Don't be surprised about the Padres pitching, from Opening Day on, this season was and is always going to be a tightrope. Apparently what you see on the major league team is pretty much what this year's team is going to ride as far as possible because there doesn't beeem to be any minor league talent that's close enough to promote. Estrada seems to be the exception and he's on the major league active roster now. He seems to have taken Vasquez ' spot for now. But the depth problems aren't limited to relievers, there doesn't seem to be anyone but Vasquez to fill in while both Darvish and Musgrove are on the IL. At the beginning of the season I predicted this depth problem primarily because not one member if this year's rotation pitched a full season last year so the odds were very long on any if the starters could pitch an entire season this year and the current problems won't be the end, there will be other visits to the IL and other reasons we can't predict.

Remember, Kolek can't be sent diwn, he's a Rule 5. Or, offer Kolek back to seattle and maybe send him down.

yes. my guess would be he’s the casualty for mazur’s promotion. kolek would be DFA’d. then he’d be exposed to waivers or the team would try to work out a trade for him. in either of these cases, the acquiring club would still be subject to his R5 status. the other option would be to return him to seattle … whether seattle accept him back or they refuse (meaning he would stay part of the SD organization), he would be off the 40-man roster and then he could be sent to the minors

It's so dumb that him being a rule 5 guy is the only reason why he's still on the team. We're trying to win now, not rebuilding. I don't understand what the Padres see in Kolek. Send him packing. We have better options in AAA. He's expendable, and he's done so bad that he might just end up in our farm system.

@@timowns2 and that’s the entire point. if SD was a rebuilding team, they could justify keeping him on the active roster the entire season … bc after the season he would lose R5 status and then SD would be able to option him up and down between the minors no problem. however SD are in the middle of a wild card race and kolek’s lack of production is not worth saving an active roster spot for him the entire season. his spot would be better off going to somebody who can be optioned. his role of mop-up guy can easily be replaced with a guy who has minor league options. also kolek’s ERA is at 7 or 8 or something like that. and yes ur right. if SD were to DFA him, and then he clears waivers and seattle refuse to take him back, then SD could send him down to the minors without him occupying a 40-man roster spot the team could also send musgrove or bogaerts to the 60-day IL to clear up a roster spot. however, soon they might need kolek’s roster spot and they will soon need to answer whether keeping him the entire year and his potential for future years would justify keeping him this year.
