WHY I OFTEN DON'T MENTION OTHER BRANDS IN MY VIDEOS.
You may have noticed that I often don't mention the original brands that watches I am reviewing pay homage to. This is very intentional and not meant to offend you or the original brands. I lost my first channel in October 2020 which I had spent 9 months growing and invested a significant amount of money in simply because I had mentioned the original brands in some of my videos. There are people who try to use RU-vids lack of understanding when it comes to the difference between homage watches and fake watches to attack other channels and their owners and sadly I fell foul of this in 2020. This channel was also attacked recently and RU-vid deleted content simply because I had said 'subby homage' and 'Rolex homage' in two videos despite the watches in the videos being perfectly legal homage watches. Please understand that I can not afford to risk my channel so I will no longer be mentioning other brands when reviewing homage watches.

This budget San Martin offering is way better than seiko premium prospexs and probably most entry level Swiss watches. I have this watch and it’s beautiful. Lume is great, sapphire great, milled clasp great. Solid end links👍

I got the 62mas homage delivered yesterday. Paid 140 in the pre-sale, sale. Unbelievable quality for that price. Margins on it must be razor thin. Think the cuts they made were in all the sensible places. The enamel dial is the better than what they offer in the more premium version. Very happy with it.

Well, because about 98% of everything they spew out is generic copies. They are high quality, true, but also very, very boring. I am hoping they can gradually produce more of their own, interesting designs.

I recently reviewed one of their more 'budget' offers too... The SN0008C. On the whole I think they've reduced the cost in smart ways. The only real thing that I'm not that keen on is the use of pin and collar. I'd rather they had used split pins instead. I actually did a comparison with the older 'premium' version. So, its interesting to see the differences side by side. There are more subtle little things than you'd expect really.

Plain case back on the 62 MAS is also different but not a biggy for most people. Quite an interesting development from SM. I guess if you’ve got capacity then chasing volume makes sense compared to trying to moving upwards quality and price-wise (a “Grand SM”?), esp. when the brand might not stretch that much and volumes won’t be that much.

Hi Gary. I had one of the 62MAS’ and just a couple of things- the hands/indices have always been all polished, the brush/polish detail is the same, but there was a deep stamped case back and on that version it’s blank. Also, although this one doesn’t come with the new clasp, I don’t think this model ever did, so not really a ‘cost saving’ there either. The bezel is slightly different to my model and therefore could be cheaper. Having said that, their 11.11 price for this is about £154, and I got the ‘better’ version for £140 in last year’s sale- So it isn’t a cheaper version really is it?! 😅

Oooh that new 62MAS looks fantastic! I would really be tempted if I didn't already have the Seiko SPB143 in my collection. The NH35 is the perfect movement in that vintage Seiko homage, I don't see the point of having the PT5000 in it.

To muddy the waters further. There is a SN008 (BB58 homage) available for what I hope would be $150 available on a store that's not the official store. Also I have the v4 62mas (which I adoringly wore for almost three years) and I can't really see how this model cheaped out except for a capped seconds hand. If anything, mine has some quirks (weird rehaut, weird bracelet and could have been a bit more petite) and the new model fixes them all.

It seems like the bracelet tapers from 20mm to 18mm rather than 16mm. Some, including me, may find those 20>18mm bracelets quite chunky.

They can't take too much away and still be at their high level, but I think aluminum bezel inserts are still really nice and arguably just as attractive in their own aesthetic... and cheaper. And I think you can have good enough lume to read your watch a few minutes after coming indoors from a bright day outside but it doesn't have to be a torch 4 hours later. It wouldn't affect the quality feeling on wrist.

Pin bracelet is fine by me, it's only a 'hassle' once until you have sized it up and you do not have to re-tighten pins down the road. NH34/35/36/38 should always be an option for their watches, so big plus for me! VH31 would be awesome to see as an alternative! The only thing I would really like to see as standard is the quick-adjust clasp. Always thought they would be a gimmick but they are an absolute gamechanger, in my opinion! Also got the enamel blue 62MAS on the way, can't wait for it as it is my 7th San Martin already :)

Using the VH31 would make affordable San Martin watches. The only downside is that the VH31 does not have a date complication

I have the 62 mas and have owned it for almost 2 years. It is this exact watch other than the secondhand… Which has a l give lumed tip. I really think this is just an older version that they’re selling again at a discount. Clasp/bracelet finishing watch head dial all the same. I paid 200 and it appears that it’s going to sell for 140.

Many watch collectors love the symmetry of no date. Also, when you have many watches and change watch daily, it makes it easier to set time and go.

The only thing I can think of that they could have done on the 62MAS reimagine to lower cost is use an an aluminum bezel insert instead of ceramic. Don't think they could do the same on the Roller though.

