Hot Plate gocellphonerepa...
This is how we replace just the glass on an S4. While it costs less to replace just the glass and preserve the original AMOLED there is quite a bit more labor involved. The chances of removing the old glass without causing damage to the display are also increased through the use of special equipment. A heating plate is highly recommended as it will bring the surface up to a temperature where removing the glass from the digitizer is possible. The glass should be heated to a specific temperature which varies depending on what phone you happen to be working with. In this example we heated the glass to about 140 C. Lately I've been able to remove the glass at 120 so you can always start at a lower temp but do be careful as if you go too low the glue won't separate. The trick is to keep the temperature as constant as possible as too much heat can burn the AMOLED and too little will cause damage to it as we pry away the old pieces.
While it is not impossible to perform this repair without a heating plate the risk of damage to the AMOLED increases dramatically when attempting to use a heat gun or other device since maintaining a constant temperature is for all practical purposes impossible.
Once the original glass has been removed we must be sure that the surface of the digitizer is completely cleaned and free of glass fragments as they will absolutely scratch the digitizer when the new glass is installed. Any other impurities such as dust or glue will create bubbles between the lens and digitizer and, while not necessarily affecting functionality, will certainly be an eyesore.
Once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned we will apply a LOCA glue to attach the new lens. This glue will only dry with the use of an ultra violet light. Another challenging part of this repair is working all of the bubbles out from beneath the glass. This requires a small amount of pressure and due to the sensitive nature of the AMOLED it is easy to break the display while performing this step. Leakage of LOCA glue into the earpiece and home button are another issue. Too little glue and the surfaces won't bond. Too much and you risk leaking into other parts of the phone. This is a process that is best learned in an environment where someone familiar wit the process can monitor and provide feedback to the technician.
Once the lens has been replaced it can be particularly difficult to replace a second time. One of the things that most technicians dread is coming across an S4 that is broken only to find out that it has already been repaired once before. This makes removing the old glass much more difficult and time consuming. Also, damaging the AMOLED becomes an ever bigger liability.
All things considered it is best for most do-it-your-selfers to purchase the pre-assembled replacement screen if they plan on doing a one time fix. For those interested in pursuing Galaxy lens repair as a regular activity we highly recommend investing in a heating plate and UV curing light as this is the only way that a repair like this can be performed consistently without a major time investment.
Note that different Galaxy series phones use different versions of LOCA glue when manufactured so while it is possible to put them back together in a similar manner, getting them apart can vary from one model to the next. Another interesting thing about the S4 is that it seems to be more prone to AMOLED damage than the previous models. While we are used to seeing a lot of S3s with broken glass, they don't seem as common as broken glass on the S4. Quite often the glass is still intact while the display has been damaged. This is often but not always apparent as the cracks in the AMOLED can be difficult to see.
