….even though SD is technically located in california. when people say “california”, they don’t usually think about SD, they just think about places like SF or LA (and possibly sacramento). but SD really is located in california. thats it
NM AT you’re so dumb, obviously I was joking when I said uncultured swine. And you missed the point, I’m talking about cities, not the streets of cities. Just chill, I bet you moved to the us and wasn’t born here
Native San Diegan here. Not including the obvious like The SD Zoo and other family parks, or downtown highlights, here is my own list of places to see includes: 1.Balboa Park. Right near downtown, amazing World's Fair architecture, promenades, Botanical Buildings, performers, fountains, Japanese gardens, arts and crafts, museums...it kind of has it all for couples and families. 2.La Jolla/Bird Rock. About as fancy as San Diego gets, but still laid back. Walk along the cove and watch the seals. It is called The Jewel of San Diego for a reason 3.Mission Beach/Pacific Beach. Where the young people party. One of the best beaches in the county. Great surfing and people watching on the boardwalk. Lots of bars. Best place for 4th of July (take an Uber, there will be no parking). 4.Ocean Beach. The old soul of San Diego. Reminds me most of old-school San Diego. More bohemian. A little more gritty, but tons of character and the best pier in town. Go have some oyster shooters and fish tacos at South Beach Bar & Grill. Doesn't get more SD than that. 5.Torrey Pines State Park. Probably the prettiest spot for a hike because it is right next to the ocean. The cliffs are surreal looking from below. Amazing little hiking trails that go down to the beach. Quite a workout going up. Afterwards you can grab a really decent burger at the clubhouse restaurant at Torrey Pines Lodge. 6.Coronado Island. You have to see Coronado if you come to SD. The views across the bay of the city or the peninsula are incredible. The old estates on this island are really something to see. The Hotel Del is a true national landmark. Have a buffet brunch facing the sea. The food is nothing special, but it is worth every penny just being there. Coronado also probably has the best beach in the county. It is huge and has gold flecks in the sand. Very family friendly. 7.Cabrillo Monument. On a clear day you HAVE to drive up to this historical site. The museum and the lighthouse are interesting, but you really come up for the view of downtown and the bay. It is truly stunning. 8.Kate Sessions Park/Mt Soledad. The park is my go to spot for setting up an umbrella and having a picnic. The view of Pacific Beach below is panoramic and beautiful. Lots of grass for the kids or dogs to run around on. There are also often free musical acts playing there. Go further up the hill and you will find a war memorial cross on Mt Soledad. While paying your respects you can really get a true 360 degree view of the area. Although there is definitely a night life in San Diego, it really is a daytime town. The weather is so awesome you may as well take full advantage of it. Finish your day off by having a Mai Tai at Bali Hai on Shelter Island. More amazing views across the bay and some of the best/strongest drinks in town.
Botanical Gardens at Balboa Park is shuttered for renovations that never seem to happen. Starlight Theater also totally shuttered, stands in disrepair. And stay off the trails without some company as there is a homeless encampment around every bend
Liberty Public Market is a fun place to spend an afternoon or evening. The food is great there but there is other great food around the place. Con Pane makes great fresh bread. Slater's 50/50 makes burgers to die for and has over 100 beers on tap. Stone Brewery has a location. There is several nice parks with playgrounds for children. Corvette Diner if you want to have a 50's diner experience, it is a San Diego institution. They even have an upscale movie theater, complete with restaurant, bar and at seat service during the movie. I could go on and on.

For me San Diego is the city that offers the very best of SoCal. Somehow everything looks and feels better, brighter, and more pleasurable in San Diego. I absolutely love everything about the city; from the Balboa Park/San Diego Zoo, to the Gaslamp Quarter, to the shopping scene, to the incomparable La Jolla, to the magnificent beaches, to Coronado, and everything in between. San Diego is a magical place that makes you feel great about being alive and celebrating life. Loved your presentation. 👍🏻👏🏻
I absolutely feel the same way! I’m moving back later this year after two years away (in Japan!) and I couldn’t be more excited if I was moving to Disneyland. It’s magical.
The 805 south can usually get very heavy with traffic around 3pm-8pm. the 805 connects from the 5 if you are coming into El Cajon, Spring Valley, and La Mesa.
