A long overdue full review of my custom taisho armor from Iron Mountain Armory. Since it was so lengthy I broke it into three separate parts. This is part three, the mempo and the iconic samurai helmet, the kabuto.

Since you seem to be an experienced buyer could you answer a question? I've ordered a suit via the website and they've been a bit slow responding after i recieved the mockup picture. I know they say on their website that they are a small family business but it is a bit annoying that we cant get the mockup details done so that the armorers themselves can get started :)

Which part are you waiting on? Changes to the mockup? I haven't ordered anything with a mockup yet except when I send it myself.

I ordered my suit with blue and yellow/gold lasing and while waiting for the mockup picture i found a picture of an armor exhibition where there was a suit that had blue and yellow lasing. So after recieving the mockup(made on a computer so they said the colors are a little inaccurate of how they would look in real life) i sent them a picture of the suit i found and asked if they could guess which of their color options would look most like that picture.(Since they have like 3 shades of blue and yellow/gold to choose from) Maybe i am just excited/impatient but my question is is normal that it can go days without a reply?@@SamuraiJames

Sounds like excitement to me! Yes, sometimes it can take a few days for a response since they are a small company and have many customers. For the colors and computers part, let's call the blues as "light blue", "regular blue", and "dark blue". Take a look at them on your computer. Then take a look on your phone and put it next to your monitor. Change the display settings on your monitor from "standard" to "movie" to "game" to... whatever others. Adjust the contrast. Adjust the brightness. See how the lacing colors of the same picture on the same website change a bit? That's why there is no guarantee that "regular blue" will look EXACTLY like it does on your screen(s). Even the lighting on the lacing in the picture compared to lighting in your home compared to natural sunlight can shift the way we see the color(s). But you will know for sure that light blue is lighter than regular blue, and dark blue is darker than regular blue too. If you have the budget for it, you could order a piece of each color to decide which ones you want. It is under "DIY" and then "Odoshi-ge". Then you can see them in hand to decide, and you also have a bit on hand in case you need to make small repairs or alterations to the suit (such as using it for lacing the haidate over your shoulder). I'm not sure if shipping cost and time would be practical for that since you already ordered.

@@SamuraiJames Thank you for taking your time to reply to a random youtube comment :) Your idea of ordering the different colors of cloth is a good idea if i am going to make more purchaces in the future. I am mostly buying my armor as an ornamental piece in my house and i bought a gashira quality armor. I see that this suit you are showing here is of taisho quality. Do you feel the extra money cost between a gashira and taisho is worth it quality wise?

You're welcome, happy to engage with viewers when time permits. As an ornamental piece I think the gashira class is fine. The extras of the Taisho class might be worth it if you want the brocade instead of cotton, or the Taisho class lacing if you have a lot on your suit. One of the draws for me is the hand shaped plates being more historically accurate and since one of my goals is something to wear close to what it was back then, it was worth the extra cost to me. That's a personal choice we all make for ourselves and our situations.
