I love watching it because it reminded me when I was a young boy going fishing with my family. During the rainstorm and finding a stream coming into a lake and bluegill spawning. As fast as you could put a hook and bait in you were pulling fish out. It got to the point where we could put a bear hook in and pulled fish out. On the other side of the Rock that we were behind. Was raining bluegill and other panfish. Our folks were laughing. Thank you for the great video.
You can tell by my name how much I loved to fish for togs. First off there is a special hook for them, I probably have 100 in the basement. A 40 or 50 pound test leader works best. If you buy rigs you will go broke fast. Tautogs have two sets of teeth, that's why it is really hard to catch them. My favorite bait was fiddler crab which I used to catch in a creek near my house. Someone mentioned clams and that is an excellent bait along with believe it or not sandworms. I'll close with this piece of advice. If a major storm or even a hurricane is 2-5 days away the togs along with many other larger species go nuts attempting to feed. I had a spot by a jetty that was approximately in two feet of water near high tide. There would be bite after bite but a solid majority of them would be throwbacks. I am so thankful that they are hard to catch commercially, if not they would be close to extinction.
Great video again. We have similar species of wrasse here in Britain. I use limpets for bait which work well but the best bait for a big wrasse is a whole crab with the shell on.

For your recommendations, you definitely don't need a long rod to tog. It just has to have to have enough back bone. Tbh shorter rods you have more control. I use a 7ft heavy and it works perfect. Also braided line works well but rocks cut it up like butter, mono works perfectly fine for detecting hits. Ive been toggin for about 10 years and found these to be the most comfortable for toggin
Brandon i use sand flea before n i caught yellow jack small ones on that but green crab i still don't use yet i may have to try it / mostly i use is Shrimp, Sand fleas, Clamp, Squid, Muscles, Small Fishes

Fished for blackfish in NY and NJ for years. Start with half green crabs. If the bite is on and there’s larger fish to target just cut off the claws and send down a whole crab. It’ll weed out the smaller fish sometimes. They do get finicky though. Sometimes they prefer Asian crabs. Some people use white crabs. It all changes and depends but default starting bait was always a half green crab with legs and claws cut off.
When using crab for bait i use bait elastic to whip it to the hook stops bait stealers its a super fine elastic thread wrap the crap to the hook 4 or 5 wraps round the bait and it cast better and stays on the hook.
When i get pulled into rocks by snapper or grouper if you open the bail some times they swim out when they don’t feel the tension of the line. I have a couple videos on my channel if me doing it with red snapper.

when i was 12yrs old I saved my $$ from delivering papers to buy my very first NEW reel and it was the Garcia Mitchell 300.. came with 2 spools.. I used it for fresh and saltwater.. never failed me and i still have it 50yrs later. ;)
I found out a long time ago when fishing around rocks to use metal coat hangers. Cut a piece about 10" straight and make a little eye at one end and offset the end a little to where the end is even with the rest of the straight shaft. I usually attach it to a swivel eye and loop the hooks with leader about 10" above like you used to loop the oval weights. This don't get caught like other sinkers because they stay vertical when you have tension on it. Give it a try it might take a little to make them, but you don't lose them as much, and it's cheap. Great vids, you can improve your rig by tightening your crabs using an invisible fishing elastic, so you can't get rid of bait stealers. Greetings from Morocco.
I never used a green crab but blue crabs are very common down here and that’s what I usually use when I go fishing. We live line them and the results are always positive. Love the video ❤️😊

I respect your humanity of every living creature regardless of its species,i think you just got me back into fishing down state again in delaware im a delawaren . i use 7ft 6 inch ODM rod fast/ moderate action with a shimano stradic 4000.. these poles can pull in 120lb tarpon but still sensitive enough for black fish. i used to be a st croix fan until i got my first ODM and i have 10 ft odm surf rod as well. i would give odm a shot.
green crab work better for bait but sand fleas aren't that bad, plus they stay on the hook easier. I also love tog/blackfish fishing and your vids. Keep up the good work!

