We’re married, at least legally! Given that our wedding is overseas, it was important to seal the deal officially before we left. We made an appointment a San Francisco City Hall wedding to get our marriage license and perform our civil ceremony back to back.
Pro tip: Monday morning is a great time to do it since the place is empty.
Getting married at SF City Hall: The marriage license vs. civil ceremony thing has always been confusing. The marriage license appointment is typically the only thing a couple will do at city hall. Both parties need to show up and swear that their names are correct and that they’ve never been married before. Then, a properly ordained officiant at their wedding will perform the ceremony and sign the marriage certificate. In our case, we also had a civil ceremony at city hall where a commissioner married us, along with 41 other couples that day.
