Honestly I think it's because you live with your voice every day so you got preferences of what you want to sound but the majority of people like a more full voice and sometimes a cleaner mic doesn't give that effect but one tuned with more low end or with a darker sound is more pleasing to the ear probably also why alot of people like the sm7b because it's a dark microphone
@@krzysztofmaska2215 Pretty sure most mics sounds better than the MV7. Shure mics just give you more work when EQ'ing. No one in particular likes the minecraft villager effect that shure mics give ya lol
I preferred the mv7 and liked the Qx9 the least it wasn't clear to me. The other four sounded similar. So i'm with you. I liked the mv7 the best (the last one) it was more clear to me and didn't get harsh, and had a nice clear yet mellow sound. I have no skin in the game just my opinion.
I actually found the sound of the Q9X quite pleasant on your voice! In these recordings, it had solid isolation. Everything else sounded like you were in an untreated room with lots of bright reverberation (which is true). I think the RE20 is the best _overall_ sound. Good isolation, not harsh, warm without being muddy. The SM57 is a surprisingly bright dynamic, bordering on harsh. Its extension into the low-end is what “saves” it for vocal application. It also has decent isolation. The SM7B is not my favorite on _your_ voice, but I think it sounds fine! Classic Shure “compressed midrange” tone. The Q9X actually performed quite well here. Compared to the other 4 microphones, it offers a different sound. Good isolation and very warm in tone, though bordering on muddy. And the MV7 is a smidge too thin on this recording. Especially right after the Q9X, it has a noticeable cut in the low frequencies that is reminiscent of an “old radio filter.” Your technical complaints of the Q9X are very valid. However, I disagree with your opinion on its overall sound. I actually preferred the mid-boost off, it sounded congested and nasally when you turned it on (not a lot, but on a recording I would EQ it back down). I found the Q9X quite pleasant in this particular demonstration. It was *far* “warmer” than the other mics and had the best isolation against the bright reverberations in the room. The last thing I want from a “broadcast” style microphone is harsh top-end; nothing is more fatiguing after 30+ minutes of spoken word content than an overly bright microphone.
Please tell me which microphone to go for Shure Mv7x or Samson Q9x; I love the sound of Samson Q9x it has that clarity which I am looking for. This is my 3rd video about Samson Q9x and every time it impresses me a lot. Even though I saw podcastage review of Shure Mv7x and he recommendeds it but I do not like it as much as the Samson q9x sound please help me choose; help.
I love watching your videos! While I cooked in the studio with the original Q9u for a couple of months I definitely realized it wasnt the best mic and sent it back. But upon listening to some older recordings it sounded kind of nice on my voice at times. I wouldnt mind using the Q9X at all. Wish I already owned the RE-20 though that shit sounds amazing!
I love your mic reviews, the content and audio is top notch. But I really hate the constant zoom in/zoom out effect you do every few seconds, it gives me a headache after a while so I just minimise the browser and listen to your reviews. Not sure if that's something you could fix or tone down if others agree?
I actually liked the Q9x best in the blind test. I feel like it's going all out for a bass / proximity sound which will appeal to users whose priority is not clarity. Kind of like a cheap 50mm f1.8 lens is an easy way to get blurry backgrounds in photos for a bit of razzle dazzle without actually achieving critical focus. If you're just posting your images to Facebook and not pixel peeping it feels great but someone with a trained eye (or in this case critical ear) will spot the flaws.
I am embarrassed to say, I ranked the Q9x in the top spot and the SM7B at the bottom. I guess I won't be doing any mic reviews anytime soon. Or maybe it is like when a person likes cheap wine. I should just be happy I don't have expensive tastes.
Tbf though, if going all out for proximity you can always just talk directly into a treated room corner with the microphone fairly close but angled for a blend of direct sound path and those dense early reflections. It will however probably sound incredibly crunchy, over-hyped and cheesy ;) (Quite fun occasionally lol).
I agree with others that it sounded the best with your voice and it would probably suit mine voice too. I chose it in the blind test. Also I actually enjoy how it looks, I like that they're mixing two classic looks. If sound really gets worse, a pop filter might be used. I actually enjoy that you speak about the companies more broadly, talking about their website, image and ideas. We already know we have this obsession with a very niche thing that doesn't even requires that attention from buyers, often even if they're professionals (singers, VO artists). So why not go full crazy and discuss everything? Especially when you already have a few observations. And I agree Samson does require to change something. Their, I think, most popular mic looks very unimpressively in this day and age. This mic looks good (to me), on the other hand, but the things you outline might be improved. And the photos too, of course. By the way, Shure has some very good photos on their website but even they can improve. It's hard for me to understand why they can't pay more attention to this. So many people start their careers online and they look for things that look nice and presented nicely. Hopefully, I will have the chance of winning this time. Cause life's been hard and I'd use it for VO work. If I will be able to deal with the noise, of course. Right now I'm working with 30+ years old Shure SM57 clone and have to deal with a lot of noise too. But I do need the mid range cause my voice can appear nasally (when I sing I even sound a bit like John Lennon in the higher range). P.S. Also I'm amazed that Sm7b does sound so much worse for you. It's amazing how much it matters to find your mic. If I had only to imagine I'd say it's your mic
Love all the new vids sorry I haven’t been active in the discord lately vo business picked up recently. Should hangout sometime soon! Happy new year bro.
Based on this video, I would take the Samson. It sounded much better on YOUR voice than either of the Shures. I didn't notice the noise until you pointed it out. As a producer/ engineer with well oner 40 years of experience, the Samson , IMHO was the winner by a mile.
