You are really good at explaining to non techie people like me...question, do you still think its better buy then the sandisk extreme pro ssd? I watching most say it better but risk of corrupt file problems with this brand now? Have you exp this by any chance?
I just got the T9 SSD love it How do we update Software or will it send notification I don't get a Pop-up when I plug it it how do we Fix that on W11 Please
Dude, SUPER HELPFUL! upgrading from my T5. Which I use as a working drive to edit photos and video. seeing you transfer 160GB in under 3 minutes is crazy! this has sold me on the T9 over T7...time to speed up workflow! gonna get the 2TB, used to only 1TB working drive to I can store more and ready to shoot more 4k files! Great video, was not bored, great visuals and info. Awesome work my man! Thank you 🏴☠
Random benefit to that USB-A to USB-C cable that's included: it's great for connecting the iPhone 15 series phones to older cars that have CarPlay. I ran into issues with lightweight (and as it turns out, charging only) A-to-C cables, but the cable that comes with the Samsung T-series SSDs is perfect! They're nice and short, and can handle the data transfer requirements for CarPlay connections. I stick with the USB-C only cable for connecting my Samsung SSD to the Mac.
I am still using my Samsung T7 Touch silver and I really love it. I prefer it among all portable SSD's since it relies on fingerprint scan for security.
I just bought the 4GB T9. I absolutely love it. I've been using Samsung's SSD's since the T5, and have never had a problem. Okay, once I had to reformat and reload the firmware on my T7 Shield, but it solved the problem and is still running strong.
I've had good results with a Samsung M.2 drive I've had for many years. I did have a Samsung 2.5 " SSD croke, but all the others I have had are going strong. I also have some Plexor drives, that lasted a long time, and are still good.
@@jfeeney100 yea, i just had a customer's 860 Samsung SSD (SATA) croak , probably from around 2019 out of a Dell laptop. I believe the model # was 860 or was it 870, can't remember , but yea, it's unfortunate. A recovery specialist wants about 1400 to 1500 USD, that's what will make one really croak!
Hello Andrew, Noticed one thing watching you since long time 😊. You look to be reduced weight and looks more trimmer now compared to before😊. Looking very good now 👌 And as always thanks for the nice review . I am using samsung T7 now 😊, T9 looks good.
I just bought the T7, not open yet, I wanted to use it to transfer videos off my Android , is it easy to select videos off a Samsung phone ? Since I won't use it more than a couple times a year, is there any reason why I should consider the T9
@@samueladams584 Hi 👋🏻 The T7'i model is quite sufficient, I can transfer the photos/videos I want from my IPhone 15 Pro max to the T7 or vice versa easily, it is a very fast storage product. Depending on your usage scenario, the T7 will definitely be enough.
Thanks :) This was great useful info. Another factor here is the T9 costs about twice as much as the T7. :) I was going to sell my T7 Shield I haven't used yet in anticipation of Black Friday sales on the T9. But if 50GB and under files, which is what I'd be transferring mostly, transfer at the same rate, maybe I'll just keep my T7. Plus I really don't like the lint problem. I think the reason for that is they needed to make it porous for heat disipation.
One thing I found out, the included usb-c to usb-c is not capable of sustained speeds. if you say use it for 4k video capture on 15 pro as an example, after 28 seconds, you will see dropped frames. I bought some usb c cables which were usb 3.2 gen 2 and they worked fine. silly that Samsung does not include the cable meant for those speeds
Speed tests are largely meaningless until you tell us what drive format you used. Most likely you used ExFAT which is a big no-no on the Mac when it comes to getting good performance. Reformat as APFS and run the Black Magic Speed test so we can get a better feel for how fast the drive is. Thanks.
I reformatted the drive as NTFS because I'm only ever using it with windows machines and this also allows for TRIM support. Transfer speeds were also quite poor with the factory exFat partitioning. Transfers are faster with NTFS, but still a bit erratic and may still show slowdown after a while. So, why even bother with this drive unless you're getting it cheap on sale? An nvme or standard SSD in an external enclosure is probably going to perform far better and more consistently.
The TB4 ports on Mac support USB 4.0 which is even faster. It will not likely have backwards compatibility for these drives only now hitting the market. 2x2 was an interim spec bump. IMO do not buy. Wait for USB 4.0 which is already in some products unless you really need a SSD now and cannot wait
No other model interests me unless it has a fingerprint scanner, which the T7 Touch has. Therefore, there is still nothing better than the T7 Touch for me.