Masterful presentation of a superficial slice of San Diego. I would add a couple of strong toppings to the slice. Chris, maybe you and your viewers are too la dee da to be caught dead riding a bus, but I really like the bus service in San Diego, and it's cheap. There is good bus service from the airport to downtown, and I always take the bus to Coronado and other areas. Of course busses may expose tourists to a side of San Diego that isn't so pretty, but if one wants to experience the socially authentic and challenged part of San Diego -- and why not? -- take the bus. Mingle with the working people. Once I was taking the bus from Coronado to San Diego to go to the baseball game, and one bus passenger led the packed bus in singing Take Me Out To The Ball Game. It started slow, but he got all of us singing. I've also heard great open conversations on the bus, like the man who talked about his marriage and said he'd been married 23 years and said, "Oh we're just starting." How beautiful. Get your asses on the busses people for some shots of reality. For another topping, try the cigar lounges, they are awesome. Also, check Yelp for great pizza and Mexican food.
Hah! I'm glad you had a good experience on the bus! It just doesn't really go the routes that I seem to want to go... but I'm glad to hear you had a positive experience on it! And yes... this is absolutely the "tourist" slice of San Diego.
You’re wrong about public transit not running to the airport. The 992 bus will take you to downtown every 15 minutes. If you have time and the patience, I recommend people checking transit routes on Google maps.
Yellow Productions ...just take the trolley to Santa Fe Depot or America Plaza, then hop on the 992 right there on Kettner & Broadway Give yourself enough time and it’s VERY EASY 👌
Update 2022, from Old Town Transit Station, you can park free and take the Flyer free straight to the airport. The drivers are aggressive, but you get there.
San Diego is like 1000 better than LA. its cleaner, way less ghetto areas, cleaner beaches, amazing views and downtown area, greener, nicer people, its just really expensive to live there!
Just returned form SD. Its so beautiful, we stayed at the Bahia Resort. The amenities were awesome, free boat rides, activities for the kids and it was right on the water/beach. We were there for 4 days/5 nights wish we had more time. I cannot wait to return.
Nice to know about the airport so close to the high buildings! I am from Hong Kong, our old airport Kai Tak was also notorious for the same reason. I definitely would sit on the left side when I fly into SD airport
Did it - was disappointed when my flight time changed from a daytime arrival to a night time arrival as I wanted to photograph it, however a magnificent sight.
13:45 a nice Ferrari California on the left. Coming from where I live, Yukon Canada (middle of nowhere) seeing the exotic cars is always a fun experience when traveling South.
What authentic food do you recommend in Tijuana? San Diego taco shop food is unique, greasy and delicious. Rolled tacos with guac, carne asada burritos and fish tacos.
@Dawn Worth I used to know about carne asada chips in '96. I was a vegetarian at the time so I'd get it without the meat. I don't know if they did the fries back then, though.
let me suggest you some restaurants in San Diego: - Authentic Hawaiian Poke (Hawaiian Grindz) at "it's raw poke shop" on Newport Ave (Ocean Beach). (I go to Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui regularly, this one is up there with them) and the owner is from Mililani in Oahu. - $5.00 All you can eat Tacos on every Tuesday (with a purchase of a drink) at the "American Junkie" on 5th Ave (Gaslamp). - great cheap tacos with housemate tortillas at "Micho's" (inside the bar called Atomic) on 5th Ave (Gaslamp). - great cheap tacos at "Tacos Mimi" on Cass st (Pacific Beach). cheap and good, make sure you order side of fries too. - "Dos Brasas" on San Diego Ave (Old Town), try their Menudo (tripe soup) and lots of things.
Hey! Thank you for explaining in detail what to do, where to eat & stay while in San Diego. I look forward to visiting this city next month. Your video helped alot :)
My favorite Mexican place for carnitas burritos was Los cuarantos millipas. Spelling? Out in national city right by the bridge. Its been several years since I left but I really miss it there. And best gambling was Viejas. The others were tighter then you know what.
Wish these videos were available before our family trip in 2018. So far I've been on point with with your suggestions (we did almost everything you've mentioned). This series is great and will be subscribing for more! My wife and kids (and my self included) cannot wait until our next trip back-one of favorite vacations.
