Excellent... This is the best explanation as to why this defrosting element fails over time... that I have read in RU-vid/elsewhere. I believe this chap is saying... 1: debris may collect over time in the drain (say, onion skins) 2: backup in the drain will affect the efficiency of the defrosting activity at the top 3: frost/ice at the top will cause failures in the foam and further affect defrosting at the top 4: an additional defrost heater at the top may/will help, but is a hack 5: the front panel must seal well to ensure that less humidity gets inside the back panel 6: the real problem, the drain, maybe fixed with a longer copper/metal strip being inserted into the drain... and coupled with the existing main defrost heater I have looked carefully at the old and new panels in this YT video. I do not see material differences between them, save wear on the old panel. -- In my case, after eight (8) years... ice began to build up and the fan made a noise. I removed the front panel to find ice at the top and not at the bottom. Water had got into the foam and frozen. I carefully over 2-3 hours sequeezed out the frozen water... using a hair dryer and paper towels. My panel (foam) does not appear to be worn (no broken bits). I will have to do another careful check. I will do the following: 1: purchase the additional heater for the top ($30) 2: purchase the addition to the drain ($10), to reduce freezing 3: carefully review how the foam seals in the panel function 4: properly re-install the old front panel, ensuring that the panel is pushed high and screwed carefully in, so that the edges make a proper seal. -- Question: A: I notice that the entry point for the refrigerant at the very top... the black foam stuff is being pushed into the frig area as a result of subsequent freeze ups. Does this matter? Observation: - I can use the Force Defrost Diagnostic Mode on the front door of the refrigerator - Control/Display Panel. This appears to defrost the frig, without taking the panel off. Is this correct? I note, that the compressor is OFF when the Force Defrost Mode is on ('rd'). - the Samsung people who designed the software/user errors codes were definitely HIGH when they did the design, as there is no logic to the assignment of Diagnostic Codes. I am rather disappointed, as no credible design group would arrive at such an outcome. The next refrigerator that I buy, I will check the error code logic/terminology first, as this may be an indication of core competency. -- Conclusion: The refrigerator is now defrosting with the additional heater cord wrapped around the defrost coil. You will have to cut/snip the 'finger' thing to fit into the drain hole. I used a Dremel tool to cut/grind the old finger thing off. I put the refrigerator into Demo Mode while I performed the changes. It is useful to learn the Modalities for both Diagnostic and Demo Modes. Force Defrost (nr) is useful. It times out in 20 minutes and stops beeping. I found it a little difficult to snap the front panel back on. It did not 'seat' well. After moving some of the wires around it fitted more readily. The 'white screws on both sides at the bottom of the front panel are barely long enough.

Nice job dude, very concise informative and to the point. Wish I would have found your video before doing my repair the other day. Had to replace the fan and defrost temp sensor w/ drain clip only issue is I couldn't confirm new fan was operating, even after using the magnet trick on door sensors.

Glad it helped even a little! It does take some time for the fan to kick on. Probably best to turn the unit on and wait about 30 mins to an hour before trying the magnet. 🧑‍🔧

I need to do this exact repair. I saw the Supco aftermarket repair and was worried about altering the manufacturer’s design even though it seems to be a good solution as well. Your explanation of why the issue is happening to begin with makes sense and I would rather replace the back panel first before doing the Supco mod as I seem to be having the same issues as well. Hello Christopher, Glad you found this video helpful! The aftermarket heaters do work well but it really is a band-aid to a gunshot wound. These repairs can be costly, so we do recommend trying the aftermarket heater options as it can be a lot cheaper. Just make sure it is wrapped tight so it doesn't have a risk of melting the plastics. We are a professional shop so we try to stray away from these repairs but if a client would like us to do it, we advise the limitations and liabilities before proceeding. Thank you! 🧑‍🔧

Great video. Thanks for taking the time making it. The bottom panel of my Samsung French Door RF4287HARSonly only had a tab on the left side and it wouldn't release the panel. The tab wouldn't press in so using a flat head screw driver I pressed in under the tab and also pressed in where the non existing tab was and the cover released. It didn't appear broken but must have been a factory defect.

I’ve watched a lot of videos on this topic as my Samsung is constantly freezing up. It is 10 years old. Does replacing the back panel seem to be a sure-fire fix? I am so tired of defrosting my fridge every 3-6 months! Outstanding job on this video!

My fridge temp is uneven inside. And won’t get colder than 51 degrees. The freezer is really cold as well. Reading -8. The beverage drawer is cold too freezing bottles water. Will this be more likely a fan issue?

You can access the drain in the back of the unit as well near the compressor. Drips in to the pan under the unit. 🧑‍🔧

Client did have a lot of grinding noises. This typically happens as the ice forms around the fan. By the time we got to it the fan was completely frozen solid so there was no more noise and no more cooling. We recommend defrosting it and clearing the drain. If that doesn't work, look into replacing this panel or you can try the 3rd party heater method. 🧑‍🔧

The screw at the bottom of the middle rack holder is freely spinning on my unit and it won't allow me to remove that screw. Any tips on how to get the bottom screw out so that I can remove this Twin Cooling part?

Remove all the other screws first. Grab the bottom of the twin cooling panel and pull towards you with good pressure while you try to unscrew it. If it still doesn't come out, cut out the plastic around it as you're going to replace the panel anyway. You can worry about getting the screw out later with brute force and cursing. Question- so the first time I ran into this issue all of the coils were frozen and iced over… 2nd time just the top, but I’ve been listening and keeping eye on it, when k check the oms in heater/brown wires I get nothing . But what your saying is whole panel needs replacing? How do I know which one to buy

Fan will take some time to kick on. It is not always on and the door needs to be closed for the fan to turn on (you can try with the magnet trick or put a camera inside the unit with the doors closed). The fan is only on when the doors are closed and cooling is in progress. It's highly unlikely you have a control board issue but it is possible the control board is not sending power to the fan...but again rare. 🧑‍🔧

Hello! Not sure how to guide you without being able to diagnose it in person. This video is made to help resolve the issue at hand. It is possible you are having a different issue. I'd recommend checking the heater, thermostat, drain , door gaskets and look for any cracks in the back wall that may cause air to come in. Hope this helps! 👨‍🔧

Unfortunately, it seems like you are having a sealed system failure. Check to see if it is covered under the 10 year compressor warranty with the manufacturer. 👨‍🔧

I lost power and after power came back it doesn’t cool. I did a factory reset and drop the top temp to 37 and the bottom to 0. There is no ice on the back panel. The coil brown/wires read 136 ohms. The small fan behind the panel did not turn on.

Honest question……the ice prevented the fan from turning. When defrosted, why replace the whole panel? Could you not have replaced the fan only? Was the panel warped?

The fan is functional most of the time after is ceases. After a defrost, it will likely work fine as long as it doesn't burn out. But yes the warping is the problem causing air infiltration. This is what we've trying to mitigate. 🧑‍🔧

Thanks. My fridge does not cool. No ice build up either. I ran diagnostics for the Samsung Family Hub and the error code was 22c (fridge fan error). I bought the exact part and installed it. Still no cooling. Freezer compartments are fine. Could it be the thermistor in the fridge compartment?

I put a hairdryer on the panel for a bit before attempting to remove. 2nd time around, first time I lost styrofoam from pulling on it.

Defrost the unit. Best practice is to unplug the unit, and leave the doors open for 24 hours. Good time to clean the unit as well since everything needs to come out. Wouldn't recommend putting any dry heat in the unit. Use a steamer if you cannot defrost the unit. You can also use the test mode system to help you defrost the unit on the control panel but we're getting too technical at that point. 🧑‍🔧
