Sand pendulums are an easy and beautiful method for students of all ages to learn a bit about the harmonic motion. These devices are easy to build and can be adjusted to give a variety of patterns. A pendulum that begins with two point of support can alter the periods of the pendulum as it moves on two perpendicular axis at the same time. The video gives simple instructions on the materials needed and how to adjust the configuration to vary the design.
Note on comments: I appreciate seeing comments positive or negative, and learn from helpful criticism. However, I am a middle school teacher and many of my students visit this site, I will remove comments that I feel are offensive or inappropriate.

Thank you very much especially for this video. I am a Physics teacher in Germany and I just did this Experiment with my students today. We don't have the Equipment at the School to do Lissajous-figures electronically (with different frequencies in certain ratios), but this showed me a way to do it simply mechanically - and with a lot of fun. Also material that is cheaply provided for several Groups at the same time. My students are a last-year high School class with Focus on science. So given a description they have to set up the Experiment themselves. The Task was also combined with simulations on a CAS graphical calculator. (Sorry for the capitals - the Computer keeps thinking I'm writing German, not English.)

Hi Ursula, Glad it can help. I've always enjoyed seeing these results done a number of ways. IF you go back in my videos, I did a similar one that captured the patterns digitally using a cheap point and shoot camera and a small LED light and another one that uses a laser pointer bouncing the beam from rotating mirrors. I haven't posted them but I have a couple harmonic drawing tables that draw the patterns with a pen, I will eventually post when I get to it. thanks for posting your comment, always nice to hear when someone else has tried a demonstration

no, the period is only dependent on the lenght of the pendulum and gravitational acceleration, but the mass does affect it's inertia.

Isn't the gravitational acceleration based on the mass though

+M A R V I N C A S I N O No, of course not, all objects fall at the same speed, don't they? (if we ignore friction) The gravitic force is indeed proportional to mass and since: a= F/m therefore the gravitic acceleration is not dependent on mass. Ps: I'm studying physics at college, and I learned this very thing (pendulums and Lissajous patterns) last semester, so I know for a fact that I'm right.

If the pendulum could oscillate long enough, would Earth rotation *visibly* affect the pattern, Foucault's Pendulum -style?

@Malfehzan
@Malfehzan 7 лет назад
I'm asking if it would have a PERCEIVABLE effect on a pendulum that's already dancing a fancy multi-axis dance. Would it show on such an already complex pattern. Obviously, someone who's already set up a pendulum and launched it along all sorts of curves *might* have seen things that *I*, in my 1-room appartment, couldn't.

I love this Channel because in muy country our teachers don't do any type of experiment, we only learn theory and sometimes it's difficult to understand what the physical try ti mean without a practical aplicacion, but i can come here and see It. Would the sands weight at different times effect the movement of the pendulum
@YeanyScience
@YeanyScience 7 лет назад
not the period but it will slow down faster
@anthocyaninin
@anthocyaninin 7 лет назад
The change in mass doesn't directly affect the period of the pendulum, but the change in the center of mass increases the length of the pendulum, which increases the period. The heavier the container, the smaller the affect of the draining sand. With 500 mL plastic container that is 20 cm tall with negligible mass and a 2 m pendulum, the period will change by up to 2% as the center of mass moves 8 cm away from the initial center of mass. This also impacts the Lissajous curve, as an initial ratio of 2:1 would drift toward 1.95:1 if the center of mass moves 5 cm lower (1.93:1 for 8 cm).
