His impact cannot be overstated enough. At a time when Michael, Prince, Madonna, Whitney and George dominated the 80s, out of nowhere comes Terence Trent D’Arby like a strike of lightning. Completely shook up the industry and disappeared in that same flash. Multi instrumentalist, great singer, song writer and charisma by the loads.
Vibrator is pretty good too. I remember passing it up at first because Princes Gold Experience was out at the same time and I didn't have money for both. But I like both albums as much as the other and listen to Vibrator more these days.
I am almost speechless!! My first comment is a criticism. THIS ENDED TOO SOON!!! This was loooong overdue and right on time!!! Love this dude so much!!!
I don't have time to watch this now unfortunately but I literally pulled up RU-vid and gasped when I saw this on my feed. An absolute legend that deserves his flowers.
Yoe!!!! This dude was absolutely supposed to be the next big thing, Those who know, know! He was the only Masculine pretty boy in the 80's, There I said it. He sung "Who's loving you", without trying to imitate. He's sooooo talented 👏🏾 🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
Seriously, seeing one of the greatest shapers of my life (even to this, my 52nd year), learning that our formative musical journeys literally consisted of the same caliber/dichotomy of artists, remembering those times when I felt profound loss per the media-ized response which I feel kept this profit from fully expanding publicly, yet now being thankful they were (hopefully) spared the evil possibilities, I am brought to a place “where it all makes sense.” I’ve led a life of service with an authentic heart and compassion. I am (more than ever) thankful for the spiritual and artistic influence this piece re-affirms. Blessings, peace, joy, harmony, and love to all who are depicted and who view this piece. =PEACE
I've been following Sananda (TTD) since my travels abroad in 1986-87. I purchased his cassette in France and still have it today! Such an awesome talent.
Thank you Quest for allowing Sananda to open up more than I've heard in other interviews about the Sony situation. I've been following this brother before and after Wildcard. I'm glad he's free to speak freely, verbally and through his many musical talents. This is a real treat. Thx again brother. ✊🏿✌🏿🎶
@QuestloveSupreme My pleasure brother. I'm a drummer as well. You're one of my favorites Quest. Thank you for the inspiration and continued success. ✊🏿✌🏿🤜🏿🤛🏿🥁🎶
My mouth is STILL on the floor 45 minutes in!!! I wore The Hardline OUT!!!!! I'm soooooo happy to be able to watch an "up close and personal" with musicianship personified!!! My cheeks hurt from smiling ALMOST AS MUCH as watching Ahmir NAIL the Phil Collins In The Air Tonight drum solo WITH PHIL COLLINS!!!!!!!!! Kudos & bravo!!! 🦅🦅🦅
Sananda didn't lie. He IS a genius amongst other human and superlative things. I own at least one copy of every album he has released and have been fortunate to see him live in London and shake his hand. You name them, I've seen 'em all or enough of the greats to confidently say that he is one of the greatest and most complete artists to explode onto the music scene. Not only one of the greatest singers ever, but also one of the greatest songwriters of alltime. This was a beautiful and profoundly illuminating exchange between two brilliant men of the Arts and culture. Loved it. Thank you! PS: I need another 4 hours of this!
But his basically saying "Michael Jackson stopped my career and today in 2024 I don't want any MJ fanatics remorse towards me, so I need to say it politely."
I'm going to call him TTD (no disrespect) but thats when I MET him - in the 90s! very exciting artist indeed. Later I had the honour working with his key collaborator Kevin (I won't drop names here _) who is the cousin of a college buddy from Boston. Crazy small universe. Kevin helped produce a top tier record with my super talented cousins who were Warner artists at the time. As u can tell from ur interview, #SanandaMaitreya (TTD) is not 'impressed' with superficial fame, or other humans as much as the average person. Methinks that s the HOW behind his brand of GENIUS. His debut records, his concerts, his more recent Euro/Italian work, has impressed me as maestro scale musicianship. Simple as that. Glad uve shared ur 1st engagement with the Legend of TTD with us grateful, mortal fans. 🥰
My favorite artist since Hardline! I have never lost contact with his work! I also feel honored that I saw him in concert with Questlove in Philly in 95!
