@@jimathybindlenim6359 yup same age when I first played, had the same impact as well. Only got into it thanks to an autistic guy who was very similar to Sheldon at my school ranting about how good it would be.
Goosebumps when it happened, but also the hatred it made you feel towards the enemy. This music, combined with Karen's tone and even fleet intelligence having that hint of tremble in his voice; it truly lit my passion for this series up.
Can you really imagine the setting for this? You go out to do something you think of as important, letting your mind drift from what truly is, and come back to find your home gone, destroyed in an act of spite and revenge. And it is only later that you learn that your own actions brought it. In a game with such little character depth, there are many deep messages. We would do well to listen.
I found it interesting last time I played the game that even though the characters kept it subtle and professional, if you payed close attention you could hear emotion and opinions. Such as the initial analysis of Karak and the preparation for the battle recording, you can hear the FI officer brutally strangling back any emotional responses. Later, you can tell he is NOT AT ALL BOTHERED that the frigate captain did not survive interrogation.
The moment you notice that the enemy is still here and attacking the cryogen pods, and that one of them is left...you will do *ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING* to save that pod, and nothing else in the world will matter to you. My house could've been on fire, flames licking the walls, and I still would've stayed long enough to save that pod and then save the game.
This is one of the odd moments is past gaming where for all intents & purposes people treated it like an "Achievement". They kept reloading and adjusting until every single god damn pod was saved. Not. One. More. Death.
+darkmage07070777 I made sure to build 9 salvage corvets at the end of the level before, along with some decoy scouts, and managed to capture each of the frigates. Not one pod was left, level was over in 3 minutes (excluding time waiting for docking sequences, and collecting the pods) and you got frigates out of it!
This still brings a tear to my eye and lump in my throat everytime I return to Kharak and hear this. You here the emotion and shock in the narrators voice.......stunning use of music in the best RT game of all time.
in tribute to an old comment that resumed the lyrics and all the feelings for this song.... ''Lamb of God, Who took the sins of the world, Have mercy upon us. Lamb of God,Who took the sins of the world, grant us peace.'' then the sky became a storm of fire and there was peace...
Romans 10:9-10 "That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved." And please repent of all of your sins and obey God's commands before it is too late 🙏. Amen 🙏
I was 9 years old when I played through Homeworld. That 3rd level probably changed my life. Still one of the most memorable moments in gaming for me. It will always be on my top ten list of games. Homeworld was a marvel of it's time and a true classic masterpiece.
This music became as well known as it is when Franklin Roosevelt died. All of the major radio networks needed to put on music while they readied the news report and each one independently chose this knowing that an Adagio is a slow piece of music. It has since been called by the BBC "The Sound of Mourning."
A good man who led his nation and many others to greatness and the preventing of evil triumphing across the world... a shame he died when a new darker era followed.
The Choral versions of Adagio for strings, based on Samuel Barbers version are actually called Angus Dei (which literally means Lamb of God), the Adagio for Strings part is often put as a subtitle to differentiate it from the many other Hymns etc. with the same or similar title, so it should say Samuel Barber - Angus Dei (Adagio for Strings, Choral Arr.) or something similar The Lyrics are :- Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. Which is based on John 1:29, obviously but you all knew that :P
I'm eternally impressed by how many different emotions and how many situations this song can perfectly fit... It is equally perfect when the Mothership launches, when Kharak is destroyed, when the Exiles' story is told and when you finally reach Hiigara...
Alright everyone, mission a resounding success, let's go home. All ships return to mothership. Engage hyperdrive. ... Oh my God... It's all gone. All ships, engage unknown fleet. Priority is to defend the cryo-trays. Show no mercy.
What is really amazing is how the story is told. Its presented by a few cut scenes and some dialogue but its still an incredibly deep and emotional story. One of my favorite games as a child and still probably one of the hardest games I have ever played.
This is the best version of Adagio for Strings. I fell in love with this back in 2000 playing Homeworld. Have since tracked down other versions of it but they don't have the vocals. this is my favorite version. I am thinking of recording the first 10 mins of the game and posting it. this music and the launch of the mothership are timeless and beautiful. I wish everyone could have experianced it back when the graffics looked awesome in comparison to the other games on the market.
Well, now that the remastered version is out, a whole new generation of gamers can experience the majesty that is Homeworld with just as impressive visuals.
@@Yogsoggeth It was remastered seven years ago, and I'm not sure what you mean by "a flop". It's rated as "Very Positive" on Steam and has sold over a million copies since the remaster. I just played through the campaigns of both remastered games over the last couple of days, and it's every bit as fantastic as I remember, including the graphics.
@@TheRealSkeletor Yeah, I have it installed on this laptop, to be honest. The updated interface in the remastered version lacked soul, and I still enjoy playing the original version of HW1, which luckily comes bundled. The lack of the YES song in the end credits was the biggest complaint people had with the remaster. Luckily you can find that on youtube :D
MultiCyberkitty. I also get teared up by this song and one the greatest most moving moments of my life was accidentally stumbling upon a full orchestra playing this out in Chicago. I couldn't move I just had to stand there and experience. :-)
Adagio for Strings came on my Pandora station today, and I looked it up to find out why I liked it so much and what it reminded me of. Of course it's Homeworld. I can't believe how much of an influence this game has had on me. The art design, storytelling, atmosphere, music, mechanics and everything else is just so perfect. It enters into my own aesthetics and storytelling in ways that I didn't even realize.