Before reading comments I listened to the blind audio samples 3x each. I was sorta hoping I’d pick MV7 for the confirmation biased outcome I was leaning towards wanting based on logical arguments I’ve read. Nope, the Q9x was my top choice all three times, and my wife picked it independently too. Thanks for the blind test - excellent addition to your review.
Honestly, I don't hate the sound - I think it's quite okay, but even at the price they're asking I feel like it might be a bit too much, unless you're planning on using it as a weapon. also this new, evil you? pretty based. the 2023 arch is starting off strong 👍👍
Looking at other reviews and now yours... I think this mic sounds really good - it is warm/dark, but I don't feel it's that much mud. When you added the windscreen it did went on the verge, but overall the sound is good. But yeah - shock rejection etc... it is one of these mics you should set and forget, not touch again.
@@AudioHaze You should try the Mackie EM-89D then, it sounds very good on many voices (including mine, I prefer it over XM8500), and it got price slashed to 25 USD right now. I have seen it sound weird on few people, so I am curious if you would be one of them.
One thing imma quickly say is that I was surprised that Samson's mics were disappointing because in the audiophile zone the Samson sr850s are like the golden child of budget open backs and the meteor mic is the best of the ok in USB mics at it's price
When you did the blind comparison at the end, the Q9X stuck out like a sore thumb. I tried with only laptop speakers too, and it was STILL obvious. It's just so muddy and undefined compared to the others in my opinion.
I feel like there are a lot of companies that fail to keep up with the times... Ya hate to see it... Especially when Samson asked you to give them another chance😂
Hi, awesome video! I’d really appreciate if you could help me settle a gear dilemma! I’m a r&b & rap artist with a voice in the mid to high range and I’ve been rocking with an AKG C214 for a couple years now. I love it’s clarity and open quality, however my only complaint is sibilant sensitivity and sometimes an overly harsh high end, which makes high volume vocals a challenge. I want to add another mic to my studio, and logically considered getting something with the opposite qualities of the c214 so I have more variety of vocal to choose from - SM7B. Warm, dark, smooth, great tolerance for volume and great noise rejection. Do you have any better direction to steer me in? I was also eyeing some of the warm audio tube mics, the wa47jr, the at4040, etc.
I liked the RE20 first, but the Samson was right after it??? I don't know, it seemed more even in your voice. I've been thinking about how well a mid-rangey mic would sound with my lower-end voice since my only mic right now is pretty flat overall, so let's see what we got
I have a Samson boom arm and the quality is awesome, it can hold any microphone with its 4.5lbs rating, but honestly they should stick with just making set up components vs the microphones themselves 😅
Got myself a Q9U last year and it’s really not bad aside from the egregious lack of shock absorption. I did get it from Amazon uk though where it was around half the price of an MV7 and around the same price as a Wave or a Yeti so it was definitely worth it at that price point. I do hope to upgrade soon though but they annoyingly don’t have a frequency response graph anywhere I can use as a reference and they just gave me the silent treatment when I asked for one. Did they ever send you one for this review?
I heard Meze's are good headphones but aren't they bassy? Wouldn't that make it a bad reference headphone? Or would they be good to make sure your tracks aren't bloated?
Not the worst sounding thing from Samson haha would need to get a shock mounting system going for sure though, defiantly not looking like anything worth that price though
It’s a shame the microphone isn’t that great because it was a missed opportunity. I actually love the look, but it does sound a little muddy. Btw, would you rather put your money into a Rodecaster Pro II or a better microphone?
Cool video, not great microphone. Don't want to turn this into a anti-Samson screed lol, but I think when you say they have to make a better design, I think that might be underestimating the scope of their problems. So many of these older brands now only exist as a name. If I had to guess, I don't think Samson makes a single item, it's all a branding exercise now imo. They just put a brand on whatever they spec out from a supplier in Shenzhen. Taking a quick look on gmaps, it seems they moved from their old HQ you showed in the badly photoshop photo a few years ago and is now in a strip mall type thing next to an local insurance agent. The employee reviews on Indeed are sort of amusing too. This is already too long for a YT comment, but a video on the microphone/pro audio manufacturing industry might be neat content. Keep making awesome videos!
The Samson Q2U is a fantastic mic for the price, and is the mic I have recommended to lots of people shopping for a first good USB dynamic mic. I'm disappointed the Q9X isn't better, but it it's not an unpleasant sound.
I actually like how this microphone sounds. If you just add some eq and a noise gate I'm sure this microphone will be just fine for most people. One thing I dislike about it is the self noise. Why do samson products have so much self noise, I just don't understand.
Phew! The MV7 does not sound pleasing here, but I actually think the Q9X sounds perfectly usable if not solid. You’re not the first to criticize it - it is far from perfect - but I think it sounds good on you!
Hmmm, I don’t think I own a mediocre mic Ricky! But I never win stuff anyway so I might just buy it for shots and groins. 😂💜😂 (Mic 1 RE20 was my favorite, it’s also the one I use.)
I think the Samson Q9X is a good option for the price. I would use it a second microphone at home as it seems to work well in an untreated environment,
I got the q9u on sale for my ps5 it's okay but I wouldn't have paid retail for it nor would I pay retail for this samson mic the only samson mic I have been happy with the retail was the g track pro only because of the versatility of it
i had a pair of samson mediaone bluetooth 3 inch studio monitors, i couldn't even turn them up to 70% of the volume without an insane amount of distortion. it was torture mixing with those. I got presonus ones at the same size and price ($99) and they sound way better. this mic doesn't sound bad though
I have Blue Yeti, Samson Q2U, and Shure MV7. After a lot of research, I bought Shure SM7B at a good price (about 345USD). Satisfied with it. Thank you for your review. Shure MV7 is slightly brighter than SM7B. Samson Q2U is too bright.
