For five years, Leonard Jackson lived in "The Jungle," a massive homeless encampment that was cleared out in 2014. Now, through a city program, he has housing and a paycheck. Still, there are more than 4,000 homeless people in San Jose.
By the way maybe you do know how it feels I don't know your life maybe you come from really hard times and by the way you are really really really pretty
You said it. It's expensive. I live in Kansas. The guy at the beginning was making $2500 per month and staying in a RV. Here you could get a decent place and pay all your utilities for under $1000 and there are plenty of jobs here. I don't understand why people who are able bodied stay there and live in poverty.
Carlos Morales wake up idiot. The votes dont matter. The elections are rigged. Pilousi and newsome related. They put each other in. They vote and make all the laws for their benefit only. If this is not crystal fucking clear... your so stupid blaming the people. The only ones wasting time are the voters who think a vote matters... going down punching ballots. You get the fucktard award of the day.
@@arewethereyet5675 If that's true... then why are some places thriving via policy in comparison to California. Cali liberal politicians say NO to building more housing in SF... meanwhile republicans want to build more highrises there so there's more surplus of homes which allow the rich to move into new places and it to trickle down openings and cheaper lower end housing... But no... keep voting for liberals who REFUSE to allow new home construction. It's a painful truth but you need to fucking break that old mindset and realize republicans=smallgov=moreconstruction... vs liberals=moregovwaste=lessconstruction
Omg this is down to supply and demand. Not enough houses to accommodate the demand. On top Government /State expensive regulations on home building. Stop blaming people who bought their homes, you would have done the same in in their position. If uou stop blaming individuals and looked into what has changed, then you'll see what the real problem is!
@chuck wood so blaming your Parent for making a fantastic investment that he'd be a fool to turn down. If you really feel that strongly then you'd turn down the finances that you'll benefit from one day. Or will you accept the inheritance from someone, who you believe caused the problem?
This is a multifaceted problem. Blame Prop 47, blame complicit policy makers, blame the Democrats...don't blame a free market. Mental health programs, drug treatment and jobs are needed. Imagine if California paid 4 billion to the homeless to clean up their own shit instead of building homeless shelters with 500k rooms.... CA might not have a manufactured crisis.
3:40 Finally, a homeless person who admits he was homeless because of his drug problem! And, says tearing down the homeless encampment actually save him & many others because they got help!
Pat d Guessing he’s managed to land a job at Apple Store too, pretty damn good achievement. (Btw, Apple stores are actually pretty hard to land a job at)
I have lived in South San Jose since January of 1971. A good friend of mine in the computer industry became homeless and I can tell you that the demographics of the homeless here in Silicon Valley are rather different than what you put forward. For example we find that 50% of the homeless are disabled or retired people on Social Security who cannot afford rent and are living in their vehicles. They don't want to be homeless they're not on drugs and unfortunately do not have the necessary financial wherewithal to leave the area and go somewhere else. We find that 20% of the homeless are as you indicate mentally challenged and or using drugs. The final 30% are working adults that have jobs, however they cannot afford rent and they are living in their vehicles.
Its cheeper to exterminate them according to the Democrats . Go read Agenda 21 and 23 they talk about homeless in there and how they will solve that issue .
I am living in my truck and its very very hard going to work and going to my truck to sleep and try to keep a smile on my face everyday for work and the customers
@@kriscurkovic9265 hope everything is going good for you now. I was lucky, I grew up in the 70's, where everything was affordable. Young people today have it much harder, the cost of everything has sky rocket, especially rent. Best wishes for you in the future.😀👍
Totally agreed. I was in and spot, rented a climate controlled storage unit and got a 24 hour gym membership. Washed clothes at laundry mat, saved up and got a new place
$2500/month. There are Airbnb rooms for $30-40/night just to get by. If that's too much, maybe another option is to get a gym membership just to groom/wash everyday. Starbucks for restrooms. Wish you luck.