TBH... I snagged my Cronos Sub on sale (and for a mere pittance in import fees ... for *some* reason :D ) and it cost me just over €170, all in. For that kinda money, I think I'd always opt for the Cronos. Not only does it have one of the best adjustable clasps I've ever had on a watch (not their own design, but it works like a charm), but it also comes with *all* the features you'd expect on a steel diver (like screwed links) and it has a PT5000 4Hz movement. Fit and finish are also excellent and, I reckon, comparable to the level of finishing on my San Martin 0109. Oh, and it also came in the same black plastic case SM seem to have reverted to for their "economy" watches.

Yeah the Cronos is a better option, and I regret not getting that one after the QC issue I had with my San Martin SN017G-B just like the one reviewed here.. although the one here doesn't have the misprinted dial mine has where the position of the 6 oclock is off. If you take a photo and draw a line from 12 to 6 minute markers it should cut through the pinion. All my watches do except for this San Martin. My eyes told me it was off and Photoshop confirmed it. Wished I'd bought the Cronos... for the screw pins and glidelock too.

@@thegorn I forgot to add: It's *not* 100% perfect (at least my example isn't). The color of the lume (in daylight) on the hands and indices doesn't match *exactly*. Hands have a bit of a "harder" white, while the indices are ever so slightly "off white". In night-mode, the hands will fade a bit quicker than the rest of the dial. I suspect there are more layers of lume on the indices than on the hands. IIRC, BGW9 can turn a little "off white" when there's a lot of layers of the stuff applied. Perhaps this is deliberate and they want to match the color of the indices with that of a fully lumed bezel - which mine doesn't have. Should probably add that my San Martin seems to have slightly longer lasting lume overall and its hands and indices have the same tone of white in daylight - so it's not like this is unavoidable on a cheaper watch. Still: The Cronos beats all of my Steinharts and my Christopher Ward C63 in the lume-department. I'm also not 100% sure about the bezel action - which is very smooth but also very light. It's aligned perfectly, but getting it to a precise position is a bit fiddly because the bezel doesn't have much resistance ... so it's easy to turn it one click too far. On the bright side: I've never had the bezel go stiff or ratchet-y on me - which does seem to happen on all divers I own/have owned from time to time. Probably due to dirt getting between the case and the bezel, because giving these watches a good wash will fix the problem.

@@WatchesOnWood Since Seiko use the plastic movement holder on NH35's I assume it's not a big deal. The older discontinued SXK007/SKX009 used a thicker plastic movement holder than those used on the newer 5KX models. I know that from doing Seiko mods. The plastic movement holder comes with the movement so San Martin probably use the plastic one where they've designed the watch around that NH35 movement, and a metal one where they've adapted the NH35 to another case shape that also takes PT5000... is my guess.

I’ve been trying to find a S*b homage with black dial and green bezel for ages.. I know there are plenty of cheap ones, but this is the first decent one I’ve come across. Would really like a high beat movement, but this seems like a decent compromise if the price is right. It’s an absokutey beautiful looking watch!

I've got the Green Bezel/Black Dial SN0017G-V3 Fan Edition (as in your video) and was super impressed with the level of finishing. Much better than the three Armida A4's I've got for around a 1/4 of the cost of each of those and the case/bracelet/clasp build quality is undoubtedly better than my Tudor 79180 Big Block... The pin bracelet doesn't phase me as it's pretty much the same as my Omega Speedmaster and I've added the newer style Glidelock clasp (also available in pin fitment) that adds some additional length to the bracelet for those with larger wrists (I have 8" diameter wrists). I got the watch from the San Martin Design Flagship Store and the clasp from the Sanmartin Store respectively. Neither store had the other item/s in stock. The colours being offered are Black Dial/Black Bezel, Black Dial/Green Bezel and Green Dial/Green Bezel. I think the only low point is the movement and its overall accuracy in comparison with my other timepieces, but I think I can live with that for the price paid! What I do know is that I will be buying more from these guys....

I got one of the SN017G-B like you but mine is faulty. The 12-pinion-6 alignment is completely skewy that the 6 oclock dial index lines up with the "3" on the upside down "30" instead of splitting the middle. I got two Steeldive SD1953's at the same time and they were fine. I took photos and used the line tool in photoshop to confirm what my eyes see. I'm raising it as a fault with San Martin / AliExpress - it's a misprinted dial. San Martin aren't all they are cracked up to be with QC. Besides this latest issue, I've had a SN0109 with a beat error of 1.6 and a misaligned bezel, and I've had a SN107-G that had half a dozen black arm hairs hidden below the frickin bracelet! They have great case finishing - the best on AliExpress, but assembly and overall QC leaves a lot to be desired.

