I agree with you. Fortunately the director Francesca Zambello has done productions of many classic musicals for opera houses all over the world.

My favorite musical. The music is so wonderful. I always feel you should leave a musical humming a song. You leave this one humming a bunch of them.

Myles Garcia this was a regional production, and I think it's unfair to compare it to a New York one. Probably the best talent winds up in New York, but it doesn't mean this wasn't good. If you think this was bad, check out a college, or worse, a high school production (God bless 'em-- they gotta start somewhere!). You'll return thinking this was great!

Fabulous clip and way to short All you lovers and haters of this should acquire the 3-Cd set of John McGlinn's recording (no video) McGlinn put a lot of scholarship into Kern's show and the singing and orchestra conveys the spirit of this show as no other has done

Absolutely right, I've loved that recording since it was brand new. I've even had the privilege of meeting Maestro McGlinn and telling him so. We lost him way too early.

Good show, but what a pity that the baritone who played Ravenal was using amplification while the rest of the cast (all opera singers) didn't.

I don't think so. Patricia Racette has quite a following. I've seen her in very many operatic roles and was delighted to see her in this, but everyone to his own taste.

If you cast a Magnolia that old you risk giving off the Baby Jane vibe we see here The guy singing Old Man River was in desperate need of some whittling lessons coz whatever it is he's doing is just distracting

This production is an example of conductor/director butchery because 3 and a half hours of integral recording of the critical edition by EMI from 1988, was heavily cut to less the 150 mins. Just some examples to ilustrate this: The original ouverture was omitted and replaced with the the inferior one from 1946. The wedding scene was almost 50% trimmed, and much more in the same manner. The singers are heavily miscast Patricia Racette sounds as a cat in February while the role of Magnolia had to be transposed down so Heidi Klober can sing...

So glad to read this comment. I was seriously thinking about ordering the Blu-ray of this production. I'm a life-long fan of Show Boat, and I am second to none in my admiration for the fabulous and complete 1988 recording. I certainly won't buy this now! Once again many thanks!

Magnolia is suppose to be a young lady, and Julie is supposed to be sultry and sensual not overweight. I can't believe that there is a lack of talented people who would actually fit these roles in San Francisco.

+robert roberson I agree. I saw this from the last row of the orchestra, and I cannot believe how inappropriate and unattractive that Gaylord, Magnolia and Julie are. I remember that the actresses playing Julie and Magnolia were very strident, and, omigod, I was right! Glad I only paid $20 to see this show.

Where does it say Julie is supposed to be thin as a rail? She can have meat on her bones and still be sultry. In fact, I think it makes perfect sense for her character, seeing as she's supposed to be the "prima donna" of the midwest.

Great set and costumes.... Gaylords costume is FAR to big on him. Opera companies need to leave the production alone and just do a recital of the better songs. They REALLY destroy the warmth and homey nature that this musical brings to the audience. Too many divas vying for the spot light and it has become a competition rather than classic entertainment. Chalk one up for the amateurs.