Wtf, the genius the legend, sananda, best interview with this dude. 3 Kings: Michael Prince and Sanada. Sooo glad that people are re visiting him. Neither Fish to my favourite Vibrator, Slaying everything. Love!
It’s perfect that he harbors no ill will towards what happened to him but now sees it as a blessing that may have saved his life. That recognition coupled with him being comfortable in his own skin in his own way playing small clubs now and “paying his dues” on the back end of his meteoric rise to prominence is also priceless. His self awareness is most impressive
My godmother tried to make me throw away my Terence Trent Darby album when I was 18. She was a minister. She told me I was going to hell for listening to "that devil music." I just played it when she wasn't around cuz the devil's music was GOOOOOD. 😊😂😂
I initially knew him as TTD where he seemed like a reincarnation of Wilson Pickett. At the time there was Prince, TTD and MJ. All of them great in their own right. Later he matured into Sananda Maitrea and “Wildcard” was a beautiful and joyous reintroduction to his music. He’s still great.
You have to do another interview! This was gold ! Gold!! He is so important . So profound oh my goddess! Thank you so much for this ! Thank you Questlove! We have so much to learn from him 💜💜💜💜
Would be great if Sananda could be interviewed without Questlove interrupting his flow and going into streams of self-consciousness and talking about himself…either interview the guest, or talk about yourself, but not both, because salient points by Sananda are being constantly missed because of this. RESPECT THE INTERVIEWEE.🌿
I was in EUROPE of 1987 when TERENCE at that time released The Hardline According to Terence Trent D‘arby . SANANDA MAITREYA is one of my favorite artist as well.
I’m so grateful for this interview. This was VERY revealing. I learned more about the sequence of events leading to and throughout Terence’s fame….the human obstacles within the industry…the games they played, etc. And just Sananda’s raw emotion and expression. I love this. For those “trendy fans” who assume someone needs to sit in front of a screen for 1 hr and 48 minutes: you can listen to this podcast, in pieces.😐 With earphones in….while doing other tasks. Jesus. 😒
Liked the first album…loved the second and the third. Pre internet I lost the transformation, such a shame. Looking forward to meeting Sananda, thanks for the reintroduction.
I have most of his albums and I am longtime supporter since 1987. Sananda is one of those artists who labels really wanted, but don't know what to do with. I still think Columbia dropped the ball on his second album "Neither Fish Nor Flesh".
@@QLSProducer I wish Quest had asked him about the dream he had about Marvin which resulted in his song 'To Know Someone Deeply, Is To Know Someone Softly'. There is a parallel with D'Angelo who also had dreams about Marvin.
Quest brought up the proverbial 'curse' of Nas's illmatic in comparison with The Hard Line, and I just thought I'd mention that Nas is a big fan of Sananda.
My favorite male voice of all time. Two of the best concerts i’ve ever attended. I was just listening to him last night! Maybe why this came up in my feed.😊
WONDERFUL conversation. I learned so much! And not just about music but about identity staying true to who you are, and powers that be and how they try to control….this is a jump off point to learn more. Thank you Sananda for sharing your journey and wisdom. Thank you Questlove for providing the vehicle for this conversation to take place, and your facilitating the discussion. Masterful! My sons are reading Tao of Wu right now and learning so much, it is not lost on me that Sananda was wearing the Wu! And Questlove has spiritual background in his space too.
@@QuestloveSupreme In Bern he had Gold Yellow Hair and was in a State of total Vulnerability whereas in Zürich he was Sananda. In Bern at the Open Air many People in the Audience were irritated, but I liked it. He played before a Big Crowd. In Zürich he played before a 1000 People who came just for him. I do not want to miss both of the very different Concerts. Singing was great at both Concerts. In Berne everything was „Nervous“, in Zürich it was „Secure“ and „Relaxed“. Great Art in both Cases.
