This is how we replace just the glass on an S4. While it costs less to replace just the glass and preserve the original AMOLED there is quite a bit more labor involved. The chances of removing the old glass without causing damage to the display are also increased through the use of special equipment. A heating plate is highly recommended as it will bring the surface up to a temperature where removing the glass from the digitizer is possible. The glass should be heated to a specific temperature which varies depending on what phone you happen to be working with. In this example we heated the glass to about 140 C. Lately I've been able to remove the glass at 120 so you can always start at a lower temp but do be careful as if you go too low the glue won't separate. The trick is to keep the temperature as constant as possible as too much heat can burn the AMOLED and too little will cause damage to it as we pry away the old pieces.
While it is not impossible to perform this repair without a heating plate the risk of damage to the AMOLED increases dramatically when attempting to use a heat gun or other device since maintaining a constant temperature is for all practical purposes impossible.
Once the original glass has been removed we must be sure that the surface of the digitizer is completely cleaned and free of glass fragments as they will absolutely scratch the digitizer when the new glass is installed. Any other impurities such as dust or glue will create bubbles between the lens and digitizer and, while not necessarily affecting functionality, will certainly be an eyesore.
Once the surface has been thoroughly cleaned we will apply a LOCA glue to attach the new lens. This glue will only dry with the use of an ultra violet light. Another challenging part of this repair is working all of the bubbles out from beneath the glass. This requires a small amount of pressure and due to the sensitive nature of the AMOLED it is easy to break the display while performing this step. Leakage of LOCA glue into the earpiece and home button are another issue. Too little glue and the surfaces won't bond. Too much and you risk leaking into other parts of the phone. This is a process that is best learned in an environment where someone familiar wit the process can monitor and provide feedback to the technician.
Once the lens has been replaced it can be particularly difficult to replace a second time. One of the things that most technicians dread is coming across an S4 that is broken only to find out that it has already been repaired once before. This makes removing the old glass much more difficult and time consuming. Also, damaging the AMOLED becomes an ever bigger liability.
All things considered it is best for most do-it-your-selfers to purchase the pre-assembled replacement screen if they plan on doing a one time fix. For those interested in pursuing Galaxy lens repair as a regular activity we highly recommend investing in a heating plate and UV curing light as this is the only way that a repair like this can be performed consistently without a major time investment.
Note that different Galaxy series phones use different versions of LOCA glue when manufactured so while it is possible to put them back together in a similar manner, getting them apart can vary from one model to the next. Another interesting thing about the S4 is that it seems to be more prone to AMOLED damage than the previous models. While we are used to seeing a lot of S3s with broken glass, they don't seem as common as broken glass on the S4. Quite often the glass is still intact while the display has been damaged. This is often but not always apparent as the cracks in the AMOLED can be difficult to see.

@Rocio Parra Depends on the lamp. With the one used in this video 10 minutes on each side is plenty. Once any glue overflow turns solid you should be fine. More time can't hurt if you want to play it safe.

I'm just amazed on how he just put the screen down so fast! I seen ppl go super slow on that, maybe because they were using LOCA glue. Which one is better? UV glue or LOCA sir? I always fix my galaxies with LOCA. A nice tip would be helpful, you just earned yourself a subscriber :D
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 10 лет назад
LOCA/UV glue pretty much the same thing. UV just refers to the curing process. There are a few different techniques that can be used to install the glass. In the video our tech installs the lens quickly but does spend some time working the bubbles out. I've seen people who take more time allowing the glass to settle without many bubbles forming. The preferred method is of course whatever works best for you in terms of time investment and the end result. Thanks for subbing!

As someone who has worked in the cell phone repair industry for nearly ten years, I have occasionally referenced these types of videos with my coworkers when poking fun at alternate "shortcut methods" of screen repair. However today is the first time I have actually had to deal with the results of a glass-only replacement with LOCA and WITHOUT first removing the OLED-digitizer from its frame. It was an absolute NIGHTMARE. A properly built Galaxy S 4 OLED-Digitizer is laminated to its cover glass using LOCA and the UV curing method OUTSIDE of the phone. This assembly is then installed onto the magnesium and ABS plastic midframe using a solid acylic glue. When you remove the acylic frame adhesive during disassembly and simply pour LOCA onto the OLED, you will flood the internals of the phone with LOCA. This material does not ever cure until directly exposed to ultraviolet - it will coat the inside of the phone in a oily substance that is virtually impossible to dissolve using every day solvents. I have spent over two hours today just trying remove the LOCA from my customer's midframe so a new OLED assembly can be installed. The coating of LOCA has permeated the frame and made it impossible for the new acylic to bond with the ABS plastic of the frame. If I had a spare midframe in stock I would have much preferred to throw away his front housing and replace it for free rather than deal with the results of the previous technician's lazy work. By the time i finish cleaning the LOCA off my hands, tools and workstation, what should have been a 1 hour repair will have eaten the last 5 hours of my life. To be clear: following the above steps will not ruin your phone. LOCA is non-conductive, non-corrosive and will not cause damage to the electronics inside your phone no matter how much the motherboard is made to bathe in it. This method will however make your phone damn near impossible to fix properly the next time your screen breaks.
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 8 лет назад
If you are finding LOCA inside of the mid-frame then it was not applied properly. When this happens it is a pain to clean no doubt. Thats why we seal the edges with a UV flashlight as the bubbles are worked out. Its really not that difficult if you have patience and becomes easy with practice. You must use the right amount of LOCA though- about 1-1.5 ml with an S4 for example. Of course we cant tell other repair shops how to do their job so sometimes we do end up dealing with the situation that you described. The most thorough method to remedy excess LOCA is leaving the assembly under a UV lamp overnight. It will dry even the areas that you cant see if given sufficient time. As far as removing the glass I find it much easier/safer once it has been replaced previously especially if you used Octopus brand. OCA sheets on the other hand slow things down a bit as they are much stickier.