The overly dramatic one I listen to for homework. It's motivational because I feel like no matter what I'm working on the fate of humanity is at stake.
Still to this day the best game I have ever played. By a wide margin. Music, visuals, gameplay, story, replay value, etc. no other game has come this close to perfection. Homeworld 3 would be the one game for which I'd get a new engine. Come on Relic, back to the roots with you! :)
I have never played Homeworld. The most space opera/sim game I played was NDS Infinite Space, Star Wars Empire at War and Starpoint Gemini. Then, I saw the game movie. I thought "Cool." Then I saw the bit where they smashed the Kar Selim. I thought "Ah damn, hostile aliens as usual." Then I reached...this song. I have never played Homeworld and yet this song's moment made me feel as though something importantly cherished was wiped out completely and seemingly arbitrarily by a hostile force I had never even heard of, let alone begin to comprehend. "Long live Kharak."
I thought you people might like to know that an indie studio has bought the Homeworld licence (or is in the process of doing so) and is trying to fund both a relaunch of Homeworld for touch-screen media, and also Homeworld 3 through Kickstarter.
This is Captain Elson we have been battling reinforcement fleets to get here and we have lost many ships already. The Emperor's flagship is here together we can defeat him and the Taiidan fleet. I am placing squadrons Cor and J'sa under your command.
this song... it feels like it's cleansing my soul... absolutely breathtaking i wish they still had online support for the original game, i recently picked it up again after leaving it to gather dust for a while lol
+Inca Tinca You can. Being an old game it wouldn't be as enjoyable today, lucky for us all, Gearbox remastered it (along with Homeworld 2). Beautiful graphics, enjoyable gameplay, awesome story, I'm sure if you really want to, you can find a way to play it. I'd suggest you do that.
A beautiful piece of art that everyone should listen to at least once. The vocals are amazing, definitely top-tier. All of the emotions with the game make this a truly unique and beautiful, yet terrifying, moment when you travel back to Kharak.
spread the word. The old developers and many artists from relic who made the homeworld series are now making a similar series with there new company Blackbird Interactive. Its called Hardware: Shipbreakers. It looks amazing. And its supposed to be somewhat like Homeworld in the gameplay mechanics. Unknown if in same universe. But these are all the same guys from Relic bn the day. Including the amazing 2D artists who did the cutscenes. ENJOY!!!
I remember when I loaded into this mission for the first time I looked around and saw nothing Then turned the camera and the music kicked in right when I saw the planet
koffieslikkersenior How about a functioning multiplayer and mod support through steam? Homeworld had the most amazing mods...the star wars total conversion one literally added hundreds of individually modelled ships from the franchise :)
koffieslikkersenior plus the graphics are really fantastic, and they added better display scaling so you can actually use 1080 and then up to 4k resolution monitors and a new UI. And combined multiplayer for both games.
Well nearly 30 here. Playing Homewrold 1 seems like eons ago, yet I still shiver when i renember this scene ... "Everything's gone..." I want Homeworld 3!
i came here after watching a video of the hd remake. i never knew home world and never was a pc gamer, but my god, this is so beautiful and moving. in all my years of gaming, this takes a top spot in my favorite soundtracks
@12RulAll its from a game where you play a race named Kharak, this is the song you hear when they notice that there whole home(planet) along with there people have been blown into ashes that is spread around there space.
I hear this on the Warburtons advert, the burnt loaf. Damn it, it still makes me cry, and I mean how did they not notice how much it was like Kharak?!? Kharak forgive them!
All eyes were cast upward to the sky. The Scaffold -- the Moon herself -- was disintegrating into flame above them. The world was coming to an end. Soon the fires would claim the planet as well. All that was left was to pray. And so they prayed. "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us." "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant us peace." And then, the skies themselves caught aflame. And there was peace.
Alexandar Živkovič Even though i usually buy games on (Steam) sales, i could make an exception this time. This game is too good to let it slip through my fingers. Now it's on pre-order with a little discount (15%)
*** - - *** I love Homeworld saga despite i'm a little noob in 4x games. I still remember when i played this chapter since 6 or 7 years ago and i tried to save the cryo-trays and i failed everytime.
The vocal track to this is a catholic piece called "Agnus Dei" (Lamb of God)...Tenebrys just provided, as far as I can tell, an english derivation of the Latin original.
Really, that was the only way to finish the game. My first time through, I just completed that mission as required. Then I was still able to defeat the next level (meteor), but had absolutely no hope at all of even making it out of the starting area of the final mission. Had to replay it and salvage most of those ion frigates in the sphere like you did, then it was anticlimactically easy lol.
Every time I hear this song I want to replay the single player. I've done it since '99 and it's become a bit of a Christmas tradition lol. It's fun to mod the game to change things up a bit each time.
"Everyone.... everyone has lost something precious. Everyone here has lost homes, dreams, and friends. Everybody.... now Sin is finally dead. Now, Spira is ours again. Working together... now we can make new homes for ourselves, and new dreams. Although I know, the journey will be hard, we have lots of time. Together, we will rebuild Spira. The road is ahead of us, so let's start out today. Just one more thing... the people and the friends that we have lost, or the dreams that have faded.... Never forget them." - Yuna, Final Fantasy X
