Was that a bubble gum stain on the trousers? If yes you can put a handkerchief or thin tea towel over it and iron it. The gum will lift off. Another thing that works is bug spray but that will require rubbing the fabric which probably isn’t a good idea
Fabric softener is the plague. Softener destroys the physical properties of the fabric. The fabric can then no longer absorb moisture thus rendering it unusable.
It's a pity that you combined heavy stain with the Hygiene steam. The question now is whether the result is from the Hygiene steam of from the Heavy stain.

7 years on. And my machine is still going. And I use liquid pods... don't talk shite lol. It'll only be bad if the machine is neglected. A tablet of calgon works to keep it clean anyway. Lol
