It's important to plan ahead for this busy iconic San Francisco attraction. This video helps you to enjoy the cable car experience and all the beautiful scenic San Francisco places: Fishermans wharf, Lombard Street, China Town, Union Square, Embarcadero, Ferry Building, Nob hill and so much more.
There are 3 routes:
(1) The Powell - Hyde route to fisherman wharf (most popular)
(2) The Powell - Mason route to fisherman wharf
(3) The California Route to Nob Hill and Polk Street
The Hyde and Mason routes share the turn around at Market and Powell which is 2 blocks south of Union Square. The cable cars lines alternate loading. You stand in line and can wait at the front of the line if you prefer to take to the other location or if you want to wait for a front or running board position. Its an easy walk through fisherman's wharf to get between the Hyde and Masson fisherman wharf turn arounds. Only the Hyde and Powell locations have ticket booths but you can pay cash (in small bills) on the cable car or use the muni app. SFMTA.com/MuniMobile
The cable car museum is at 1201 Mason at Washington and Mason streets. The hyde and mason lines coming away from fisherman wharf both pass by the museum on their way to Union Square. Its about a 15 minute walk from the museum to Union Square.
To have the most fun talk with the cable car brake man or grip man and waive to people as you pass by. Most of the people on the cable cars are tourist so live it up.