It seems like whenever a company introduces a budget line, what sends up happening is the regular line starts creeping up in price. Then the budget line fills in the void at the old price point with lesser quality. Let's hope this is not the case here.

May be it is economy of scale, they increase production volume, all the parts become cheaper. So some models can be sold cheaper as the firm increases its size.

This could be interesting, depending on the actual price, quality and the types of watches they offer. San Martin has become pretty expensive for an Aliexpress brand, especially when you consider that in some countries you have to pay quite a lot more for customs and taxes - a bit more than 30% in my case, so their watches can end up quite pricey in the end. And all of Aliexpress watches have one big drawback - you can't actually try them on nor see them live before you buy them, so you can't experience how you feel about them before you buy them, like you can if you go to a brick and mortar store. And not even the best review in the world can give you that feeling.

Got one, a San Martin SN0107-G it works fine, looks great, only negative, they send it with not enough extra links, if you are build like a Hobbit it's no problem, if you have decent Dutch wrists, the watch won't fit, good luck with getting more extra links.... They don't provide those... Took a lot to get those...

I’m on the fence on buying this new 39mm 62mas from SM. I have a 6.75” wrist and I’m afraid that the end link to end link length will be too long for me.. if anyone knows this measurement pls lmk!

I really like the dial color of the first watch - definitely a unique shade, pretty "masculine", elegant, yet different, than the ubiquitous black, white and navy-blue. I'm also a big fan of screwed-down bracelet links, since adjustment is always hassle-free, and manufacturers often attach a fitting screwdriver in a box anyway. Never had problems with such bracelets, at least not yet. This is somewhat opposed to classic push-pins - I've already broken at least two cheap bracelet jigs, which were attached to some of the watches I've bought in the past; besides you always fear to scratch the bracelet on your brand new watch. I've already learned, that watchmakers sometimes demand really outrageous money for such a simple thing, as bracelet adjustment, so I rather do it myself. As to what San Martin should do to lower their prices even more, my answer is - nothing. There is simply a line you should not cross. There should be something as "bare quality minimum". I mean, look at what Swatch and Omega did with "Moonswatch". In theory, it sounds magnificent - an "Omega" watch available virtually to anyone. In practice - they've made an embarassing piece of junk, a toy watch, that nobody sane will wear daily, in fear of wearing it down instantly, or just breaking it. Can you make - for example - a non-jeweled mechanical watch these days? Well, you "can", but the question is, whether you really want it, because it's doubtful, if it would be even worth anything as a timepiece... Actually, San Martin could expand their offer even more, by making some high quality quartz watches - with some reasonably good Ronda movements, for example. They would find customers among people, who go primarily for watch precision. Now, even with San Martin's high quality case finishing and good bracelets with on-the-fly clasp adjustments, such watches would be still substantially cheaper, than automatics. In my opinion, that would work better in building brand's reputation, than just cutting corners and using cheaper materials or worse quality control.

@@trut52 Well, when buying watches for my collection, the "brand name" was never that important to me - the actual quality really is. There are multiple examples of "established brands" with some heritage, even swiss ones, which currently make pretty low quality watches, at least considering their prices. Not a week ago, I was looking at some Citizen diver's watches, and I've got the opportunity to handle one titanium model. The bezel action on this one was atrocious, comparing to basically any of Aliexpress watches I've got, and some of those were almost half the price, while also having sapphire glass with AR coating, great lume, actually better water resistance et c. So, I'm not completely writing off a brand, just because "it's chinese" or because it's not well established yet, provided they know, what they're doing, and they're good at it. To me, price around 300 USD is a reasonable limit, where you can already expect to get a solid, well made automatic "tool watch" (like a "diver"), packed with some features. I'm actually wary about mechanical watches with a price below 150 USD, because for such price some corners just HAD to be cut - materials, lume, water resistance limit, crystal type, you name it. Currently, I own two San Martin watches and they belong into my favorites - one of them is a hi-beat with 100 m WR, sapphire glass with AR coating, screw down crown (even though it's not a diver's watch), with date window, three subdials, high-quality 3D textured dial and a bracelet that matches the one on my PRX (it's the same type) - for well under 500 USD. You would be hard pressed to find a watch with similar specs from a "renowned brand" for the same price. Though I totally agree about Orient - if you need cost-effective, yet high quality watch, one of Kamasu or Mako models is a surefire😁

I dunno.....might as well as just dropped prices on existing stock to clear them out, maybe advertise their own sale week, i mean they could go really cheap and use a nato or rubber strap......but that would not be too attractive...to me,they look as good as the rest of the line up. There is a lot of quality in a regular SM for the money,and from the video the buget look as good as the regular line up (in hand side by side perhaps any differences are more noticable?)