It seems like there are those in our society who expect people, who have put a lot of effort into making a good life for themselves and their family, to support those who don't. They bring-up disabled people and mentally ill people as examples of those who need help and deserve our charity, but in truth, they are a small percentage of the homeless population. Most of the homeless just want to do things their own way which in most cases means throwing their garbage where they please, living where they please and paying no attention to the conventions which hold our society together. They show no respect for the public property yet they want you and I to pay for their food and their way of life and for politicians give them our money to do that. So who are the foolish?
Homeless have finally moved in down my street a year ago. Nothing is safe anymore cars, garages, even my own backyard at 3am I find these parasites. SJPD will not arrest nor vacate the camp, I spent 20 minutes on hold waiting for a dispatcher due to it not being a nonviolent crime. I have witnessed them looking over my neighbors gates to see what the want to rip off when it becomes night and you want me to feel sorry about these drug addicts and thiefs? No thank you I will be moving out of the state and you can keep giving these people support even though they are too lazy to help themselves. Don't get me wrong some do need the help but most are just looking for their next handout.
asdg asdf I would have moved out of there the moment I saw the first tent, but selling a home with trash at the end of the street is gonna make it a tough sell. I hope you have cameras installed for both protection and evidence, an alarm system and a large, vicious dog. After I was robbed, a cop told me to shoot to kill only if the perp was in the house. Otherwise, he/she can sue you because he/she was injured, as unbelievable as that sounds.
I sold my home in February (Blossom Hill area). In May 2018, it was appraised for 1,275M; looked at the neighbor's home down the street going for 975K, and put mine on the market for 100K less; sold in 2 months in the dead of Winter. I wanted out of San Jose that bad and got lucky. Homes aren't selling well there this year (2019), and the prices have dropped significantly. I hope you've found a place out-of-state you like, and got a decent price for your property; sure couldn't be worse than San Jose.
My school is on the same street. Hurts walking home and to school seeing so many homeless people, and the fact that there’s even more behind the school where Coyote creek is sucks more when you see them walking back and forth behind the gates while ur at the track. A sense of sadness and unsafeness passes all of us. It gets worse when you’re walking down the street on your way to Walmart. It’s unsafe to walk alone at this point it’s just tent after tent.

I'm from San Jose this is 100% true there used to be some woods weeds to cut through when I was a kid to go skateboarding and biking and it was full of homeless people so we had to stop using the area so sad to see those people living like that
When I drive by a homeless camp and see all the trash they disrespectfully leave. It makes it loud and clear they have no respect for themselves or the community that tries to assist them. Never give them a dime, for you are only throwing your money away.
Buy a van for a 500-1000 Take out the seats Put in a small twin side mattress If you want to make more room put in a small bed that take up only 60-70 % of the space and you can put plastics bin for your stuff. Or by a mobilehome for 2500-10000 And I promise it way more comfortable. But more expensive.
@@juanbeteta4219 Most places investigate RV's if they're parked in the city. A better idea is use a small enclosed trailer like most small businesses use, which is far more discreet, and with a little modification can be just as accommodating and possibly cheaper than a RV. RV's are costly when they break down, and trailers need little maintenance.
Full time job and still homeless. It's time to care not to look for more cash rich Tennants. Revolutionary times are coming I hope we can avoid the death always tied to class wars like this.
It's more about the shitty policies that make no economical sense in these places, not the classes. Cali's shitty policies cost everyone a fortune, and then some of them fuel the drug problem like free needle handouts and no criminal citations.

FUNNY. I was in San Jose working a contract. A family friend let me stay at her house. It was all paid for by the Government, along with her Medicare, food stamps, welfare, etc. And she had an autistic son and mother. She signed each of them up for with the same setup. THREE HOUSES, rent all paid by the Govt'. plus all the other benefits mentioned. Two townhouses ($600-650k each) and a single home unit ($800k).
Welsh73&77 I live in a republican state and homelessness is crazy here. It's not always about sanctuary towns/cities or democrates. More homeless live where they won't die from weather. California, Arizona are hospitable cause of weather. Portland's hospitable because of all the food kitchens and open camp grounds. Homeless are in every town in some amount but they die in Chicago, Montana etc during winter. If ur homeless I'd rather spend winter in Arizona if u can make it there. In summer I'd rather spend it in Oregon or california. The south east has too many bugs for huge numbers of homeless. So I think if they can hope a train, hitch, the can go to the best spot for the season. If not they're stuck. If they make it to a reasonably easy to survive place they might just stay.