Thanks for the video, it just seems like the method used to put the glue on would create or promote a lot of bubbles that would need to be worked out. Especially how quickly the screen was dropped on to the digitizer. Wouldn't using an "X" or "stick man" pattern create less bubbles and make the job easier?
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 9 лет назад
Yeah since this video I've been laying down the glass much slower. Think of it like dipping your hand in water without creating ripples. When you can move that slowly you will have very few bubbles to deal with.

Other videos I've seen go to the trouble of removing the camera and sensor before applying the glue. How does your method prevent glue entering these areas? Is it that you use just the right amount of glue, or that you cure the glue with UV light at the edges before it can reach them? I'm doing my badly crazed S4 right now. I have got the glass off successfully and everything still works. Am researching best method for applying the new glass. For UV I've got a bank note checker rated at 4 watts of UV. Will that be enough? Good video. Thank you for the help.
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 10 лет назад
I believe that it is a combination of both. If it is your first time though it will be tough to know how much is too much so it certainly would not hurt to remove the internal components just to be safe. The nice thing is that the glue wont actually dry anywhere that the UV doesn't reach so you can always clean it out from the inside later on. We discovered recently that the mic on the logic board near the earpiece mesh is also a concern as glue will block it and prevent the speakerphone from picking up sound so it is best to pull the board unless your glue allocation is close to perfect. The lamp that we use is 36 watts. For tacking the edges your note checker might work but I think that you'll need a bit more for curing the entire surface. The sun works well enough for that from what I've been told, if you don't want to invest in a lamp. Or you could always visit a nail shop and ask them to let you pop your phone in theirs for a bit.

ok I use the playing card technique myself and have never broke the amoled screen but the way the guy applied the loca glue is unbelievable the amount of bubbles in that must of been unreal I always strip the logic board camera and proximty sensor out as it only takes 5 minutes and seal around the screen with 2mm double sided adhesive to stop any loca going behind screen and to aslo to hold the outer edge of the glass and if you cure your loca for the right time then I have and will continue to remove broken glass of loca glued screens aswell
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 9 лет назад
+kingo1988 No bubbles on this one but he has been doing them for a very long time. This was actually the guy that taught me glass only repair. Personally I take out the board too but I guess when you get the glue application down 100% you don't have to worry about LOCA seeping through. But again I agree take it out especially if you are still learning. Sealing the edges will almost guarantee you don't have anything coming through at the top and bottom ends which is where the trouble can occur. I posted an updated video earlier this year that you might find helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-adsjgRDVqUw.html

I was wondering I have used both methods the wire and the playing card method. At first I thought the wire was the best but the more I do it I keep messing up something. The other day I was removing glass on note 2 with wire and cut the polorizer in half. Anyway I managed to get glass off without breaking lcd and watched a video on how to remove polorizer with adhesive remover and razor. I successfully completed that also now I ordered new polorizer and a roller. And now I'm scared to finish it.lol anyway is it easy to do the polorizer film and what method do you prefer. When removing the glass. .
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 9 лет назад
Are you talking about OCA sheets? We gave up on those a long time ago. One you cure them there is no turning back. And if you crack your screen again you are finished because their bond is permanent. If you are referring to the digitizer no I haven't tried replacing one yet. Usually when it is damaged we just replace the whole display. In most situations I use a playing card because of the housing being in the way of the wire. When I do use the wire I start at the end opposite of the flex cable because as you mentioned it is very easy to damage.

Molybdenum wire is safer but not easy to use anything like what you describe unless the display assembly is removed from the mid frame first. That's the catch with Galaxy series. Getting under the glass with wire or any type of string is difficult because of the bezels protruding beyond the glass.

Any thoughts on using a hair-dryer (180F)? Most of the videos I've seen use that (ECO-FUSED , JerryRigEverything, etc)? Also instead of the glue/uv, will the double-sided tape not work long term?
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 5 лет назад
If you have a hair dryer that gets to 180F then I’d think yes, probably. As far as tape goes though you’ll run into touch issues and dust under the glass.