To answer your question regarding some methods to lower price points of nearly identical products: Cheaper packaging, assembled by the less skilled workers, inferior warranty, lower qc tolerances of the movement (use the movements in stock that aren't quite up to normal spec and don't tune them).

Like San Martin had any qc or skilled workforce tuning or assembling their watches in the first place. That’s why I stopped buying them after 2 out of 3 had major problems with the movement on delivery. San Martin themselves aren’t interested in repairing or replacing faulty watches. Making you open a watch and video the movement and then saying that the rotor spinning wildly when you turn the crown is normal in a pt5000 and grinding noises and sticking are nothing to worry about. The other one I had trouble with was a sellita based model but that was bought through wrwatches who at least took it back for repair/replacement even though it cost me a fortune in taxes for a second time to get it back along with postage to China. I will stick to watches with dealers in the UK from now on so I can have any problems dealt with easily for no cost. Maybe if San Martin got a UK dealer I’d try them again.

@@murph8411 I can confirm. for the 6 San Martins I've bought, 3 have had QC issues. I bought the SN017G-B shown here and it's probably the last straw for me. My list in order of issues are: 1. SN0107-G1v2 (Tudor Ranger homage) - had half a dozen black arm hairs hidden underneath the bracelet. You can only see them when taking the bracelet off as the caseback edge extends to the lugs. Dodgy. I opened the caseback and removed the arm hairs. 2. SN0109 - (Tudor Black Bay GMT homage) - bezel alignment was off, and the NH34 had a beat error of 1.6. I regulated the movement myself. I intend to pop the bezel off with this expensive bezel removal tool I have and then steam the bezel insert off and straighten it. I'm hoping the glue isn't too hard that this works without me damaging the aluminium insert. 3. SN017G-B (Sub 116610LV black-dial homage) dial has been misprinted. Drawing a straight line between 12 and 6 minute markers doesn't go through the centre pinion. My eyes told me it's off, and I photographed half a dozen other Chinese watches and drew lines in photoshop and confirmed only this San Martin has the issue. On the fence whether to raise the issue with San Martin or just flip it on eBay. Have been on the fence about that for a week now. Think I might just sell on eBay and not have to deal with the Chinese.

I recently bought 2 of the higher priced watches and..they came in the cheaper pelican boxes, soooooo…not sure their reply holds water. I had to ask for the barrel style boxes as I DO care what they come in and that part matters to me - especially on the higher price models

I'm not happy to hear this! I love the new green watch cases the watches come in. I consider San Martin a Premium AliExpress brand and I am happy to pay more money for them. I hope they don't go backwards and start making cheaper lower quality watches.

Personally I’d prefer as small a box as possible as I don’t have room to keep boxes for everything I buy and hate huge boxes that take up lots of room. Great big wooden things or wood effect things that I’d rather just throw away! 😃

Manufacturers have been doing similar things for years. The same fishing lure from the same company with almost identical packaging (looks identical at first glance) is not quite the same quality as the fishing lure if purchased directly from the company. Manufactures will very subtly cut corners to meet price points custom tailored to the different retailers.

These would have been so good if they had female endlinks. I think the male endlinks are too long for the lug to lug. I actually prefer their cylinder barrel type packaging than their "leather" cylinder packaging.

Smart of San Martin, I think! With people's discretionary budgets shrinking, it might have been harder for San Martin to catch buyers at their current price tier. Hopefully, San Martin keeps the qualities that make them so attractive, overall, so they don't get lost in the sea of watches on Aliexpress.

I'm not really a fan of this "Value" range of watches. Maybe they have no choice and they have to make them because that's what sells. I like the fact that San Martin is more of a premium budget brand and I'm willing to pay more for a better watch.

They have premium case finishing and case tolerances. Their metal engineering is top notch. But their dial printing and assembly and movement non-regulation... it's not great. I've had misprinted dials, misaligned bezels, large beat errors, and even worker hairs caught in the caseback and tucked underneath the end links instead of being removed!!!! fkn sh1t stuff.

Push pins? No. Hard no. That's a line no one should willingly cross. Push pins are bloody awful and one of the attractions of China made watches; the fact they haven't fobbed buyers off with utterly terrible things like push pins.

I don't mind them ripping off Rolex/Tudor/Seiko, for different reasons. For the Rolex/Tudor - because they don't pay taxes, are nasty companies IMHO, and charge too much. For Seiko - it's because they also charge too much, but at the same time give us less than even the Chinese (worse bracelets, worse crystals) and still have QC issues. It's karmic ripping those off. What I don't like is when they go after small independents and even microbrands, ripping off shops like Christopher Ward, Sinn, Zodiac, even Wolbrook.. I'm like... come on! I vote with my dollars and buy the originals of those.

I think this makes a lot of sense, particularly if they continue homages in this cheaper form and concentrate development on their own designs to develop the brand for the future.
