Thanks for checking out my Z Flip 5 review, and if you're tempted by a bendy blower, check out my round-up of the best foldables for summer 2023, live now :)
I've been using this phone for about 3-4 days now and I have to say I love it. It's the best phone ever. I got to a stage where I got bored of phones and this has revived my tech enthusiasm. All the talk about the cover screen by everyone which seems to be a major topic, but the truth is I hardly ever use that flex window. I'm constantly flipping out the big screen, heck that's why I bought this damn thing. My only gripe coming from one plus phones is the one ui, not a fan. Also the finger print scanner occasionally misbehaves despite me having clean dry hands. Still I love this phone, best decision I made. Thanks Chris for your dedicated coverage on this phone for the past few days 👍
I used to be sooo into new phones/tech but had the same feeling of it feeling stagnant. A few years ago I admittedly thought flip phones were gimmicky, but for some reason the Flip 5 has reignited the spark I had for cool tech and I hope that when I buy it it lives up to my expectations
It's definitely refreshing to try something new like a foldable after so many very similar phones, glad you're enjoying! But yeah, One UI can be a bit irritating at times, especially if you don't want to convert to all of Samsung's services
@@TechSpurtI haven't owned a Samsung phone since the S4 and the ui has gotten more ridiculous than ever before lol. I still can't figure out the need of replicating every single services that Google provides. I was forced to download and use Samsung Pass in order to use the galaxy store, wtf 😬
Excellent review Chris.. My Flip 4 has been excellent over the last year so can't wait to get my Flip 5. Happy with battery life as I'm not a Utube blogger so not an issue...
Thanks for the tip on why it seemed to be dropping wifi. I have set to keep unlocked when on home wifi, but kept having to unlock, so I suspect you solved the problem. First couple of checks confirm. Owned it for one week now and I'm loving it. The smaller size for carrying, the magical "flex" screen, the speed and Samsung "deals" combine to leave me not looking back longingly at my Note 20 Ultra and it's large screen. I have one when I want one. Great video.
Swype just got 20x better by not typing on the keyboard, but swiping instead on the smaller compact screen mode. It's an amazing combo. Also Link-to-Windows is as good as Dex (not everyone uses Mac)
I switched from iphone to s22 ultra I did own a s10 plus but sold it in 2019 went back to iphone but I love all the customisations samsung can do but I'm over big heavy phones so I am upgrading to the z flip 5 plus I do get bored easy with phones after months too I guess loving the flex window.
Battery life and price are definitely the two things keeping this phone from selling many more. It sucks because I really think I'd like the form factor. ❤
I've discovered my Z Flip4 has better overall reception and WiFi than my iPhone 13. Not sure exactly why, I would have expected them to be fairly even on this level, but unfortunately, at least for my particular device, they aren't equal.
I just booked my flip 5. With trade deals and credit card offers and other offers and a few gift cards lying around, I am getting the phone plus a case for it all for 3 dollars!!
Being an old repairman for phones I can say that any mechanical stress introduced by moving parts is a bad idea. That flip hinge, cables, display etc. are weak points. And a phone usually ends up on tarmac or concrete sooner or later. Unless properly protected, it will break.
Understood, but wouldn't you say if the phone is folded when falling it be less prone to breaking? the metall framing will take the bulk of the hit, thats if obviously it wont fall on the flat screen side. Something telling me the impact will not affect the screen inside, especxially that it feels like a plastic rather a harder sensitive glass screen...or am I wrong?
That's a good point. That's actually why I waited until the 3rd generation to finally bite the bullet, as I figured they'd have the hinge mechanisms refined for durability by then. I've owned the ZFold 3 as my daily driver for almost two years, and I've run a used ZFlip 3 as my work phone for most of 2023. Both have survived several major drops (the Flip 3 fell while open twice while riding my road bike, the Fold 3 was accidentally thrown off a roof with a pile of 2x4 cutoffs...). I was impressed by their durability, and only had to deal with a couple of shattered cases in those instances. Proper protection is a must, as you said, and I can say at least anecdotally that they hold up to being dropped in their cases despite the moving parts.