I get that the rubber makes the T9 more durable, but if the metal underneath dissipates heat, than where will that heat go? Seems like it would go into the rubber mostly, and rubber isn't a good conductor of heat. Is that rubber sheath removable? The cup analogy for the cache was great.
The cover is not removable, unfortunately. BUT, I havent had any issues with the T7 Shield which has basically the same. They must have saw no issues with the T7 Shield cover so implemented the same thing here with the T9! Im actually surprised they didn't do a coverless version though. You can get a regular T7 without the rubber coating.
@@AppleInsider Yeah, testing must have showed the rubber protection was ok. If I was going to wrap the drive with rubber protection, however, I might have went with a cover design that leaves patches of the metal underneath visible. But hey, that's just me, and I'm not an engineer, lol. I wondered the same thing, why isn't the T9 available without the extra exterior protection. Hopefully it's coming soon, for I don't need the extra protection. These little drives are pretty amazing. the T5/T7 speeds are plenty fast for most of us. I still have a 560 MB/s 2TB G-Drive Mobile SSD from six years ago that has never given me an issue and is still running strong. The reliability and lifetime of these SSDs is impressive.
I am not a film creator, I am not moving folders of 100GB. At this moment the T7 is a better deal. I own the T5 (500GB) and a T7 Touch 2TB. I am quite sure you will not notice a speed difference in normal conditions. So far I can see a normal T7 has a lower price compared to the T9.
Samsung for the love of god please do more colours. Where's orange or something bright for a change? I have a dozen T7s floating around my studio and I'd like to be able to tell from a glance what something is in or easily tell an assistant "bring the orange one".
This 170gb of cache is for the 4tb models of the T9 only. At 2tb cache sizes are more in line with the T7. I Googled it. Is cache size super important. Yes and no. I have a 500gb T5 to transfer files between computers. I am a volume photo editor and my folders are routinely over 100gb. I think my cache is 23gb. I regularly over run the cache. Is my drive slower? Yes. Is it unbearably slower? No. Is that 5 minutes that you save transferring a 160gb file all that important to you? Only you can answer that.
Great Video thanks for the info. I have the T7 shield and love it. I also have a new iPhone 15 Pro Max. As a new RU-vidr, and learning the whole videography/Cinematography world, I am hoping to use the ProRes Log feature but struggling to understand it. Writing to USB-C on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is very slow. Play back from the external is painful. Makes ProRes Log frustrating to the point of a non-starter for a newbie. Any advice?
The T9 is not available in Malaysia. My guess that only selected countries will received it right away while other countries will have to wait for a while. I'll go for the T7 Shield by then. UPDATE: I just found out the T9 is already available, I just didn't know where to look and I did not keep searching hard enough. I may buy it around next month.
It depends on your needs but just get an external SSD enclosure and the fastest SSD that a Mac allows which is 40gbps or 5GB/s… I’d recommend either Acasis or Hyper USB4 enclosures for Macs… for iPhones it’s another story since USB3.2 isn’t so standardized
@@josebalan379 the Acasis USB4 enclosure is rather compact and lightweight and you get speeds of up to 3GB/s… the Hyper one is a tad big but includes a rubber sleeve for protection and can go even faster up to 3.5GB/s… again, depends on your use case
The fact that it is up to twice as fast does not really help us Mac Users as we lack the USB 3.1 2x2 necessary for the maximum speed. Somehow USB 4 does not support USB 3.1 2x2 and we will only get up to 1 TB speed not up to 2 TB speed so.
lol, I use my Seagate 7200 RPM HDD drive 2Tb for everything!! Runs cool, quiet, never fails, and doesn't have those notorious TBW crap!! My Wife first used the same drive I'm using for 1 year, then I used it for 2 years, then she took it back for 6 months! Now, I using it again with Windows 10 and 5 or 6 games like Sunken Land, Half Life, Diablo, GTA, C&C, and more...never had any issues with performance playing anything or cache, or booting! why pay double for a less dependable SSD
MAc book pro m3 max 2024 support thunderbolt 4 which can transfer data up to 40 Gbps , I believe macbook pro M3 support thunderbolt 3 and usb 4 but macbook pro M3 pro and macbook pro M3 Max support thunderbolt 4 and usb c 4
I really like the Samsung ssds, I use them since the T5 came out. They are small, compact, fast and reliable. The 9nly thing I hate about the new T7 shield and the T9 is that Samsung is still using that awful silicone cover over the ssd that collect dust and tiny specs out of your pocket like a crazy! I even removed that silicon cover of my T7 Shield as underneath ssd I'd just silver aluminum. I think that Samsung need to retching they materials fir cover.
