Samurai Reincarnation (1981) Classic Samurai Movie Review

People would be aware how much work it took these filmmakers and actors to create these masterpieces back in the day.

Excellent samurai movie review on Samurai Reincarnation directed by Japanese filmmaker Kinji Fukusaku I really enjoyed the concept of this movie and Sonny Chiba was terrific as Jubei Yagyu.

Aha you reviewed it! Excellent! Yagyu Jubei was a favorite role of Chiba's, he played it in two films and two tv shows. This movie, it's source book, and the additional works by it's author Yamada were the inspiration for the hit anime movie NINJA SCROLL. Quentin Tarantino clearly was also a fan of it since he lifted, almost verbatim, the Swordsmith's line about cutting down God with his special sword for KILL BILL vol.1.

The confrontation scene between Chiba and Wakayama in the burning castle is filmed not with special effects but on a truly burning set. the scene was filmed on a real burning set, not on a special effects set. It is unthinkable today.

I own old Tokyo Shock dvd I think I watch it almost 20 years ago and I only remember the fight in burning building, now waiting Eureka release. If anyone like this you will like other Chiba samurai fantasy movies from 80 my favorite´s are Ninja Wars, Shogun´s ninja and Legend of the Eight Samurai back of dvd case it says: "The Star Wars of Samurai Films" all of them are great fun and if you want something serious and great you should watch The Sea Is Watching.

One of my favorite "turn your brain off and have fun" movies. I remember seeing it after watching the (not really, but advertised as) sequal to Ninja Scroll called Ninja Resurrection.

Have you seen Samurai Sensei (2018)? That one's a real sleeper, you should review that one. Watched it earlier today, it was great. It's about a Samurai that time travels 150 years into the future long story short.

Its time for a samurai revival!! Younger gens are ready!

Thanks for this great review. I stumbled on it in a Video Store in the early 90s and when the store closed, I never found it again. I was always intrigued by the storys premise and the atmosphere. Very much horror ambience. The production design and the battles blew me away. I have seen the other film version and it simply didn't work for me. Just last night I was thinking, "man, I wish I could find it again." And then I found your review of it. Now that I have a 4K Region Free Blue-ray player, I'll have to order it. Thanks again.

This film was a surprise when I got the box set. I would say the last 20 mins are amazing. I just saw Sanada in "Royal Warriors" and didn't know it was him. He was great in this film. Chiba as Yagyu prefect casting!!!

This was not the last movie version of Yamada's novel. In 1996 a two part direct to video film titled REBORN FROM HELL: SAMURAI ARMAGEDDON was released, with it's second half titled REBORN FROM HELL: JUBEI'S REVENGE. It starred Hiroyuki Watanabe as Jubei, Kôtarô Yoshida as Shiro, and Hiroshi Miyauchi as Miyamoto Musashi. This was actually the first visual version of the story I watched and it looked shockingly cheap. Clearly it was filmed on sets and with actors who normally came from Japanese tv shows. And the director of it, one Kazumasa Shirai, apparently never worked again cause his IMDB page literally only lists these two films on it. I don't recommend it unless you want to see all the film versions of Yamada's novel. In 2003 a third movie version of the novel was made, this time titled SAMURAI RESURRECTION. It was directed by Hideyuki Hirayama, who 7 years later would direct SWORD OF DESPERATION, and starred Koichi Sato (from WHEN THE LAST SWORD IS DRAWN) as Jubei, Yosuke Kubozuka as Shiro, and Kyōzō Nagatsuka as Musashi. This is the one version I have not had a chance to see but given the talent involved both in front of and behind the camera on this, I suspect it's the next version you will seek out.