One of the rarest insights on the vibe and atmosphere that RnB-Funk-Rock was living on the 80s and early 90s. Very few people talk about this today, system key holders were jealous, thanks to Prince that he treat Sanada with dignity and respect, sadly MJ was the opposite. 1:19:51
As a North Londoner, I remember when TTD lived in Drayton Park and got his hair done by Junior in Finsbury Park (Aquarius hair) I still have the Roots Mellow my Man on a white label that they brought out in London back in 1994!
Hey, Quest. Just wanted to say thank you from the deepest bottom of my heart. Sananda is one of my formative artists and this is the best conversation I have seen from/with him.
Wow! To see my teen idol. To hear them speak with an artist I truly respect and love... you don't know! It was the music of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Brenda Fassie, George Michael, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston and Terrence Trent D'arby that brought hope to us in our darkest days in South Africa 🇿🇦. "If you let me stay..." to this day, a soundtrack to my life! Today "Holding on to you" is on repeat in my car. Love. Love. Love. Fundi Born 1971 South Africa
In 1987 I was a 10 year old boy living in Ft. Lauderdale. That’s when “Hardline” debuted and I had the cassette. My 10 year old self wore that album out❗️ I still listen to it to this day. About 15 years ago I discovered that he’d changed his name, and I started listening to that stuff and I LOVE it as well. The Vibrator” album with “We Don’t Have That Much Time Together” on it❤ The “Wildcard!” album and all the others. He continues to experiment.
Wow. 🥇 What an enjoyable listen! I'm fascinated by these glimpses behind the curtains during the transformation of CBS Records into Sony Music. And his numerous triangulations with the biggest recording artists, during the era of my very first musical memories. Dropping gems from a unique, nuanced perspective. Even the biggest cynic can learn something about the matrix as filtered through Sananda. Although some of it can only be decoded by music industry nerds. 😅
I'm gonna see/hear Teren... Sananda. I was 11 when "Introducing The Hardline" was out and it blow my mind. Back in the day Michael & Prince were the kings but Sananda's debut was amazing. I love "Symphony or dawn" & "Vibrator" as much I love the first album. He got the full pack; voice, dance, music, look,... and genius. I saw him 2 times in Barcelona and it was a perfect 10.
Woooooooooooohooooooo!!!!!!! First time in my existence that I have been a groupie. This literally is my dream. Awwww dude. I have every album. Sananda !!!!!!!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE IT
What a solid well done interview. I loved This artist back in the day and lost track of him. Our Country has a habit of urging people to enter the business based on talent. I feel things changed in the early 90s when pressure became a mood killer to a lot of artists. My thing is only enter this business if you are keen on your business plan, not willing to change your art and not willing to allow others to dictate your style. Like the commenter said, that is Gansta. Artist almost always have a depth to them matched with a sense of self-awareness and the strength to stand on your plan for your path. Good stuff, great guy, and Quest, well he always brings what he promises.
OMG, so this interview is really happening. Been digging in Craig David's musical crates lately and seeing how much Sananda Maitreya influenced his desire to do music for a living in the beginning and always acknowledging him in interviews is Amazing. Can't wait to watch this interview as Sananda Maitreya's live shows has been popping up in my feeds these last few months and remembering buying his 1st album in Junior High school as we had to learn a dance piece for dance class. Glad to See and Hear and Celebrate Sananda Maitreya 🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎵🌷🌷🌷🌷.
Thank you both for this incredible interview! I saw Sananda in 1996 when I was 10 years old at the Fillmore in San Francisco on the Vibrator tour, it was my first concert. His music and writing shaped my life ❤❤❤
Absolutely loved this interview. I wish he had gone into some discussion about Symphony or Damn, which I believe is still his best work, but still, it’s just good to hear his insight and some behind the scenes on his life and career post Sony. There’s a Part 2 here somewhere…
