Amazing video as usual 👍 Thanks for letting us part of your experiences and your journey. I love to see your amazing soldering skills, especially desolder and solder the BGA chips are so satisfying to watch 😍 I have no clue how you everytime achieve, to not remove also the little parts around the chips itself, like smd resistors 😅

I was kind of surprised you could just go out and buy a new one that's compatible. I remember with hard drives you said like even with 6 months they change enough that the PCB isn't compatible anymore. It's also kind of surprising that less than half the device is actually occupied. I figured the PCB would take up the whole enclosure.

How likely are you to use this newly bought evo 860 for other cases, because clearly you kinda invested money in it to have donor board? Is it rare that you get SSD and can you for example use this board later on for different size, for example 250gb?

I find it interesting that the controller just accepted the new NAND directly. Does the firmware contain ECC data and bad blocks mapping for the old nand? Or is the firmware stored on the nand itself and you basically transfered all settings by swapping the nand?

I had a power cut and took out the two 0R links on the Rx, and Tx lines. Repaired that and I can now see the SSD but I am not able to read any data. I have some of my daughter's photos on the SSD that I would like to recover. Any thoughts, please? Thank you for your time.

When you're new it can be. Whenever I had to use a hot air gun on a PCB I used to tape anything I didn't want moving with Kapton tape, worked a treat. People also use aluminium foil to act as a heat shield when removing BGA chips.

The chip is degraded with bad sectors (black dots among the green), causing read errors. Windows running R-Studio would choke and become unstable.

I run four computers; two of them have a Samsung 860 & the third 870, "how reliable are solid drives in general"?
@awilliams1701
@awilliams1701 2 года назад
gamer's nexus news video today showed various hardware failures from a particular company (I'm guessing they sell either parts or pre-builts) and for storage the SSDs were much more reliable than a hard drive. Hell I have a 830 in my old computer that just got retired last year. It ran for nearly 10 years and still works.

I've been using a 500GB 860 and just got the 870 for my brother's laptop, his 2009 HDD finally began to die. I've been constantly downloading and deleting data from mine for the past 3 years with zero issues. Just updated the FW recently with no data loss, even though I made a back-up just in case. Happened to shock it 2-3 times with ESD ending in PC shut-offs. I've vaped in my room (knowingly) the first year of its use, opened it up the second year, cleared the residues with alcohol and closed it back up. All in all, given the idiotic amount of torture it endured, seems to be a pretty damn durable SSD. 😀🤘 I'm guessing the user in this video spilled straight liquid over his and kept using it without a proper clean while still keeping important non-backed up data on it. Here we are, hundreds of dollars later, witnessing his poor choices. Hope he gets his data back. 🙏

Do you (or any hard drive recovery shop anywhere) only recover data or is it possible to refurbish the drive so it will work again A lot of people say to just buy a new drive, but what if I want to have 1TB IDE drive or 400MB (no more, no less) IDE drive, they dont make theese anymore so if one breaks on me, I am scrued
@Datarecoveryguru1
@Datarecoveryguru1 2 года назад
Refurbishing hard drives with focus on further reliability is limited and very circumstantial to the type of problem. As a result, it is not a good strategy to rely on a company's ability to refurbish. In some countries with high population and low to no discretionary income, there is some demand for refurbished hard drives. Price is the #1 factor. Unless we are talking an electronics related failure (more rare compared to the majority of other type of failure), the problem is that refurbished won't be reliable long term and the client ends up being angry and disappointed. On that note, there is also a rise in predatory practices, where a refurbisher hides the flaws with the drive and scam people. Data backup is the proper strategy to not get screwed.

@djawana

The black chip is the NAND, or basically where the files are stored. The clear gel-like substance is flux which just helps the solder paste (black “sand”) not mess up when being applied.
@Aviator747a
@Aviator747a 2 года назад
The chip is a NAND chip, this is where the data is housed. The clear liquid is flux, it's a cleaning agent to help with soldering. The "black sand" is solder paste, it's very small balls of solder instead of normal wire solder. Solder paste is used for surface mount devices and parts.