+Ahmad Zeeshan They did not fully cure the glue. You can take it back to them or leave your phone out in the sun for a few hours. This will usually allow UV to penetrate beneath the lens.

@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 8 лет назад
Sealing the edges with the flashlight and using just the right amount of glue helps a lot. If you get glue inside it can be removed with cloth wipes or you can leave the affected part under the lamp until it dries. 99% isopropyl alcohol removes wet loca too but you have to be careful where you use it. It will literally remove the paint from the back of the glass screen. For example if you dip a swab in it and try to clean the hole where the camera sees through it will immediately strip the color off of the lens.

Please watch this one first if you haven't done the repair already ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-adsjgRDVqUw.html Also before you put the board back in set the display assembly/mid frame face down on a flat surface. Push down gently against the upper third of the frame where the board will sit. You should be able to see if any glue squeezes out. If so do your best to remove it as this can seep into the components.

Wrong Wrong The part is not that expensive. Labor and risk of damaging the AMOLED is what the price is based on. $100 is the going rate for professional installation. I can't speak for Amazon specifically since they fulfill orders from all sorts of different sellers but the glass that we use is high quality. No crooked logos or thin materials etc.

I've never damaged any phone I have done but now you have me thinking I've been lucky, is it that thin film like material over the LCD?
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 10 лет назад
The AMOLED- active-matrix organic light-emitting diode, is what most people refer to as an LCD- liquid crystal display. Just a technicality. I'm impressed that you were able to do an iPhone using a heat gun. Those LCDs seem to be very easy to crack. We used to do glass removal with a heat gun too but I gotta say that since heating plates have come down in price so much you should think about investing in one. It makes sliding a molybdenum wire under the glass much easier. I can remove the glass from something with a detachable display assembly like an iPhone in about a minute once it is removed from the phone. Of course this doesn't apply to Galaxy phones unfortunately unless you can pull the whole AMOLED out of the mid-frame without breaking it.

Go Cell Phone Repair do you remove the frame to use the coated cutting wire? i noticed you did not remove the lcd from the frame and I am curious to why?
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 9 лет назад
David James We generally go according to what the bezel looks like. If the customer is okay with their existing frame it lessens the chance of damaging the AMOLED by removing the glass from the outside. Day before yesterday one of our techs pulled off the glass in two pieces (single crack down the middle) within five minutes. He had the repair completed start to finish in twenty five minutes. That is our fastest to date.

Go Cell Phone Repair so you just apply LOCA with the frame installed? Won't it leak to the other components (home button flex, camera etc) I'm curious to know how you avoid this. I remove it from the frame and put brand new frame adhesive and back LCD adhesive but it's a lot of work
@GoCellPhoneRepair
@GoCellPhoneRepair 9 лет назад
David James Yes leakage can definitely be an issue. The front camera and proximity sensor can be cleaned up afterward easily enough using LOCA remover and a q-tip but if it gets into the buttons there's not a whole lot that you can do. Also when you screw down the board it forces even more glue out and as you know the stuff under the painted areas at the top and bottom end of the display never cures since the UV can't reach it. The short answer is that with practice you get good at using just the right amount of glue- about 1 to 1.5 ml for an S4- and working bubbles toward the sides rather than the top and bottom ends. "Spot" curing the trouble areas with a UV flashlight helps but to this day we find that the glue may continue to come out of the display for a week or two after the repair. I know a guy who is using a vacuum machine to make AMOLED removal easier but they cost about $600 and aren't necessarily 100% effective as far as safe removal.

It may be a bit more than that but not much. I know about how much we use but I can't really advise you about this product as I don't have any experience with it. The important thing is that you fully cover the surface. Any excess will flow out over the edges but this can be a problem. It is possible to use too much and expose the keys at the bottom, the speaker, camera and notification compartments as well as the secondary mic to the glue. If this happens you can usually clean it out later but sometimes it does damage so you'll end up with one of the above not working anymore. It's best to practice this repair a few times before you start working with live phones. We spend a couple days teaching our techs until they get a good feel for it.

Go Cell Phone Repair glass only. I just reconnected all the cable and this time i'm getting a boot sound and it fully boots but i still cant see what is on the screen. i also know that the touch screen works because i can enter my password. I sometime get the same effect when i don't plug the VGA cable in properly to my PC so maybe this is the cables fault.

with this method of not removing the logic board, front camera and sensory, after a few days you will get all the excessive loca glue in ur board and camera and your phone will be damage... do not do this method.!!! ask me how I know.

HELLO! I GOT MY FRONT GLASS REPLACED. BUT FROM ONE SIDE GLUE OR GUM KEEPS ON COMING OUT FROM BENEATH THE GLASS. I CLEAN IT WITH TISSUE BUT AGAIN AFTER PICKING IT OUT OF MY POCKET I GET IT LEAKED. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND? DID THE REPAIRER NOT HEAT IT PROPERLY?
