I note his comment about American family trees. Being one (an American, not a tree), the majority of family trees I've seen are vertical, with the ancestors at the top coming down to the subject person. Interestingly, German family trees (call Stammbaum) are vertical but reversed, with the ancestor's at the bottom and working upwards to the subject.
