San Francisco may be known for its rolling hills, picturesque landmarks, and polarizing tech economy, but if you head out west, you’ll find that there’s so much more to the city.

Hey Joey, Peter here. Thank you for your sharing your knowledge and experience of The City. I grew up in the Richmond District. Born and raised. I used to walk from my family home, on Sundays, to have brunch at the Cliff House. My grandmother learned to swim at Sutro Baths. My mother and I both learned to Ice Skate there. The Zelinsky family who began the Mecanique collection were friends and neighbors. I watched the Cliff House burn, and it was arson. The Whitney family had been successful for many decades. By the mid 1960’s they were no longer wealthy and the costs of “Playland” and The Baths were no longer being met by the income produced. It was known that some who had exhibits at Sutro Baths should remove them before a certain date. These items were removed and thereby saved. I have so many similar “back stories”, albeit they are family history. Thanks again, Peter.

The Army sent me to live and study German in what is now The Presidio Landmark, so I got to know the Richmond well. Saturday morning runs along the cliffs to Sutro Baths and The Cliff House - watching the seals on their rock - became a favorite. Robin Williams gave video game advice to a fellow student hanging out at the 7-11 on Geary.

I always love the Richmond since it's often the calmest part of the City.

I was thrilled to see a video of the Clement St. shopping area and see that it is largely as I remember it. When I came as a young person in 1961 there was still a Russian bakery..,

Joey! As someone who loves the far western part of SF as much as you, this channel is absolute music to my ears. Please continue to put out these videos. There are so many cool topics to explore in this area: the Farallon Islands, the 1942 blimp mystery, all kinds of stuff involving golden gate park...

Also, Topsy’s Roost off of Great Highway during the 1920s is one of the strangest/least remembered businesses of the neighborhood

I was born in the mid 50's in the Inner Sunset district and went to Whitney's Playland at the Beach all the time. The great thing about Playland wasn't just the rides, but the great food places out there. There was a greek kabob places on the corner of the merry go round building. On the midway at great highway was the chicken range and the Hot House (great mexican enchiladas and tamales) and places like Yum Yum for salt water taffy and candied apples, plus there was a place on the corner of Balboa and the great highway side of the skating rink called Bull pup enchiladas and up above the Cliff House was a famous resturant called Louies. Its too bad the city didn't try and save Playland from the wrecking ball in 1972

Alas, Cliff House is now closed ( I think). My last trip to SF I stayed with friends in Outer Sunset. I did a bunch of exploring, but did not quite make it up to there. Next time it will be a priority. You really can't beat SF for just walking around and checking stuff out

"I live in Richmond" means the city of Richmond in Contra Costa County in the East Bay. "I live in _the_ Richmond" means the Richmond district in San Francisco.

Recently began binge-watching your videos. Looking seriously at going to college in SF, I currently live in LA. I recently visited and I absolutely loved it there. Even though much has changed, I feel like there’s such an appreciation for the past. Unfortunately, 90% of old LA is gone. Look up Bunker Hill, once a thriving community of Victorian houses in Downtown that was entirely removed and leveled in the name of “progress.” All that we are left with is a dead zone that no one lives in or visits.

I would've given anything to have visited Playland, even for just one day. I have a poster of it on my wall. What was your favorite attraction?

@@djmixnmagic The Arcade: SkeeBall, shooter games, etc., and it was roofed, so even in bad weather you could spend hours there. >Grew up in the Outer Sunset [32nd and Rivera] in the '50s and '60s. . Would like to see man_woman-on-the-street interviews: oldsters remember it as all-white and quiet, newbies will know it as majority Asian and thriving businesses

@@paddywhack9261I grew up on Lincoln Way & Funston in the mid 50's. The great thing also about Playland was all the good eating places there. The Greek kabob place adjacent to the merry go round building. The Pie Shop, The Chicken Range and Yum Yum and It's It on great highway, and of course the Hot House for those delicious Mexican enchiladas and tamales

Joey, you are the most knowledgeable and thorough host I have found. I moved to SF in 1961, left and returned over much of my life. BI do not need a visitor’s perspective. Appreciate all your work.

I remember a donut shop right next to the Balboa Theatre called The Sugar Bowl in the 60's and on the backside (38th Ave) of the Balboa Theatre building, there was a large painted mural of Playland & the Fun House & Diving Bell. Wonder if that's still there?

Alright Joey, settle the score. Geary Boulevard or Geary Street? Enlightening bar arguments have occured on this very topic (pre-Covid of course). Cheers from Golden Gate Heights (born in SF). 🍻
@JoeyYee
@JoeyYee 3 года назад
My gut wants to go with Boulevard, but my gut has also spoken the words “Geary Street” (because it’s faster to say) more times than I can count. So in conclusion... Boulevard if you’re classy. Street if you’re late.