@@ThePp12345678 Yeah and you republicans think you are all a big help when you do nothing but blame Democrats . For real . Maybe you can not do a lot . What does it MATTER, Jay Money?!!? It's so expensive in the Sheeple's Socialist Republik Of Kalifornia ( or is that "Baby Cuba?" ) that both engineers and laymen ALIKE are all sleeping in tents!!!
RedRedMane it’s rather misleading for the guy to say that people who works for these tech giants live in tents and are homeless. It makes people think that even tech engineers go homeless which is not true. Let’s be real here. The people who go homeless, except for those with mental illnesses, all have problems with drug abuse, gamble addictions, or are ex-cons and etc.
If I worked a $100k+ tech job, I'd live in a van by choice. I'm not going to school, possibly taking out a loan for it, and putting in all that effort to get that good of a job to live like I make $30k when most of my timell be spent at work. Fuck that...
@Roger Murillo For the same reason I have. Jobs not paying enough to equal the rising costs just to sustain stability. To live on your own leaves no room for even your car breaking down, clothes or extras. So moving in together allows more flexibility.
@Roger Murillo Not even the poor, the policies there destroy everyone but the absolute wealthiest. That stat's government is the most vile and corrupt in the country, and Pelosi thinks she's fit to run the house. Good luck, I hope that government is fed to a dumpster or you make it out before being ruined.
@ Deborah why don't you move to where it's cheaper and there's more opportunities? Why do you continue to struggle? Immigrants do it all day and every day. They leave their crappy country to find a better place, job, opportunities. Whose fault is it really?

Its hard for all of us but what I can't stand is the trash. When the cities know where the are and there are alot of them then why can't they provide dumpsters so at the least the can keep it in one place.
So, that guy makes $2500/mo, has no bills, and still can't afford a place? Something isn't adding up. People sublet rooms out there for $600/mo. It will be if we let these morons run the country. I'm not religious, but thank f*cking god Hillary lost. I see the same things happening in Cali that happened in Detroit, just slightly different situations. Detroit burned down in the 80's, now Cali has been burning down from shitty forest management and other terrible policies. They never tackle the problems, just offer insignificant handouts and promises they never follow through on. I'm from Detroit, and lived through it for over 30yrs.
I like that false statement from Gavin Newsom where he states that California will provide shelter for all those who need it. We have almost 40,000 homeless in Silicon Valley. I spoke to a group the other day who were living in the Walmart parking lot. They informed me that even though they had applied for low income housing and that it would take up to 10 years before they would be placed somewhere. They also informed me that it was their belief that illegal immigrants were given priority for housing.
Can you send some documentation that illegals are getting help you can say whatever you want the United States government doesn't care about white people anymore and you guys are pissed off and blaming other nationalities because you are a bunch of racists homeless f****** screaming in the streets. you ever heard the old saying what goes around comes around. Now It came around to the white monger and from your own white race. now you can tell us how it feels.
Instead of paying vast millions of dollars for an army of social workers who are not solving the problem, give that money to homeless people. THAT might make real change.

Sadly Art, you are correct, same here in BC, many people have said fuck the law and went into off grid living in what they call tiny homes, campers, motorhomes, homemade trailers etc. I was one of those people when I was told by a Dr. that he couldn't give me a light duty slip because he felt that my degenerative bone disease in my back was irreversible so he forced me to retire early from my working superintendent position from fear of being sued by my employer if he allowed me to continue working. The employer told me he without the letter their insurance could be compromised if they continued my employment and couldn't afford a nonworking supervisor. Fortunately I got through the hoops to finally get my pension and an opportunity came along where I could subsidize my CPP as a part time consultant for another contractor. I am an exception to the majority here in BC. 😉🍻
Good to hear a better view to the homeless situation in your town. So, many circumstances can cause a person to become unsheltered. It can happen to anyone, even the rich, a fire, earthquake, war can change a life so fast, a crash that effects money, material wealth is not a guarantee.
