San Francisco Tsunami - March 11, 2011 - second to last wave/sloshing - Very small effect

Taken from the balcony at Ocean Beach's Cliff House. This demonstrates the effect the tsunami still has after crossing the Pacific Ocean. Yes, it seems small, but considering how it spread out over the Pacific ocean it is still a significant effect.

Can't believe I went to ocean beach to check this out back then and felt "disappointed". I guess I just couldn't imagine how devastating everything was on the other side of the ocean was. Now living in Japan, I feel terrible reflecting on this, especially after hearing all the stories of that day. It's kinda crazy to think this was over 10 years ago now.

@jurban1997 This is good documentation. The "wall of water" tsunami everyone expects to see is largely cinematic fiction. The fact that an earthquake over 5,000 miles away could cause the ocean to rise up like this, is awesome to contemplate. Thank you for keeping your camera running as long as you did, and for capturing this event in real time. I am plenty impressed. And, as baiNEKO alluded, we can be thankful the epicenter wasn't five miles away, or even five hundred . . .

You must have never seen the photos taken right before the 2004 Tsunami that hit Indo.

Your wording is strange. It seems you're actually suggesting documented tsunami videos from 2004 and 2011 are "largely cinematic fiction".

For those not familiar with this beach, the water NEVER goes out as far as it was here, and then for it to come in as far as it did as fast, that's Tsunami action. Tip for those filming, it's easier to watch when you're not constantly panning around. Focus on one spot.

Quiet now from Japan. When we have one outside in the ocean we will have over 50 feet wave and higher. Just a matter of time

So true. It has happened before in the Pacific north west. Now that scientists understand better what they are looking at they're like OMG. No way I would live on that coast

Actually I have a time machine. If you want to head back to retrieve those 10 minutes, you can book a flight. That will be $86,000,000 please. Cash only, in pennies. 😝

They just look like waves coming in on a high tide to me, seen worse in stormy weather.

It's the oscillating water levels that's different. The entire Pacific basin was sloshing back and forth from the earthquake, same as shaking a large tub of water......after the shaking stops, the water level will continue waxing and waning until it finally settles down. Some areas around the Indian ocean in the 2004 tsunami saw this ebb and flow go on for several hours.

When it traverses thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean it spreads out. It's more of a sloshing than a wave. 50 miles south in Santa Cruz the harbor concentrated the sloshing and damaged boats and docs.

tsunamis don't always have one big wave. sometimes they are a series of small waves generated by a big event. besides it's not the size that will get you it's under tow. they travel of great speed like that of a jet. you sometimes have five minutes to get away or fifteen. either way the safest place in a tsunami is above the oceans beach.

noom_nik It all really depends on the shore depths. I do believe one U.S. person did get swept out and drown .. on the west Coast. Also... a fair amount of boat * marina damage.
