Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 vs Z Flip 4 - So Much Better! 

I realised that the reason I get more battery life out of Flip 5 is possibly due to the extended use of the larger exterior screen instead of the upgraded hardware. On Flip 4 I used to unfold the phone more often and thus expend much more battery.

Nice review, but I disagree with you on one point - it is absolutely worth upgrading from the 4 to the 5. If nothing else, Samsung is giving us $900 for the 4 as a trade in - that's an insane value. On top of that, the massive cover display is far more useful than the tiny one on the 4, combined with the improved hinge (I hate the uneven gap on the 4), faster / larger capacity memory, and improved battery life and processor - it really would be silly for zFlip 4 owners to hang on to the phone and not upgrade to the 5. So you essentially get all those improvements for a hundred bucks, maybe two? Should be a no brainer upgrade.

I'm gonna get the flip 5 this summer since the price range is finally attainable for me. Stores are doing discounts on flip 4 and flip 5. Since some stores sell flip 5 with the same price tag as flip 4, it's not even a hard decision anymore😂

Pro tip for better battery: set a routine to turn on battery saver when the phone is closed. Extends my batter life quite a bit.

Am I the only one who thinks in the split screen comparisons for both screen brightness and photo quality that the Z Flip 4 looks better?

My new flip 5 should be in the mail today! Super excited about it! Im currently on a 4 but the main reason i upgraded is not because of the bigger front display but because the 5 comes with an 8 Gen2 processor. I was using an s23+ a while back and I can tell you that chip is absolutely amazing!! Smooth, lightning fast, and you get waaay better battery life with it!

My main reservation with the flip is I live by a beach so I'm around sand a lot... and the lack of dust resistance stresses me out a little bit

Nice review. With regard to the battery, it makes complete sense that it should be greatly enhanced from the 4, just as my s23 ultra is much better than my s22 ultra. I run two lines, and tried an iPhone 14 Pro for about 90 days. It felt like a nice camera, that happened to have a phone. I'd even take a regular s23 all-day long over the overrated 14 pro. Anyway for my other line I have my s23 ultra. If I know I'm going to take more important pictures, I'll grab my Ultra, otherwise, I'll forward calls to my Flip 4 (soon to be 5) and call it a day. But yes, battery optimization between the s22 ultra and the s23 ultra is VERY much improved. So I'm looking forward to a similar improvement between the Flip vs 5. I'll definitely open it less often so that will also improve the battery life.

Hey Matt, in the previous video (Z Flip3 vs Z Flip4 ) you mentioned that the spine of the Z Flip3 developed a bend and that the crease was deeper after about a year of usage. So I was wondering if something like that has happened to the Z Flip4.

I might’ve missed it but something not mentioned in this video is the Flip 5 has usb 3.2 instead of the previous 2.0 which is a huge upgrade in terms of transferring files wired. I’m transferring files rn on my Flip 4 and it’s sooo slow, it’ll be a nice change to have modern file transfer speeds for large files

The trade in deal from Samsung is so great right now if you have a paid off Flip 4 that I would definitely do the uograde to the 5 though.

I always wanted to try the flip since the 3rd gen but was hesitant cos of the battery life. Coming from an s22+ to the z flip 5, i didn't find the less battery capacity to be cumbersome. Probably cos I spend most of the time on the external display cos it felt natural. The inner display just felt so thin and long to my liking. Still prefer this to the curve s23 ultra, though.

I had issues with dust getting into my flip4 hinge and keeping it from unfolding all the way. I hope the new hinge design helps with this issue as I'm trading up!

What about the glass on the front for dropping, or cracking? My Flip 4 has the plastic cover on the inside and it has already peeled in the crack, and the hinge broke right away. I hope the 5 is better...

The only thing preventing me from switching my s22U to the z flip lineup is the cameras. When they have a flagship cameras on the flip I will definitely switch

They should make the Flip 6 have a complete screen on the outside as well, and build in another flip to protect that screen. Then the Flip 7 can put a screen in that too. they should go to a 3.4" screeen for that one straight away, to avoid having to open the flip, so you can then open the... flip.

I bought a Z flip 4 a few days ago for trade-in to the Z Flip 5 and I love playing with it. Sure some may see it as a gimmick but something is just so satisfying bout opening it and closing it. I also just think it’s beautifully designed and just fun to use, something you can’t explain but we’re starved for fun with our phones again. I also think it’s underrated being able to take selfie pics/vids with the main camera while having a view finder. You get to always use the best cameras on the device. I’m sold on the form factor, can’t wait for my Flip5 to come in. My only minor gripe is I wish the opened display was wider like the Razr, no where near as bad as the outer Fold display but from using an iPhone I think it’s a tad too narrow. Def still usable and not too bad though Trade-in deals are insane btw, I only paid $50 to upgrade after trade-in plus the free 512gb is awesome, it’s no wonder people are snatching it up and it’s selling almost twice as much as the last version. Anyone interested should hop on it soon!

Amazing phone, although the only complaint I have is that I think the lock button/fingerprint scanner should be in the lower part of the phone .