I love the accent 😂…trousers and bloody buffing it up….i love it! No phone is perfect right? But for most you will enjoy it and that good locks is a great app!
With phones coming out nearly every week it's hard to believe that every phone is used as "full time phone for a week". Maybe it's a running joke of Uncle Spurt, I don't know 😅
Ha, it sure is hard to keep up! For these review videos I always have my SIM inside the phone for at least 6-7 days. Ideally I'd spend longer testing each one, but yeah, that stack of new blowers isn't getting any shorter!
Yep, the deals were mind blowing. No cost after trading in my slightly screen cracked Note 20 Ultra, and received NFL Sunday Ticket for this season free, and the additional memory free. Could pass it up ditto.
@richardponce1580 Traded in a Z Flip 4 but with the balance and tax in my state, still just a little over $100! Samsung knew they screwed up last time around and received a lot of backlash. I also got the Galaxy watch 6 with $250 trade in value. So all in all, very satisfied!!
With my flip 4 i have to carry a fibre cloth with me due to all the smudges and the dust the screen attracts they really need to fit it with some kind of dust repellant screen protector.
good info. I love my flip 5 too. Oh by the way, what game are you playing on it? I am looking for a role playing game like that, running around as a single character. like Wow or RPG games.
What's the folding bit like on screen? I've had the flip 3 for almost 2 years now and the centre fold has split on several occasions meaning I've had to have the screen protector replaced. Is this still an issue on the flip 5?
When you say "hacked" you're being disingenuous. I miss the old days when rooting your phone was desirable, with custom roms, ported software & all manner of adaptations & designs available. Now, i don't bother, it's still appealing to be able to have full control over the very expensive device that you own, but other than a few volume tweaks & such, there's little of interest. If i was a victim of an apple lobotomy, things might be different.
"Apple lobotomy" 😂 so appropriate and true, they might as well name that their next one. It does handicap you, apple gives users zero control over anything
absolutely. android is mostly flexible enough nowadays that the effort of jailbreaking it isn’t worth it for what you get, at least in my opinion. i can absolutely see why someone would jailbreak anything running apple operating systems
Apple lobotomy. Seemingly insulting but really it isn't it's spot on. I switched back to Android when I realized that by linking everything into your apple ID, apple is cleverly locking people in beyond items in the ecosystem. Logically then, once that process begins you have a limited amount of time before switching is unreasonable due to how much you have to start over with. Once you realize that, it comes down to a simple question. Do you want complete control or can you turn off that nagging part of your brain and enjoy a curated experience? I couldn't.
When is the Flip 6 launching? Hmmm I have a Note 20 Ultra, and ready to get something new in the USA. Should I wait? Really not interested in the s23 Ultra, seems bland and too big. The telephoto lens should be standard for ANY "Flagship" category phone too, SHAME. The crazy super zoom feature I barely used on my Note 20 Ultra, so I can live without it.
How hard do you have to scratch the screen with your nail to cause dents? I'm afraid that if I buy the Flip 5, you will have dents (scratches) in your screen from those nails.
Hi Chris I got my z flip 5 256gb on 9/7/24 from cash generator for £400 . Proof can be provided . Besides 1 little scratch on back of phone its nearly brand new .
Thanks for the review. Just got a Galaxy watch 6 classic just to let me keep from digging a phone out of my pocket all the time. Seems like this is just what I need. Don't use a phone much but need to carry one. Will let me get rid of my Pixel 6 Pro that overheats and shuts down in 15 minutes outdoors during the summer months.
My mrs got a flip 4 and i got the fold 5 both lasted less than 10 months both inside screens stopped working. Fold lost sound also. Samsung claimed they werent under waranty and found every reason not have them fixed connected to nothing to do with flex cable. Saying they have never heard of these issues before (well known issue and flaw world wide) End result was 2x £2000+ paperweights.... 2 weeks ago we got 2x new Google Pixel 9 Pro XL. Will never buy another samung again. 10 years of support towards the company and to be treated like that isnt acceptable. Precisely why they only sold 250k devices on release of the new.
