First things first: This drive REQUIRES Thunderbolt 3. If your computer has a USB-C connector it needs to also have Thunderbolt technology built in. No Thunderbolt, no connectivity. Period. Additionally if you have an older Thunderbolt 2 or 1 equipped device it won't work with those computers either even with an adapter. I tried using it through a Thunderbolt 2 hub and that failed too. So compatibility is going to be very limited here.
Now provided you have a properly equipped Thunderbolt 3 computer you will see some serious performance out of this drive. On my 2016 Macbook Pro write speeds were at 1.7 gigabytes per second and 2.2 gigabytes per second on reads. That's the fastest external single drive I've ever tested. Remarkable. I had even faster write speeds on my Windows PC.
BUT - this drive gets hot when it's pushing data that fast. And when it does the drive will throttle itself, delivering lower write performance to prevent overheating. It doesn't take much to set it off either, so if you're capturing high bandwidth video or copying super large files you'll notice a slowdown on writes. I saw it happen running one of my benchmarks and popular tech site Anandtech found that it can sometimes drop to as little as 60 megabytes per second when writing over extended periods of time
If Samsung made a more utilitarian case with better thermal performance it likely would perform better. Unfortunately the target market for this drive are people who regularly tax their hardware and they will not be pleased with its inconsistent write performance under heavy load. But if you're not doing heavy writes you'll be pleased with what this drive can deliver.

It's not just thermal throttling that makes the drive slow down. The 970 Evo has what's called "TurboWrite" which is a cache that helps accelerate write speeds. The 500 GB drive has a total of 22 GB of it, and once that fills up, write speeds drop to 600 MB/s from the 2+ GB/s you see during the first few benchmarking runs. The 1 and 2 TB drives have 42 and 78 GB of cache, respectively, so they take more time to fill up, and once full, their speeds are twice as fast as the 500 GB. Considering that the prices of 970 Evos by themselves are half or less than what the external models are, the audience for these drives is going to be very limited.

Is there an adapter that works with this to use w/ USB/USBC/HDMI/Thunderbolt 2? I'd like to use one with my 2014 MBP.

hello...I got the 500GB today but I'm disappointed! can it take 68sec to move 17GB of folder? I tried with other large and small files but the speed is always more or less this! In your opinion is this normal?

I could see this as an option for someone who is editing videos on a laptop which doesnt have a way to have two internal drives so needs the fastest external drive in order to save time on rendering or exporting. Typically thos would be a commercial application where saving time saves money.

Thanks for this Lon. It is a great comfort that my choice to use the T5 is still the best choice for my Netgear X10 Plex DVR.

Jeez, throttles to nearly half write speed after 5 min. Wonder if the old usb ssd throttles?

@tom connors true. Hopefully pushes the price down on the normal ssd's, as they're still pretty fast too.

I wish I watched you review first I’m planning to use this as a boot drive for a 2017 iMac to avoid opening it for a little while longer lol. Well I guess I’ll see how it goes no wonder they are 199 for the 500gb.

after checking ssd price for samsung ssd, I am pretty sure samsung put 860 evo into t5. Also if you plan to use nvme to thunderbolt 3 dock and a 970 evo it is not worth it. the price for nvme to thunderbolt 3 is about $200. I just found out samsung ssd is pretty cheap for what you can get from it.
@victorxiao4379
@victorxiao4379 5 лет назад
my bad I found a $39 case that make 970 evo to thunderbolt 3. so if you don't drop your ssd, get diy instead of x5. but t5 is still very cheap for what you get.

@rajivrddadke5014

Bootable disk could be a bad idea considering it's heat throttling problem, so Samsung T5 is definitely better.

So expensive, so ridiculously expensive. given the price of a separately available M.2 NVMe SSD. So you pay well again for the ridiculously Thunderbolt license rights. When does Intel release this license. On this way thunderbolt never becomes popular.

Like this harddrive it's pretty but somehow the engineer forgot to implment the proper cooling it needs so it wont throttle! I mean for the price you pay for this thing then u should get full performance out of it all the time!

@@ericochoa4034 as others have noted, 5 minutes at those speeds would have filled the drive anyway. Also, like Apple? How? Apple make some of the best tech available, what are you even talking about?

@@MichaelGGarry and what I meant about being like apple I was just joking cuz they like to sue each other for copying each other's tech. Because of the 539 million apple just got awarded for saying samsung copied their iphone tech. Whether they actually did that is debatable.
