I needed this video! My boss has just thrown me to the wolves this week and I needed a better way of sanding a full room without all the dust. Gonna try this out, thank you!

Thank you so much! I’m an automotive painter and body guy that’s been living in a dusty house since I bought it in December. And although I don’t typically wet sand cars just because of the mess from the dusty water drying in crevices, I also don’t sand cars in my living room so I don’t worry about it. I’ve been getting better about not needing to sand as much but like I said I paint cars so nothing really transfers over.

Great technique and well explained! I am going to use this today actually, thanks! BTW while watching this I kept thinking, I’m being taught plastering tips by Christopher Walken :) Has anyone ever told you that you sound a little like him?

A solid demo of wet sanding with a sponge - I'd been wondering how this was done, as dry sanding the first room I skim coated was not fun in the least. How often do you need to wash the sponge out? I'm wondering what happens to any water-and-plaster paste that is left behind on the wall - does it dry to dust, or does the glue reactivate enough to stick it down?
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 4 года назад
Get a few of them so that you don’t have to wash any till you’re done. I I washed mine out when I finished.

Very time consuming and labor intensive. Learn how to use a mud knife.
@undercrackers56
@undercrackers56 3 года назад
Try sanding wetter. You will be amazed at how effective it is. Less effort is required, it cuts faster, you clean your sponge less and the result is amazing. Sure it leaves muddy crap behind, but that can be quickly cleaned off with a car sponge and clean water.

Hi Spencer - First time skim coater here planning to apply two thin coats and sand between per the instructions in your other videos. Would love to minimize dust. 1. Will this technique work with a pole or orbital sander? 2. Should I sand the entire surface between coats or just the highs (aka follow the instructions in this vid) Thank you!

Didn’t work out too well for me. I feel that as I sprayed and the dust stuck to my sponge it kept on loosing its abrasiveness. And when I washed the sponge as it got too dirty it lost even more of its grit.

its just air. oxygen doresnt escape nor isolate itself from the air to dry. great video otherwise :-)
@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 3 года назад
But Phil, I appreciate your scientific response but what does the air consist of? Oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen… What else? Is oxygen a completely false statement?
@philindeblanc
@philindeblanc 3 года назад
@@spencercolgan We compress air to process oxygen out of it, and it yields less than a 20% return to the air ratio...so, yes, its really not oxy to start with, and even after compression and processing of the air to make oxygen out of it, we really dont have oxygen "present" in the air. But I AM gonna be using your well thought out procfess in sanding my skimcoat :-) Oh, and you asked what else...Air can be used to manufacture argon, helium, xenon, hydrogen, nitrogen, CO@ with presence of other matter (see water-gas process/BASF) . None of these things are "IN" the air. they need to be processed, and altered. Air really is just that, air. Don't ask me what water consists of...we will be here a while, HA!
@n.-v.4789
@n.-v.4789 3 года назад
@@philindeblanc Well said, never heard of oxygen being air :D. And these ''air bubbles'' appear not only when reskimming on top of uncompleted dried coat but on dry coats as well. It's still a mystery to this day on how to get rid of them in the first place but my trick is I add Dawn soap and water when mixing my mud..not 100% efficent but helps plus the plaster glides easier to boot ;)

@spencercolgan
@spencercolgan 2 года назад
Please don’t send each coat let’s go as thin as possible on each coat in order not to have to sand each coat; be prepared to do three full coats and then a fourth and perhaps even a fifth of what I call a polish code and you will barely have to sand at all

Why put paper on left and right side of the wall when on the left you guys got primer on the paper and the paper wasn’t taped down and the primered paper flopped onto the wall 😅👌 A professional would cut edges in with brush with no tape bleed throughs and no primer on wall