Great review and finally a reviewer who knows how to pronounce the letter Z :) I have iPhone 13 mini and I love the small size of it but ever since I turned 40 it seems my eyesight is getting worse and I soon need a selfie stick to read anything from the thing... so, I think this could be the next best thing for me. I get the bigger screen but still have relatively small phone in my pocket, win win
That's the way Z is pronounced over here in the UK...& well done for pronouncing it as it _should be_ for a Brit Chris....unlike some other 'plastic' brit reviewers, who are saying it the American way...really makes me cringe! 🙄
I'm almost a heavy gamer.. there is some ripples on where I toggle to move the characters. I cannot feel the ripples, but see them. Do you have that too?
If apple does not release a flip phone this September, I’m buying this. I’m done waiting for them to catch up while releasing a new camera every year… NO ONE NEEDS A STUDIO QUALITY CAMERA, DONT CARE WHAT THEY CLAIM. A CAMERA UPGRADE IS NOT WORTH $1200!
I've had an iPhone for 16 years and finally swapped to Z Flip 5 x I was bored with iPhone my new phone is amazing and I haven't missed my iPhone once GO FOR IT YOU WON'T REGRET IT
I dont know how to chance the swipe down to change the toggles on the front screen on my z flip 5 but as i have the gw4 i just swipe down on the watch and toggle on the sleep mode and it puts my phone on do not disturb on the modes and routines (sleep ) till i turn it off on watch or phone works well when im off to my bed
I have the z flip 3 for over a year now. The screen cracked with in 6 months and when I fold it, it shuts off completely. This last week it just shuts off without a power cord in it. When I have a charger on it, it gets really hot. I don't think I would ever get one of these again.
I guess you were unlucky. Had my flip 3 for a bit over 2 years and have no issues except for a tiny scratch in the middle of the screen. But since I always have insurance I got a full new phone just last week. I had a Samsung S10 once which had a lot of issues. Got a new one and no issues whatsoever and don't know anyone else with issues either. It's just bad luck. If your phone if fairly new just go back to the store and demand a new one. The things you mentioned shouldn't be happening to any phone.
My Flip 5 has been making a nasty crunchy sound when opening. I am super careful with keeping it clean and away from dust but still after a few months crackling when opening.
I have a Z Flip 5 since more than a week now, and just using it and putting it in my pocket (and I am very careful), it has already big scratches on the rear glass. They say it is Gorilla glass, but my old smartphones don't get as many scratches as that in this amount of time... Even the plastic case that I have now takes less scratches.
Flip or fold phones are not ready yet. Maybe in 3 years time the technology will be much more mature. The crease and not being able to open the phone up completely straight is a problem.
ZOMG I just listened to you with recent headphones on. You always got that piano music in the background??? Also. Serious question. I’m stuck on iPhone right now and I hate the Apple Watch…. I’ve tried the Xiaomi S1 Pro and like it but do you have a best of recommendation for none Apple Watches on iPhone? Cheers!
@@racheld315 sorry to hear your phone broke. I guess in this case it depends what you preffer and what your budget is, since I believe the Samsung cost more than the Google pixel. Also the Motorola Razr+ or Ultra, depends of your location is not bad too. I believe the front screen is superior to Samsung's and can open most of the apps where Samsung's is still limited to widgets
👍👍👍👍👍 "What is usually dinky ....and fits in your pants"??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 why Chris you have showcased why I never did well in school, I thought that you were talking about my blasted wallet that with this terrible economy is usually close to empty but yes this phone is truly eye pleasing and I like it. Actually most of the foldables put out this year are good looking I am starting to look real desirable. Good dancing by the way 👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
tried a few but settled on a clear shock proof case from fleabay for about a fiver! shows off the mint and alu chassis best. samsung offerings are a rip off shame they dont do the aramid carbon case anymore. also a screen protector for the front screen is super necessary