I live in rv and just having hard time getting on disability. Im living off my wife. She became disabled after getting hurt on a job. I was working and told her that god forbid i ever lose my job then we will apply for her. Well 3 years ago 160 of us were laid off. We went down to apply for her disability and we were told she cant get ssid because we waited 10 years to file. So basically we were penalized for not taking what we did not need at the time. I have now filed because she is 60 getting ssi and im not able to work due to health myself. We live in a park that charges 550 her check just covers that and electric and propane with no money left over. We are not bad people just tried to do the right thing and could end on the street if i dont get my disability. I worked 40 years low end jobs. But always worked. I hear a lot of people say bad things and it scares me that we could end on street. We talked about killing ourselves first.
He's lucky to have it. Housing is PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE for nearly all workers. $2500 a month does not allow you to rent any apartment, anywhere in the Bay Area.
The problem is the greedy nature of the capitalistic system . Screw the current tenants, I will increase the rent because there are people willing to pay it. Those who can not pay, go live on the streets or just die. Capitalism produces both great wealth and massive poverty, there is no other way to look at this problem that to look at the root of all which is 'POVERTY". It is the main cause of crime, homelessness, drug addiction and a host of other chronic problems. Neither party, the courts or law enforcement have a coordinated approach because the precious capitalistic system pays everyone's salaries and we can not tamper with it.
Our little town just joined the ranks. We have our very own Tent City. It borders our pristine river. Our town got greedy and put in a casino and let a New University come here. It didnt help any of the locals but believe me the money-hungry landlords doubled rents because of the students. And people have nowhere to go. A 2 bedroom apartment was about 8 or $900 a month. Now a 1 bedroom is $1500. Its disgusting.
Only way to change things is for people to stop voting the same people in, if you vote the same you get the same. Obviously enough people need to realise that first before changes will happen.
No doubt...with tears in my eyes,I see how true the Bible is,God's word...I'm not sure what verse it says, where we left his sheep get lost...we helped all those who were already far,and well fed(speaking spiritually)but those who truly needed it,were chased away, and we have done that...he says,he will help them, because we've let them stray away, where they fell prey and scattered to the wolves,I don't see a reporter ,I see a whole spirit of God,within people, helping those who we've forgot about,we were busy thinking of ourselves, our families, how great everything was, careers,we had it so good,we crushed those below, indirectly, but systematically,it just happens that way...it's by God's grace we have what we have,it's not because of all we've worked, how we've bled for it,it's not our efforts that have gave us what we have, but somehow...because we live in the land of opportunity, because we work for a living...our words, though we claim to live and honor God,they changed from,I have what I have because of God...to,I work hard for what all I have,I deserve...we go to the courts,we pay our taxes,we deserve,we demand ...it scares me ,not for myself, but I fear for people's souls, who feel secure in God,when those words come out of their mouths,in the courtrooms,in their homes,in the streets,on media...if we only knew how powerful those words in the mouths of believers means to God...it lets him know, that though we claim our faith is in him,our actions, and those words, prove otherwise ... How I wish we can understand how God feels ..
Adriana Morales you're so right. if they cry to God because of their pain, and being disregarded as NOTHING. The wrath of God can come down and everyone will realized God was not a joke. Every word spoken against the poor, or outcast is being recorded...

Most people who are hooked on drugs & other types of addiction will ALWAYS be poor. They are unable to live within their means. If I were an addict, I'd ALSO be living on the streets or in someone's doorway. The problem will NOT be solved by Giving these people more money - They'll just spend it on their addiction - Which will only lead to an even earlier death for them. What they need is to be removed from the source(s) causing their addiction. Perhaps - with their permission - they could be relocated to some closed army bases that could serve partly as hospitals... and partly as schoolrooms for educating them to help themselves - all the while keeping the drugs, etc. away from them at least until their systems are clean. I know, it sounds wild - But I think it can work for many of them.
How am I supposed to feel sorry for a grown ass man who is a valet and is on probation?? At some point he needs to accept the fact that he has made some very poor decisions.