No need to show the polluted water sign in Imperial Beach, as you know that only happens after heavy rains, and not ONLY in Imperial Beach, but at all of our beaches due to the run off from the San Diego River. In addition, few tourists make it to the hidden gem of Imperial Beach, as it's too far from the main attractions of San Diego proper. All cities have their less desirable elements, and to me, the East Village is a lot worse than the occasionally polluted beaches, yet you failed to tell viewers to steer clear of that area.
I wish this video was posted before we went to San Diego in May of 2016. We would love to visit again or move there some day. We stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt and a Holiday Inn in Old Town. Visited the San Diego Zoo, Midway Museum, Air And Space Museum, Coronado Beach, La Jolla Shores, Petco Park, Seaport Village, and many other places. It is a great city with so many things to do that we would never have enough time to explore everything. Thanks for the Great Video!
Yo this is awesome! I was just in San Diego during March for spring break. We had an amazing time there and want to go back many times. The weather was beautiful in SD and we really enjoyed the Ofo/ Lime bikes and scooters! Keep up the great work Chris!!
Great recap - I'm born and raised in SD. A little-known fun fact of Coronado beach is the sand dunes near the sidewalk north of the Hotel Del are shaped to spell out Coronado. The dunes were going to spell out Coronado Beach but they only did the B of beach. Do a Google aerial search to see it.
"Tijuana" is not pronounced "Ti-a-juana". Of course what can one expect from someone who says "off-ten" instead of "off-en"? How does he pronounce "soften'?
I'm born and raised in San Diego, browsing videos to see if I can find things even I haven't done before, and I do think a lot of your recommendations are great for the first time visitor. BUT I have to correct you on Stone Brewery. Its headquarters are in Escondido, which includes beautiful interior and exterior dining spaces plus a gift shop . The main location is not in Liberty Station, and I feel it would be a better suggestion to visit the Escondido location in conjunction with spending the day at the Safari Park. That location is superior by far. Also, sorry but you gotta get spaghetti factory off here. That's not a San Diego thing. That's like suggesting Applebees. If you like that, fine, but an actual foodie would find it to be a HUGE disappointment. Perhaps it's a plug? Overall good suggestions on months to travel, and nothing too local has been revealed. We have to keep some secrets!
My favorite month is September... still good weather to visit the beach... water is still warm. October gets a bit cooler, ocean water is too cold to go in. It's still a fine month to visit... but September is the best in my opinion :)
You could pick up the compass pass (for bus/trolley) at the airport for $5 a day anywhere in the city all you want for $5 , don't worry about traffic or parking... pass is near the information centers at the airport... The information about the trolley is not that correct in the video! He even shows a map of how to get to the nearest trolley from the airport the airport provides a free shuttle to the nearest trolley (green)! Or with your compass pass that you picked up at the airport you could take the 992 bus to the base station of all the trolleys!!!
Thanks for the tips on the compass pass! I just really think it's lame the trolley doesn't stop directly at the airport and that you have to take a shuttle or bus to the trolley. It's be so much better if the trolley actually went to the airport
i hope i have a great excuse to go to la jolla next year in september since I was born in la jolla (living in kansas city though but it’s whatever). I love the videos (taking time out of my day to devote time to watching videos instead of watching anime amd developing iOS jailbreak apps amd software. Your videos are epic and awesome and travelling can definitely a fun experience!)
Good video. I would have added that if you just walk a few blocks out of gaslamp you can get great food for more reasonable prices. Places around Market and 9th or further into east village for example. Also shout out to petco park which is a very nice baseball stadium, and the padres are lousy so great tickets for $25 are easy to find. Also, Hodad's is better than In n out :)
St. Vincent de Paul! Helping keep the downtown area smelling like crack cocaine and piss since the 80s. I lived there(Linda Vista) for 3 of the longest years of my life. The weather rules, but that's about all it has going for it. It gets old really fast.
"definitely going to need a car in sd." -- It depends on what you want to see and do. If you're in town for 5 days, you might only need a car for 2 of them. The trolley will serve you well for the rest of your visit.
I think North Park and South Park aren't on the main tourist track.. they aren't bad places.. but not in the same category as the Gaslamp and La Jolla where everybody goes
Going to San Diego in 2 weeks, I'm really excited and looking forward to seeing the city and the nice weather for 13 days 👍🙂🇩🇰 Thanks for your video inspiration
Just booked a January San Diego trip with my 11 year old. Will be watching all of your videos on the area. We are staying at Hotel Del Coronado thanks to Hilton free night certificates
