't record (or record very silent) the noise from the keyboard and mouse. After viewing 5 videos on your channel, I'm totally confused which mic would do the best job for me. I watched: Rode Podcaster, Audio Technica AT2020 Plus, Blue Snowball, Blue Yeti and this one, the Samson Meteor. So I kind of prefer the Samson the most, but I'm not sure. As you said in the Audio Technica-Video, you wouldn't recommend it for "gamers", because it records background noise very loud. Hope you can help me, maybe you can recommend me a mic I wouldn't have thought about before? I'm a natural silent speaker, in the windows setting I record at 83-87%, so I do not have to "normalise" in Audiacity and sound loud and clear enough. If you want to hear a test, just write me a PM, so I can sent you a link, I don't want to post a link unasked. I would love to hear from you and I'm excited if you can recommend me a mic. Thank you very much, Arianna :)

Sir i have a question plz do answer .. “When we connect headphone to this mic while recording with a karoake, can we hear the music also playing in the pc or the vocals only ?”
+Podcastage I don't know if you have a lot of experience with cameras but, i wanted to ask you do you know any cameras 200-300$ range that shoot high quality (not gopro) something more of a dslr? Please Respond ASAP
+VadeUs I have used Samsung NX1000 which in US can be bought on amazon for about $200 (amzn.to/1HPRHuh). Problem with this is you have a very limited lens eco system and then lenses are relatively expensive. It's going to be very difficult to find any DSLR style camera in that price range. Here's a video by one of my favorite channels on getting a DSLR for super cheap: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T4ZvAFCt5Sk.html
VadeUs Let me know if you have any other questions. I have done SO much research on this stuff because I've been upgrading. Unfortunately, reviewing cameras is SUPER expensive and I can't afford to get into that game now. After all that link I sent you to Digital Rev TV is great. Those guys nail it when it comes to camera reviews.
Hey Podcastage! I'm searching a good mic for about 50€ or less for voip and I found your reviews and versus series really helpful (I just subscribed to your channel to give you my little support ;) ). I ended up choosing this Samson Meteor (I will pay it about 40€ and it seems pretty fair for its value). What concerns me the most is the DEHP story of Samson's products. Is it something to worry about in your opinion? In case of affermative answer, what could be a valid alternative to this mic with a similar quality and features (USB, cardioid, ecc...)? Thank you very much and keep up with the good work!
First of all thanks for your interest. This is what you can read in Samson's website (as well in all their products manuals): "WARNING: This product contains DEHP, a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects and other reproductive harm.". It sounds a bit scary even if a lot of people seems not worried at all about this. The issue seems pretty seriuos since it seems Europe want to cease the sale and use of this chemical in the next years (or at least this is what I read). Here you can read something about this. Studies states this chemical can be also released in the air. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bis(2-ethylhexyl)_phthalate#Toxicity articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/06/24/europe-bans-penis-shrinking-chemical-america-does-not.aspx I don't understand if in a normal use this can be someway dangerous or it's just overthinking...
So Bandrew what are your thoughts about this topic? I was waiting for your opinion to make a move :P . Just to be more specific I need a mic for voip (and maybe some recording in the future), that can be used at about 1 foot of distance and that does not picks up a lot of environment noise (I usually play vg while using Skype or TS). Budget is around 50/70$. Hope you can help me out. Thanks a lot and have a nice day!
Is there a mic that i can put on my desk about 1.5ft away from me and chat with my friends through skype while playing games, and that it picks up my voice just fine?. I was thinking about buying this one, or is there some other mic you would recommend?. Cheers
Would you recommend as a beginner podcast mic for the price? Also I saw you had it on a mic arm as well. Is it compatible with the arms or did you rig it yourself? Thank you sir.
I would direct you more towards a dynamic mic for your podcast. I did a Best Dynamic USB Mic video a few weeks ago. And that'd be more suitable for podcasting. And the boom arm is the Neewer Boom Arm. Just needed a standard 5/8 to 3/8" mic stand adapter and it worked.
This sounds like a great deal for me. 70€ hits the sweet spot for me IMO. I want a good mic for livestreams, and mt crappy 30€ Trust mic aint gonna cut it with the muddy and unappealing sound. Should i buy a pop filter for it tho?
It's another cheap mic that's been getting some praise from its users. There are some mics listed on Amazon. Here is one of the links www.amazon.com/LyxPro-Condenser-Microphone-Shockmount-Professional/dp/B00WRHTOFG/ref=sr_1_sc_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1448690830&sr=8-5-spell&keywords=Lyx+Pro+microphones
hey buddy, do you think the mic is good when you sit 1m away from the mic, sound system is 3m away so that you have no howl? and even when this is not the best mic for this situation do you know another one in this price area. :) greetings from germany! nice video!
+Gârtu - Nebunu cu controlleru' I'm not sure what you mean. You should be able to use a Shock Mount & a Pop Filter on the same microphone. I do not think that this microphone can have a shock mount, but you can definitely hook it up with a pop filter like the Dragon Pad.
This, or the C01U PRO? I'm only planning to do a few RU-vid projects, along with a few acoustic guitar songs; I like the look of the Meteor so much, but I think the C01U Pro slightly edges it - can't make up my mind?!?!
+Rovic Castillo (Conscience GamingHD) You don't need to request a review on multiple videos. And absolutely I will review it. I have added it to my list. It won't be for a while though.
Hey, my boom arm is completed. I have the sf-920 with a usb audio adapter and thinking to upgrade it to Samson Meteor. What do you think? Good idea? I watched on another channel that the Blue Yeti and the Samson Meteor sound similiar.