Would you recommend this to save movies/tv series? I travel a lot and I’m not sure what hard drive to buy to watch movies and shows on the go on my MacBook Air
Hey thanks for the video @AppleInsider ! Is it possible to connect 4 tb samsing t9 to iphone 15 pro max?? SMB Say it's not cause it takes more power (W) than 2 tb ssd's ? Please tell me, Cause I want to buy 4 tb ssd and must be suere
Great Video... I Want To Know How to Backup Everything on My Samsung S23 Ultra to the T9 Portable 4TB SSD... USING Samsung Switch or Magician... Please Help and/or Advise...
great info. I am wondering if there is a same difference when editing or color grading in premiere or davinci resolve. I mean direct from the disk. Will both perform the same speed? When editing or grading RAW footage you can easily go over 50 gb working direct from the drive?
Bought 2 of the 4TB T9. Like the heat not happening with it vs. the T7. Is there any Thunderbolt 4 to Gen 2x2 adaptor out there usable for MacBook Pro M2?
Is the input watts same for 1, 2 and 4TB? What is the input watts? I guess iPhone 15 pro max is best suited for ssd since it has bigger battery. 15 plus will also do, but of no use since no 4K pro raw no body is gonna need T7.
When you made the note about the usbA cable, you also should have noted that not every type c port is the same neither. A user should first check what type c and gen it is before waisitng money on a drive which will never get to that speed on day your laptop
Don't get me started on USB-C! I did a whole video about why the standard is kind of awful! The idea is great but the implementation has been terrible. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BCAtA62Qyfc.html
@@AppleInsider okay, will watch. Thanks! Yeah the USBC was nice, but same issue as with all cables. Not only do different ports make a difference, also the vast amount of different quality cables makes it nightmare
I was in the process of buying two 4TB's and your video helped me to stop my purchase, thank you. To release this product with this restriction for OSX (Mac) is a costly mistake, in my case alone that was $800 lost in sales.
Purchased Crucial P3 2TB PCIe Gen 3 3D NAND NVMe M.2 SSD, up to 3500MB/s - CT2000P3SSD8 and the SSK Aluminum M.2 NVME SATA SSD Enclosure Adapter, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) $ 109.56 US. Cost of SAMSUNG T9 Portable SSD 2TB, USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 External Solid State Drive, Seq. Read Speeds Up to 2,000MB/s for Gaming, Students and Professionals, MU-PG1T0B/AM, Black $ 199.99 US.
I don 't understand what 's the point in buying a T9 if the speed is the same ? I use a Macbook Pro M3Max. And if you try to connect an SSD to a Macbook via a Thunderbolt 4 cable, will the speed be maximum?
@AppleInsider Great video, thanks for the info! I'm considering this T9 over the T7 due to the 2K read/write speeds, do the faster read/write speeds allow watching movies directly off the external ssd to be more efficient? (when plugged into a USB C 3.2 gen 2x2 port).
Haha, just bought a T7 and didn't even realise teh T9 excisted😂. However, I'm only using the drive casually and the tranfser speed is still sufficiet :).
Not sure but it could be because if you want to use a NVME you need a case for it. I think those cases are 100 dollars. 980 pro 1TB goes for like 90. I think this way it’s just a bit more affordable. Speeds of NVME are worth it tho imo
Samsung t9 4tb is around $350, a crucial p3 4tb is $189 add an acasis thunderbolt enclosure for 99. You’d come out with a faster, future proof and less expensive solution.
@@1simualityI never thought to compare the price between T9 4TB and a NVME case with crucial SSD. If you need 4TB that definitely seems to be the better option. If you just need 1TB but don’t really need thunderbolt it’s whatever. Personally I’d never need 4TB of storage in one SSD. I’ve never had more than 1TB in a device.
It comes with EXFAT and the samsung software. It gets 1000 MB per second, not 2000 MB. Is there any limitation in my macbook pro 16 M1 MAX for getting the Max speed? Im using the cable of the drive.
