I love this. It's not outlandish, or over the top, just a decent looking GMT with an interesting inner 24 hour insert and bags of features. If this had a different brand name on the dial, you'd be expecting to pay double the asking price. The 24 click bezel is a bit weird, but as their first in-house design, I think they've done a cracking job. Nice review work as always!
Endy! they have made other "own designs" and proper ones too that do not really show features from various watches however they don't sell apparently hence all the homage stuff. I do have to say I really do like this model.
Thanks for another great review Mike. Like this watch very much and you get a lot of watch for the price, keeps making me realise how over the top prices are for so called luxury watches when you get a lot of the high end features on a San Martin.
This one is certainly eye catching and with the 38mm sizing makes it perfect. Pricing is subjective, want to by a luxury brand you are just paying for that badge, okay some good watchmaking and creativity but a steel watch that is mass produced, and lets face it even Rolex are to a degree. Also usually machine assembled is not worth the thousands from a cost to profit point of view but they charge and people buy. The last in this trilogy San Martin video run I have 3 Tudor homage. I am at logger heads as Tudor is a brand I feel I can aspire to and own but on the other hand would these be so different in looks and feel? In some ways I see deliberate homage watches as a stepping stone to the real thing. Like a try before you buy.
Made a negative comment, came back after buying it. I now understand that we’re looking at a product of an alternate universe, where Rolex maintained the design cues from the Milgauss when designing the first GMT Master, and said GMT Master was originally a mil-spec exclusive commissioned by the British army. Outstanding homage! Bravo!
This watch caught my eye right away also. As for originality, I’m just glad it’s not a 1 to 1 photocopy. In fact I think this is San Martin’s future. My favorite SM Watch I own is the SN045. It also takes design elements from several Seiko’s but is not a 1 to 1 photocopy. Thanks for the detailed review.
For San Martin to push more models that are not 1 for 1 people need to buy them in big numbers. One of the founders of SM put a comment up on instagram a few months back explaining that with all their "own Designs" they never sell well and result in making a loss once they factor in design concept and production costs into it. Its a shame because I think with the right ideas and some good marketing they could actually become quite respectable brand. Me being me have suggested many ideas to them including producing prototypes first for reviewers but they never respond with any more than a polite thank you.
@@mywatchreviewsYes. I’ve noticed some of their original designs haven’t sold well. I think they should go the Islander Watch route. Start off by making watches similar to popular designs with their own twist (like this SN0112). And then venture out into more original designs. And yes, your idea of sending prototypes to reviewers is a good idea. I get it though; making a quality 1:1 copy and making good money is tempting. Hope they plan on playing the long game. No one is yelling at Tissot for making a AP Homage. You and I won’t be around but a hundred years from now, our children might be showing off to their friends the San Martin we left them. Cheers.
Another Fab review Mike. Agree with you on the bezel and for those with OCD that doesn't work. Shame too that the 24hr part of the bezel doesn't rotate, giving you another time zone.. Looks like great value for money and especially in a sale. Nice one.
I can agree, also a Tudor vibe although Tudor are really a homage to their Parents Rolex. This one like I said in the video has influences and I think its the love child of Rolex and Doxa
I think their only mistake was making the markers so small. It's the same marmite effect I get from Blancpain watches, where they use markers off a 36mm watch on a 40mm case and it looks like a mess.
San Martin are really "UP and COMING" eh. This one is a commercial new offering with that dual-bezel eh. I'd love to get your investigative opinion on thieir new TITANIUM SM 0111 Diver ... but it's a high price watch and may be a bit rich for your attention - certainly too costly for me to covet - It is said to be Platinum plated over the light weight Titanium alloys to enhance quality - WOW. Grand Seiko had better look to their laurels !!
love the size, love the design, love the dual-feautre bezel. The 24 click bezel for the timing bezel is a deal-breaker, though. I guess i'm waiting for a V2.
You have to ask the question of what you would use the bezel for . For me I use them occasionally for timing something but mainly for turning for the fun of it .
@@AdAce21 you can… kind of.. it’s just between the long clicks but granted I know what you mean and it’s such a shame for a nice looking watch to have a fundamental floor. I wish to be honest SM would make some prototypes and ask the community and reviewers for feedback. They would end up making a good watch for their fans.
@@MyRetroWatches I couldn't agree with you more. If SM just sent out prototypes to you guys, you'd catch these issues immediately. It'd save them in production costs as well.
Nice review Mike, and a good looking watch.. I love a GMT and as you said a 38mm case with 20mm lugs is a real sweet spot size wise. I actually prefer the all stainless bezel. I might have to check the sale when it starts, who knows, could Be my 1st San Martin 😊
Hi mate, Are you planning on selling this one? It seems you can only buy this model now with all 24 numbers on the bezel which is a massive shame and I won’t buy. Just looks too cluttered. This exact one I will buy though
I really like the half steel and half '' black-coating '' bezel,( Is it paint or enamel ? ) Very reminiscent of some 70's, early 80's bezels that didn't rotate, were fixed but made the watch look nice. I never liked wide coloured bezels on most divers, why I've never bothered with them. This has me very tempted, a bit of a shame the bracelet is so plain.
Thanks, the bezel is ceramic and the dial enamel. To me its the bezel design that I like about this watch along with the sizing. San Martin do seem to put this bracelet on a lot of models yet they do have some much nicer bracelets on earlier stuff that I think are better. Recently I have seen them make a beads of rice one.
@@mywatchreviews The bezel being ceramic is a quality touch. I like a little bit of polished steel to contrast with the brushed finish, I think the strap needed a bit of that just to hi-light the metal finishing, maybe just the centre links polished or something like that. Very nice watch overall for the price though. Can't go wrong with these well proven mechanisms either. I have a collection of over 300 watches from the 40's through to the 80's, mainly, and I like a bit more polishing on things, why I like that fixed and rotating bezel so much, I just love the 70's and 80's stuff. This bezel reminds of those watches in that particular period that have a very similar style to this.
The rotating part of the bezel is marked like a timing bezel but it is only 24 clicks. The 24 hr GMT bezel does not rotate. It is a nice looking watch but SM needs to rationalize the bezel design. For the next version, I would suggest a 120 click bezel and the whole bezel should ratote as one. This should give the user the freedom to use it as a timing or GMT bezel.
They have told me they are modifying the insert because they cant do anything about the clicks. My guess is they have made 100s of cases so need to use them up. I cant see what they could modify on an insert.
That is the same on this one, for me its hard to believe they could make a watch with such an error. I wish they would make some prototypes and push them out to reviewers for feedback and then put into production from that. They would end up with a good watch that would sell if they did that.
They’ve fixed it now with the additional options of a gmt bezel (3 timezones simultaneously) or a world time bezel (2 timezones simultaneously + 1 world time).
Bold statement. I’ve 200+ watches and 25 of those are Chinese including the Sea-Gull 1963 which is the only mechanical chronograph you will get for the price and its originally a Swiss Venus movement. Buy other brands and what you don’t know is parts may well be made in China. Think even Seiko make some movements there .
