Seeing sand in your sight glass after performing a backwash cycle? Relax, It's perfectly normal! In this video I explain what's happening as well as give a quick demonstration showing the sand buildup as well as how to clear. If you're getting sand in your sight glass while rinsing or even sand flowing back into your pool watch till the end for possible causes and solutions.
Forgot to mention:
1. If you see excess sand out the drain port or in the sight glass during a backwash check your sand levels, you may have put to much sand in the filter. The central stand pipe should be marked with fill level.
2. If your sight glass is green/cloudy and you want to clean it switch the pump to closed (while turned off), unscrew the sight glass, and give it a good cleaning.

Thank you so much for the kind words and visiting the channel! There is 4 of us pumping (pun intended) out videos all the time, so hopefully you'll find additional videos useful as well.. You will have to endure a fair amount of gaming videos though as we're essentially all nerds. ;) Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to respond!

Hi, I just watched this video about the filter and looked at some of the questions to see if there was mention of the same problem and noticed there were no responses. So I've subscribed. Hope I can get an answer to my question. Thanks.

I have had an issue with sand getting back into my pool and as I watched your video, I am wondering if the issue is due to what you are describing. I have a TAG 100 that holds 600 lbs of sand. I was noticing sand in my pool last September (2023) and had a company out that replaced the sand and laterals. The old laterals and standpipe were not damaged but I had them replaced anyway. My multiport valve was 13 years old so I replaced that myself and had the company check it out to make sure it was installed correctly. It was. Fast forward to this Spring and I am opening my pool. We got a heavy rain and I ran the backwash for about 10 minutes to reduce amount of water in pool; then restarted the pump. Its a variable speed running about 15-18 lbs at the multiport gauge on faster setting. I did not run the rinse after backwash (never have) and noticed a lot of sand in the pool. Not sure if the problem I have is similar to what you show in the video? I did not quite understand though in your video, how sand would work its way out of the waste/backwash line into a return in the pool though. How does that sand, that should only be in the waste line get back into the return lines?? Did not understand that in your video. Second related question: should i continue to see sand in the sight bubble as the level of the sand gets lower. Thanks.

Hello I purchased Quickrete 20/40 graduation Swimming Pool Sand at my local pool store. I add the sand to the pump. Add the chemicals a couple days after that . I back washed it like I didn’t rinse it the first time I didn’t realize that the second time there was too much water in the pool so I empty some of the water through the skimmer and then I back washed it to get some more water out and then I rinsed it . I did it for about minute but there is still sand coming out of the pump into the pool. So I’m not sure if I need to redo that process again but I can’t do anything until Sunday because of adding the chemicals so I had to wait for two weeks. Hope I didn’t confuse you but this is all new to me first time pool owner. I keep noticing after I vacuum and the next day there’s a little bit more sand so I’m not sure if I didn’t do it right the first time so any recommendations for me. Thank you

Did you see my previous response on the other video? I'm certain the problem is your sand. You need 20 grade, and you were giving 20/40. So the smaller sand granules are getting sucked up through the laterals and back into your pool. This is a video of me having the exact same issue: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E2d-MeCUv4M.html

I keep finding sand at the bottom of my pool and its a brand new Intex pump. Intex sent a new top piece (valve) and pipe (not laterals). I replaced both and sure enough, sand still in the pool? I'm so frustrated. I am using #20 sand. Any help would be very appreciated.

I just noticed my sight glass is leaking - but mine has holes in the tip - with a little piece of rubber that flaps around when I'm backwashing and sometimes it covers the holes but most of the time water is coming out during the backwash process. My water level seemed to be going down so I went to check the pump and noticed water coming out the holes. WTH???!!!! I'm going to check the o-ring/gasget now as well, but it wasn't leaking from around the connection...
@GuidingBoltGaming

I haven't seen that before, I would check the manual for that one.

@@GuidingBoltGaming I figured it was the backwash leaking so since the sight glass had holes in it (to keep it from building up pressure), water was coming through the backwash and leaking out the sight glass. I took it off and the gasget was well worn. I also took off the top dial thing on top of the sand filter and it obviously needed a new gasget as well. I took it to the pool store and turns out you can't just replace the gasget for that model, you have to replace the whole top part. Geez. It was about $125. It was definitley easy to replace and worked like a charm. I also replaced the gasget on the sight glass. I saved the pool tech service call fee, so that's a win. And now I know how that part works.

Ours fill with sand. It’s a new install, but my husband hooked it up before I got home from work yesterday. Not sure if it’s happening because we didn’t backwash the pump first, but woke up this morning and sand was standing in the bottom of the pool and sand is coming out in the backwash. I’m at a loss because I paid $450 for this thing.