Great review as usual. Still don't quite see the need for this form factor but Samsung definitely improved it a lot this year. I used to have a Japanese beetle problem but started getting my lawn treated for grubs a few years ago and that pretty much did for them.

I love my flip 4. I have a bit of battery anxiety. I've never had any issues with dust (I keep it in a case that closes tight)... But I did drop it recently causing some damage to the hinge. It still opens, but I can feel a bit of internal 'not-niceness' inside the hinge. Doesn't hamper the function though. Can't wait to upgrade to the flip 5.

Had to get my flip 4 fixed twice over the hinge locking up. Second time they wanted $500. I 100% recommend taking the 950 trade in credit and paying 49.99 to get the 5 for your 4 through Samsung.

So I've had the z flip 4 for a little over a year now, and I am that maniac that uses the cover screen for RU-vid! And that's partly why I'm interested in getting the flip 5! I work a security job and Im constantly wanting to listen to RU-vid videos during my job, and for the most part the content doesn't focus on visuals which makes it fine to run with my phone closed; (because I love that it's subtle and perfectly pocket sized) but there are times when something visual is referenced in the video, and I wanna just quickly be able to just peek at the visuals without fully unfolding the phone. And I've been using good locks multi star for this, but the outer screen is just too small for it to be as convenient as I'd like it to be. Conversely; what's made me hesitant to make the switch is that big outer screen too! Because I like that my flip 4 folds up and I feel like my important screen is protected and the outer one is small enough it can be protected from damage by my case. So my debate is, is the outer screen on the 5 at risk for shattering?? Should I make the jump? Idk! 😢

Mine comes tomorrow cant wait tbf, i used the flip 3 i loved it but battery was terrible , so I returned, Ik it probably not better than standard phones in certain areas but just offers something enjoyable about using it. When i had the flip 3. I enjoy my iPhone but planning to go all in this flip experience. Hopefully it goes well.

This was said by another reviewer who mentioned how having a smaller screen led to him using his phone less and connecting more with real life. I feel like the flip 5 takes away from this aspect, which I would note is a critical reason to buying a flip phone.

Please compare the space it consumes when you take picture or video. 10secs video could be as high as 200mb space which doesn't make sense for Samsung phones

Everyone talks about the great screen size but idk it seems dumb to me since it sort of defeats the whole purpose of a flip phone. It seems like an unworthy compromise especially since it might lack in the case department.

Overall, it is a very nice and professional video, except that I did not agree with the conclusion regarding the working time of the battery. The statement in favor of Flip 5 is unscientific.

I agree, those with the Galaxy Flip 4 probably do not need to upgrade, unless in the US where they can get great pre-order deals via trade-ins. Speaking from the UK, those deals are absent so to upgrade costs nearer £600 (trade-in of £440 on Flip4) and the improvements are not really worth that. If you do not have a trade-in then if you can get the Flip 4 for £599 (seen recently) then that is a good saving of £450. A cheaper entry point if you want to give the flips a first try. The problem with the Flip 5 is that in three months, secondhand it will be only worth £500 and that is a big loss if you do not like it. The upgrades on the Flip 5 are nice to have, but none make me excited, as they have already been seen on other flip phones from other OEMs. Nice but no “giant leap for mankind”. Not sure where they can go with the flip form factor going forward. Prices seem to be creeping up again, and a third rear camera looks tricky. Still unsure the pros outweigh the cons, and the £1050 UK price gets a great choice of flagship premium candy bar phones.

The first flip hinge is so weak. Flip3 has the best hinge and when Flip 4 came out the hinge was the thing that caused me not to upgrade my phone. I was shocked how stiff the hinge was. What's the point if I can't flip open the phone smoothly. I was like it's not even a flip anymore it's a fold because it's impossible to flip it open. I had to PRY it open on a friends flip4. Thank god flip5 fixed the stupid stiff hinge business. Still I think I am staying on my flip3 till it breaks.

you knoooowwwwwww... im all about using non 3rd party phones, but, this Flip5 has me tingling in the right places. Tho that crease, these creases on these flips and folds make the phone feel incredibly cheap and broken. IF they can get rid of it, say by 90-95%, of it, i may be finally sold.

Man i loved my fold 4, but got rid of it after 5 months. The inner screen is just too delicate and scratches so easily because its plastic, regardless of what they call it. It is not thin glass, its plastic and gets scratched up so easily. I want to trade my s23U for the flip, but then itll get scratched and be a fingerprint magnet and ill regret it, so i won't do it. I just graduated college and soon start my MBA program, so hopefully ill be out of the insulating field soon and can own a more delicate phone without worrying about fiberglass particles ruining the screen. Oh and ill never go back to the fold unless they change the shape, as the cover screen being so long and skinny is awful to use and i certainly dont want to unfold my phone all the time out in public like a dbag.

Am I the only one who notices videos that require a super sharp macro lens (cooking videos, small parts mechanical videos, and in this case, cell phone videos) feature men who literally have the hairiest arms?? I can’t take my eyes off of the arm hair. It’s very distracting lol please tell me I’m NOT the only one who notices this!!
