A long overdue full review of my custom taisho armor from Iron Mountain Armory. Since it was so lengthy I broke it into three separate parts. This is part one, the haidate and suneate.

Love your videos man. Your attention to detail and explanations of how you adapted your armor show that you've done lots of research and spent lots of hours in your armor. You inspired me to order a set myself and it should be done soon.

Thank you! What model of suit did you get? And congratulations!

@@SamuraiJames I got a kiritsuke kozane quite a bit like yours, but I asked if they would make a custom helmet like the one on the daimyo class edo haramaki do. They said they'd have the taisho team do their best and they were confident they could pull it off. I'm excited to see the results.

Can you email me your order number from Iron Mountain for your armor? They want to include something extra for you.

I'm glad you mentioned some of the differences between Edo Period armour and Sengoku period. I've found that most of iron mountains armour are honestly more representative of Edo era than anything else. The barrel shaped Okegawa nimai dou for instance was a very very late development. Typically wartime armour was much more angular and boxy. Look at mogami style do for example. We tend to view the history of Samurai armour through the fancier lense of the Edo Period.

I do wonder if some of that was a side effect of the physical condition of samurai / ashigaru during the Edo period vs Sengoku period. Modern people are on average probably of a similar size to Edo, and maybe that's why the repros often have that appearance?

@@SamuraiJames There is definitely a difference in general human shape from the Sengoku to now. I'd never be able to fit peoperly in a mogami or kanto gomai do. The waist section is hilariously tiny compared to upper chest area. They almost look like corsets. This is generally why iron mountain sticks to the style they do because it's easier to fit modern folk.

Corset is a great way to describe it. I can't fit that figure either.

Could you speak to the thigh loops on the haidate? I've got a set, but have no idea what those loops are for
@SamuraiJames
@SamuraiJames 11 месяцев назад
Sure! They go around the back of your thigh to help keep the haidate from flopping around while walking or running.

@@SamuraiJames sorry, I meant the holes in the front
@SamuraiJames
@SamuraiJames 11 месяцев назад
Do you mean the slit on each side at the front of the thigh? If so, those can be for a riding crop historically, or you can pass the "belt" strap of the haidate through them to help hold it up in front of you don't have the lace to tie around your shoulder / neck.
