Geral McBoing Boing was based on a story by Dr. Seuss and the animation was done by UPA Studios. UPA also did the old Mr. Magoo cartoons and Gerald became their mascot in a sense. UPA studios also did the first horror animated short by adapting Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart.

What a fun day of claymation memories for me by watching your visit at the museum, Jacob.💕 I attended Gumby's 40th birthday party at an art gallery in LA where I not only got to speak for a time with Art Clokey; but he asked me to help him blow out the candles on Gumby's cake. A day I hold dearly in my heart. As to Mr Bill .....I made a Mr Bill costume and won the costume contest at my school in 7th grade. I got so much candy that year too!!.😁

San Diego Comic Con is absolutely on my bucket list. I've been to various sci fi and comic con but San Diego is the biggest. I had heard it described as a three day long party with a science fiction/fantasy theme, so I was just looking forward to it. I'm guessing you have a bit of social anxiety. Just don't sweat it. Gerald McBoing-Boing couldn't talk but he would make sounds instead. He could sound like a train or an animal or basically anything else and that is how he would communicate. Originally created in the 1950s but there was a tv cartoon series in 1956 and another in 2005 that was made for young children. Before Gumby there was George Pal who made a lot of 3d characters cartoons. Of course we can go back to the 3d animated King Kong who probably inspired them all.

Stop motion is time consuming, but I still feel like good old animation still takes longer frame by frame…
@AvengerII
@AvengerII Год назад
You know -- I used to think that but I'm not so sure. Sure, computers CAN be used to recheck footage more easily and make stop motion sooner but you still have to build and paint both the sets and characters for stop motion... as well as computer set-up and measuring to see what your next movement should be! That is at least as tedious as hand-drawn animation. With hand-drawn animation, you can overlay sheets of registrated paper to check your work OR do this in layers in a computer program! You can't really overlay more than a few frames (if possible) with captured still for stop motion. They still use mini-measuring tools to check where they should move (and how far) limbs of puppets. I would also maintain it's more time-consuming to build things (hammer, nails, and whatever other hardware you use) for stop motion than even hand-drawing traditionally or with digital tools (animation and photo-editing software). There are people who can still draw decent characters and backgrounds faster than anyone can saw and nail sets together. It was estimated by someone else that digital ink and paint sped up some traditional animation jobs as much as 500-600% minimum because you no longer had to wait for paint and ink to dry! Even with good drying tools (heat gun or lamp) it may take upwards of at least half a day for a paint-loaded cel to dry enough to be photographed. Models sprayed with an airbrush take less time to dry to the touch (heat gun or not; most modelers doing contract work use heat tools to accelerate the paint drying and drive out the moisture in the paint) because the paint is misted on in thinner layers than you can manage with any quill pen or paint brush! One advantage of both polygon-based animation and stop motion is once you have your "master puppets" built, you don't have to constantly rebuild them. With hand-drawn animation, you're stuck with redrawing and distorting the character to get decent-quality animation but there are benefits to redrawing characters. It's very difficult to "stretch and squash" puppets without building a new puppet constantly and they're still working on emulating things that were routinely with hose and tube, stretch and squash animation in CG animation. The best hand-drawn animation still looks smoother and more "lifelike" than the best poly and stop motion animation.

I have to admit I saw in the breakfast scene with the TV and cereal there was a milk carton from Dillions!!! Dillions started in my hometown, they sold to Kroger many years ago. But I wonder how that carton got to San Diego and in that display crazy. Dillions were mostly in Kansas and Missouri. I don't think this was open yet when I was there in 21. But definitely want to go back. You should go and do the trolly tours and it takes you to the dole banana factory right next to the Hilton Bayfront. Did they have any more Harryhausen besides "The Tortoise and the Hare?" Any Willis O'Brien? Most stop motion animators were inspired by them, including Henry Selick who did NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. I used to talk to Art Clokey online in his later years. Super glad you made it to the Comic-Con museum. It is a little on the smaller side at the moment. I posted some indoor San Diego ideas in yesterday's blog way late. Here are some ideas that I haven't seen others recommend yet: 1. Geisel Library at UCSD (has Dr. Seuss' archives and exhibits) 2. The shops of the Convoy District - not a mall, just an area with cool shops (some really great pop culture stores and amazing Asian cuisine) 3. National Geographic's Beyond King Tut exhibit at the Del Mar Fairgrounds 4. Jurassic World: The Exhibition in Mission Valley Food: 1. Kansas City BBQ (down in the Marina where you were in this vlog) - where they filmed Top Gun bar scenes 2. Liberty Public Market in Liberty Square (tons of great local vendors and food) 3. The oldest still functioning Jack In The Box (San Diego's hometown fast food) 4104 Mission Boulevard in Pacific Beach (the first was on 63rd and El Cajon is long gone) 4. Tacos El Gordo - Super popular taco chain in San Diego and Vegas only 5. Hodad's in Pacific Beach (legendary local burgers) 6. High Pies in Oceanside (the repurposed house from the original Top Gun) - a bit of a drive but a great photo op Hope you are having a great time in this wonderful city and my home!