Skipper, I love your know-how and the way you explain everything so it's easy to understand. That being said, it's kinda painful watching you reel in a fish by just cranking with the rod high. Pull, crank down, pull, crank down; it's a lot easier. Love your channel!

Nice videos. I liked this one. It's so true that when fishing for tog from the jetties, that you shouldn't need to cast out a country mile. I also lob just a short distance and feel for the rocks. The braided line will help you figure out hard bottom and soft bottom. I've been fishing for blackfish (sometimes unsuccessfully) for over forty years. I have found that green crabs work well in the Long Island Sound and the ocean, but sand fleas work well closer to shore. It makes sense since they are found closer to shore. I've also found that shrimp, clams, white-leggers, fiddlers asian crabs and hermits all have their moments. I personally don't leave for the ocean without white-leggers or greens. If I'm fishing off the beach, jetty or bulkhead, then I'm more likely to use green, sand fleas or calicos.
You should just use your Saragosa. I have the 6000 and I use it all the time to catch tog from shore up here in Rhode Island. It has the power and fast retrieval to easily pull the big boys from the rocks. My pb from is 23.5 inch using that reel

both are great, in florida both work but in Long Island growing up I used crabs [fiddler or green] as no fleas up there... down here the beaches are free bait shops if folk know what to look for
I’ve had better luck with crabs for larger tautog. The sand fleas have had great days also. I truly think if they are biting those little suckers will eat either. Great vid!
Hey, we use green crab in the UK all the time they are only really an awsome bait when they are peeling though (moulting). over here we call it peeler crab and its an amazing bass bait.
Where do you get sand fleas brother? In the Northeast here in Rhode Island and the Cape Cod , we’re using green crabs . It’s great here . Love your videos boy
Hey senkoskipper I tried using green crabs for the first time also last week, but I guess I was In the wrong spot got no bites😭, sometimes it's hard to find spots for fishing because everyone is so secretive but I appreciate everything you and the misses do and you are very inspirational, also as a suggestion I would love to see a vid on the difference in fishing lines , I know there are plenty of vids out there about this subject but I want to see one #senkostyle 😎

when you trim off the legs and claws, throw them in the water around the area you are fishing, it will sure chum the waters and prime the 'tog to bite when you throw the half crab. Also, step on the crab while it's on the hook (make sure you dont actually hook your shoe). This will release the juice and attract the 'tog out of its hole.
This is the best video for me because I grew up in that town and didn't know I loved fishing until age 23 and now I'm just like. What was I doing! I grew up messing with the sand fleas at the beach none of the fishermen ever asked me for them though. 🐙🐙🐙 All the way for them.
Hi Brendon. If u cant finish those sand fleas, juz wash em up deep fry em whole. They cook up real quick. After they get all crispy, toss em in some salt, pepper, n maybe some paprika or cayenne for heat. If u can find some salted egg yolk, u can toss em in that too. Dun worry. They're edible. They are serving those on the beaches in Phuket. Cheers!
Nice video! One tip.. that one green crab can give you four pieces of bait. Fish goes for the smell of the crab. so the smallest piece can get you a big fish.
Black fishing is my favorite, when fishing in the rocks you need a short boat pole so you can bring them up quick. If you have a long pole your chances of getting snagged in the rocks are very high. And it is true that you have to wait for the second bite because blackfish nibble first than they suck the crab in after. Up in New York I would use clam when they are small cause their teeth are soft, as they get bigger I would use fiddler crabs, when they get even bigger I use green crabs. I never tried sand crabs but I caught more blackfish with fiddlers than any other bait.
"Crabe vert" in french , my fav bait of all time , personnaly i dont cut them at all (exept legs tip), more le crabe is big more le fish is ! Cheers from France .
We call them Tatoug here in MA theyre always in the rocks when they bite you gotta reel em in fast or they bring your line into the rocks and you get snagged smh they're SUPER strong and can get HUGE
I just have one question why take the shell off. Wouldn't leaving the shell on and hooking through it make it a tougher piece of bait? Harder to steal?
