My birthplace San Francisco. Family video filmed circa 1969. We lived on Wawona St in Sunset District and I went to Ulloa School. A fond memory of my dad, mom, and grandma who are in heaven... I love❤️ San Francisco!
Music: "Newborn" from Apple iMovie audio library.

Looking back at the old san Francisco was amazing and those glory days are gone for good now. I love the old san Francisco culture where everyone was happy and less crimes.

Wow,and now I am thinking about the good old days... we moved to San Francisco in the late '60s, from Michigan after the long hot summer of 1967.. beautiful city strange people, and some good people as well of course, and a beautiful place to explore and enjoy.. went to Everett Junior High School, Burbank Junior High School, Woodrow Wilson High School, and then we moved again, to Vallejo California.. those were the days! We used to love the Playland by the beach, and Golden Gate Park was clean and safe at that time.. parking was never a problem in the city, and rent was very reasonable.. my first apartment two bedrooms on second floor of an apartment building, and I paid $350 per month in the'70s.. those were the days

'77 found a one bedroom at 22nd and Clement, near the little movie theater and across from Yet Wah. $175 a month. I said it's nice but a little pricey for me so the sweet old Russian landlady threw in the garage space for no extra charge. Could you even find a garage for that now let alone an apartment? Walked a block up to California and got the 1X which got me to Montgomery in 20 minutes or so.

the federal minimum wage was raised to in 1969 $ 1.60 an hour, and remained at that rate until 1974. that works out to a bit over $177 a month before taxes. $350. a month was not cheap for those accomodations.
@mikegalvin9801
@mikegalvin9801 Год назад
@@suppylarue220 He said 70s not 69 but even at 69 level one dollar is 8 today by Google. That makes 350 about 2800 today. Try finding a two bedroom in a decent neighborhood for anything like that today. Besides minimum wage was for teenagers who were not looking to rent 2 bedrooms all by themselves. My one-bedroom was 175 in 77. That's maybe 900 today which was affordable for middle class single then and wouldn't get you a room in a crack house (if those still exist) today let alone a one bedroom in the Richmond District with a garage space. There were cheaper places available for truly low income people. But let's not quibble, Happy New Year.

I grew up in the bay area in the 50's and 60's. Born in Berkeley, raised in San Jose and Santa Clara. We went to San Francisco at least once a month. FISHERMAN'S WHARF, THE EMPORIUM, MARKET STREET, THE PLAYLAND, THE ZOO, THE JAPANESE GARDENS, THE CLIFF HOUSE. So many fond memories. I even studied music and voice in San Francisco. Bill Stoker was my vocal coach(Jonny Mathis's vocal coach). So many of those places are now gone, like the people connected to those memories. I sure love San Francisco ! I always will........💙

What a lovely old family film! I am a San Francisco native, born in 1950, who lived in the Sunset and North Beach neighborhoods mostly. Lowell class of Spring '68. That said, the sixties and early seventies were very tumultuous times, not all peaceful as some seem to think. The Viet Nam War, Civil Rights movement, and what was generally percieved then as a huge crime wave (due in part to the sheer number of male boomers coming of age) were but a few issues back then. Still, it was a wonderful time to be young in San Francisco.

Very sweet footage. Thank you for sharing. I couldn't help but think about what was going on only 1/2 mile or so away at that time in the Haight Ashbury. I was born at Kaiser Hospital in '68 after my parents moved from the Panhandle to northern Marin. My dad was still working in the City, commuting, and couldn't resist all the excitement going on in the Haight. He soon "tuned in, turned on, and dropped out." quitting his job and leaving my mom and me a bit stranded in the then boonies of Novato. I spent my childhood going back and forth between parents and between two very different worlds. Yours was the kind of neighborhood I used to drive by and wish I lived in--a sort of happy medium. Lucky you for having lived what looks to have been such a sweet childhood. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful footage.

This is so sad, it is like that Dali's melting clock painting. We just watch our time melt away and fade away. I lived on Riveria/42nd ave from 2007 to 2020. My child grew up in the hood and Ulloa Sunset Playground was our go-to playground. Unfortunately, Lowell high was not a desirable high school for my child. We moved out to Nevada for that famous gifted talent kid school. He went on to Stanford. It is so hard for me to move out of San Francisco. I was a chinatown kid then moved to Mission district, then Holloway by SFSU, then Sunset, for a total of 37 years!!!!

(35th between Lincoln and Irving.) My Sweetheart lived on 41st between Lawton and Moraga. It's just not the same, although our home looks lovely still. Not all of them fared well. It seems that below the Blvd, many of the houses are not maintained well. Sad.

My dad was a longshorman in Stockton for 36 years but often him and groups of his colleagues were sent to SF, Willmington, Long Beach and other places to work. On his days off he would pack all his kids into the car and we would day-trip to SF and see the sights and the SF Port and ship loading docks. It was in the late 60's as in this video. Those days with dad were pure gold. Driving around, munching on hotdogs, cheese sandwiches, cucumbers with salt, watermelon 🍉. I remember that beautiful SF cool weather and incredible sunshine. Dad would do a double over the GG bridge just so we could see the pacific ocean below and large patches of fog. I think we had a green vw wagon. It was all so glorious. Simple pleasures. Miss you, dad....

The scenes of your street and how automobile free are amazing. Google that same street today and it is choked with autos because of the housing costs and all the extra people that have to live there. What stood out the most was how happy your mother looked. And then I couldn't help it - I laughed when your bicycle fell over. Don't hurt me! 😁

I enjoyed watching your video of such a beautiful city. Yes sadly your family has passed now, as has mine. I was only 19 the first time I ever went to San Francisco Aug 8, 1969. I was new in the Air Force and was travelling from the East Coast to Japan, by way of Travis AFB in Fairfield, CA . I planned the trip so I would have 2 days in San Francisco before travelling to Travis AFB, for my flight to Yokota AB, Japan. I stayed in a rather dingy hotel by the bus station and was terrified, Thankfully people were very nice to me. I think they thought I was younger than 19 as I looked 15 lol. One person gave me a ticket to a ballgame, and other people showed me where the sights of the city were. One even offered to drive me all the way to Travis, but I said, I already had a bus ticket for that trip. It was such a beautiful city back then. The hills and viewpoints, the Bridges and all the shops and restaurants. Though different than where I grew up in Boston, it reminded me a little of Boston. A compact city on the water with people from all over the world. It must have been exciting growing up there. I have always had very fond memories of my 2 days in San Francisco in 1969. Yes Thank you for Sharing this wonderful part of your life.

Very cool. Thanks for posting. I'm in my 40's and as someone who hasn't been born around that time yet, I always like to watch movies from that era to see how everyone dressed, the kind of cars they drove, and the type of houses build. But I love watching homemade videos even better because it's obviously more authentic.

What a beautiful video. I grew up in the inner Sunset district in the mid 50's. Lived pretty much my entire life in the Sunset district before moving to Miami FL in 2001. San Francisco was such a beautiful city back in the day. It will always remain close to my heart. You have a wonderful family, and I recognize many of those places in your video. Thank you so much for sharing your life with us. It truly was a different generation back then!!! 👍
