San Diego Cactus and Succulent Show Pt. 1 (6/5/10) 

I am a succulent enthusiast and have a quite a few planed in bed outside my house in S. Louisiana. We here enjoy a subtropical climate that has more than average rainfall. The winters are mild and pracitically frost-free. All but the very most tender can survive outside in the ground, provided that there is adequate DRAINAGE. This is so important in our somewhat rainy climate. I've lost a few d/t inadequate drainage; must remain DRY b/t rains. What fun it is to grow these things in the ground.

Exceptional collection! Even the pottery is very fine.

It depends on the succulent. Some can survive in full sun. The ones I tend to collect grow better in partial shade so I have a screen to protect them from direct sunlight. I live in a desert climate so humidity isn't such a factor as long as they get the watering they need. The only thing I really have to worry about is the cold. In the winter, I have to bring some of them inside my house because on really chilly nights, the frost will damage them.

My niece started with 3 plants that only cost several dollars each. She's up over a dozen now. Some of those grew from leaves she found on the ground at our local nursery. Anyway, good luck!

They seemed to be doing fine in their containers. You don't want too big a pot because it can retain too much water. On the other hand, you don't want them too small either. I guess the enthusiasts found what worked for them. I do know that some of these were repotted just for the show. It'd be kind of interesting to see what those normally grew in.

these plants are spectacular and versitile i love them beauty and strength! and i love the large amount of varieties exposed here i want to start a collection 16 and into botany *epic* but i love them all the same!!

I do have a Baynesia lophophora that I got there. :) As far as the genus though, I highly doubt they'd allow that. I think I read that they're illegal to grow, so showing it would kind of give it away. Haha.

ps: The small size of some of those pot's is alarming considering the huge size of some of these plant's. Arent they worried about root expansion? Roots need space to expand. The bigger the pot the better!
