The town of Parangaricutirimícuaro
is getting un-parangaricutirimicuarized.
The un-parangaricutirimicuarizer who
un-parangaricutirimicuarizes it,
will be a good un-parangaricutirimicuarizer.
On February 20, 1943, Dionisio Pulido was plowing his cornfield in the outskirts of the town of Paricutín Michoacán, when he witnessed the birth of the youngest volcano in the Americas.
Only a few months later, both the town of Paricutín and that of San Juan Parangaricutiro had already been buried in ash and lava. Only the towers of the church in San Juan poke through the debris. But there were no human losses. All their people were evacuated to the outskirts of Uruapan, Michoacán, where they rebuilt their lives, founding the town of New San Juan Parangaricutiro.
The name Parangaricutiro comes from the Purepecha words "parangari": small plateau, and "cutirimi" the name of a nearby stream.
From there some pranksters invented, adding the word "æru" which means place of, the tongue twister: "parangaricutirimícuaro"
I hope I can go visit the ruins of old San Juan someday, and I recommend you to do so as well. Just like me, you'll be able to know the Purepecha people who live in the beautiful mountains of Michoacan, and taste some of the ancient Mexico that can still be experienced to this day.
