Sifu Akers always told us if a fight lasts more than 7 seconds, I am doing something wrong, till this day I agree

I got into a fight once. It was my first fight ever. I learned San Soo during my youth and teen years. Some punk sucker pushed me into a concrete wall with my hands in my pockets. In just a matter of seconds with one hand in my pocket i drop the kids to his knees and hit him so hard he was out for 20 minutes. Kung Fu San Soo has great forms to learn that aid in taking out thugs or jerks.

Sorry for all our lose for SIFU, but God bless you were able to train with him, I trained with sifu Tom Akers in Northern Michigan, the best thing I remember is one month in I thought I was King Shit, but after 2 years, I knew nothing

The type of block set aside... This is still the best Kung-Fu San Soo video clip to be posted on RU-vid in the last week or two. Most of the other stuff makes me sad; like a "crying on the inside kind of clown." I learned that same compound leverage from the late Master Al Rubin, but with a slight variation. That's the great thing about San Soo -- so many different variations to base out lessons with!

San Soo Mike...If you could see the other side you would see that this block immediately turns into a hook. Block first...hook and catch second. Though they happen so close its simultaneous. Dan (the teacher) trained with me in North Hollywood under Master Chuck Cory, so I know exactly what he is doing. He does it well.

@sansooschweiz I've found it easier at times grabbing a thumb rather than a wrist with the block and grab techniques. Thanks for the variation.

What if strikes with the other arm? Great technique
@realkungfusansoo

This is a very effective joint lock and tendon stretch. The block would need to be a soft , almost praying mantis style, hooking or trapping & redirecting type motion. In regards to the entrance, the El Ma stance could leave you too close to your attacker with your right side exposed to his left punch or another attack. You then need to change direction and stretch your leverage out to extend his arm, this also takes time and you need distance to extend his arm in order to set the hold.

Thanks realkungfusansoo for your take on the entrance and block. Position, timing critical in pulling this technique off.I believe your mantis style or softer style block may work to keep the opponent in better position for the rest of the technique especially if the opponent is a fast puncher.

OK Mary230195 I will get back on a front kick lesson. They are incorporated in so many of our forms and techniques that it is safe to say there's a kick to be found in every move. Good request...the front kick can end or change a confrontation quickly...especially for the one trying to kick if not done carefully and properly.

Yes timing is important, and I would argue that timing is the most important when it comes to fighting, but how can you learn and develop timing without sparring?

What Jess said. This stuff is good to learn, it will certainly give you an edge on the average douche. But once you start thinking you’re a trained fighter, that’s where you’re in trouble. The best San Soo masters I know who have been training for over 12 years wouldn’t stand a chance against a guy whose been doing Muay Thai and BJJ for two years. I don’t care how many years you’ve been training, if you’ve never had blows rain down upon you, you’ve never been in a fight. Kung fu San Soo can be very brutal. My training was painful, for sure. But I stay realistic about this stuff. I know a lot of practitioners who live in a world of delusion, with a movie playing inside their head… And they are the main character, you follow me?

Great leverage! The only thing I would question is the initial block. The strike may send his arm out of reach where as a "catch block", striking with the forearm as the wrist catches the offender's arm poses less of a risk of losing it.

If you miss the lock no big deal your elbow lead then you strike the groin that is more than enough to allow time to regroup or retreat
@bradsingleton3964
@bradsingleton3964 5 лет назад
The forward momentum from the combination allows unlimited possible counters such as a leverage for a neck break a simple throw or a simple push to the gound

Short range combat is definitely risky and requires a high skill level.I prefer the El Ma stance as a way to end up at my opponents rear quickly yet remain close.For more protection maybe a variation that parries the opponents punch as you step and hammers to the nose as you turn to the El Ma would protect you more and give time for the adjustments.

Good observation sansoomike. The catch block you describe reminds me of a block from "white bird spreads wings" from the Chen style making sure to control the opponents wrist/arm. Does your catch block catch the punch earlier than the downblock? I also would prefer to kick with the right.

Hello glad I found this, I was wondering do you have DVD series on the forms, or no where I can source them. I left san soo when I was a Green belt and would like to have something for practice. going back to the beginning forms. Thank you

A really nice technique, but that seems like too much to memorize for a real life situation. I like your first technique of popping his arm to the side. After doing that, the guy's chin is completely exposed. My natural instinct would be to hit him with a well placed elbow strike to that chin with the closest arm then unleash fury on him while he is dazed.

You have the right to your own opinion of course, but Muay Thai is effective. This looks effective...in slow motion....and if someone's letting you do it. Like in this video. No offense. Not trying to argue. Just saying. I know what I know.