Hey Stace - Sorry to hear that, I know how frustrating it is when you want to enjoy the pool but end up fighting with it instead. Not back washing it wouldn't have caused this issue. If you're seeing that much sand I have to assume a broken/missing lateral, or standpipe issue. I would open up the tank, empty out the sand, and inspect the main pipe/laterals first and go from there. If that all looks good check the sand size to make sure it's the right grade.

Guiding Bolt well, I think the problem was the filter compartment. My husband didn’t tighten something and we had a leak and since fixing it, no sand. Even fixed the pressure issue. Thanks so much for your reply!

So I just bought a new house with this intro pool and sand filter. I’m so lost and frustrated. First ours has not been used in a year and has quite a bit of sand in glass. Also I’m staying at zero psi on my gauge. I dumped the sand and am buying new tomorrow. When I hook it up it is pulling water from pool and pushing it back in just fine. I’m just so lost with what to do the pool is full of water finally after draining but is super cloudy! Please help is needed?

On mine it was connected to the waste port so as long as I didn't use a filter option connected to that then yes. Otherwise, the water would leak out the sight glass opening instead of the waste port.

@GuidingBoltGaming
@GuidingBoltGaming 3 года назад
If you have sand in the bottom of your pool after a filter session there's a good chance you have the wrong sand. Otherwise, check the documentation to see what the manufacturer suggests and compare it with the sand you purchased.

My looking glass has a small amount of sand and it empty’s of water. Isn’t it supposed to always be filled with water?
@GuidingBoltGaming
@GuidingBoltGaming 3 года назад
It may not always be filled with water. It's connected to the drain port outlet. So for instance if my pump was on the closed setting, i could remove the drain port and actually see the opening to the sight glass through that port. With that in mind, if you did a backwash/rinse cycle, moved the setting to closed (preventing water flow), put the drain cap back on, and then changed the setting to filter you may not have any if minimal water in the sight glass. However, if you then changed the setting temporarily to backwash you would see the sight glass fill up again. Make sense? Also, remember never to change the tank setting while the pump is on!

This video shows what I mean. Notice at the end of the video the sight glass is empty. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HmYlGuX5o1k.html

Bought the pool in March it was working well. Last week i started noticing sand in the pool after a backwash. I see it on the sight glass and doesn't clear out after the rinse. I'm getting frustrated and I'm thinking it's the laterals..... But not sure cause the system is new since March. Intex 2100 GPH Any advice.
@GuidingBoltGaming
@GuidingBoltGaming 4 года назад
I agree, I wouldn't suspect laterals either if it's been working this whole time. Unless the tank took a hit somehow or was shifted/moved I would suspect the laterals are still fine. Is it primarily you that operates the pump? I'm wondering if maybe someone had the pump running while changing the settings and maybe the spider gasket is damaged. Either way you're likely going to have to drain the water out and give it an inspection to see if anything jumps out. Good luck!

@GuidingBoltGaming
@GuidingBoltGaming 3 года назад
If it's the same model tank I have then it should unscrew. If it won't budge (and you have a different tank) I would try to confirm that it's actually removable. If the sight glass itself is cracked I would check with your local hardware store for some sort of plastic sealant.

If you have sand in the glass and it's a lateral or pipe issue; will it also cause your pump to run at a lightly higher pressure? Mine is running in the yellow but not rising either.
@GuidingBoltGaming
@GuidingBoltGaming 3 года назад
Are you seeing sand come back through the return? That would be an indicator if there is a cracked standpipe/lateral. Do you recall the pressure gauge staying green in the past? I've seen multiple posts in message boards about Intex customers stating their gauge is reading incorrectly, even right out of the box.
@dmh1505
@dmh1505 3 года назад
@@GuidingBoltGaming I recall last season it working properly. I've just opened up this year and a mistake was not checking the gauge right off the bat. A head saying in the sight glass last year and checked the laterals and didn't find anything but I did not check the pipe. It's about 1/4 to 1/2 full which seems much too extreme. 6 laterals are not too expensive I'm just going to order some new ones and try that. Also maybe a new gauge. The gauge is not Rising neither is it falling but steady
@dmh1505

The guage was always ok including last year. All is working ok seemingly tho. I'll prob get a new guage on that issue. I have almost 1/4 sand in the glass now. Rinse cycle does'nt clear it at all.

If it has a waste port I suppose you could install one. However, I kind of feel like that's more trouble than it's worth. I would just periodically open up the waste port and collect a little sample of water to review.
