Thank you and enjoy!

The body was sanded through 320 grit, grain raised with water and then sanded with 400 grit sandpaper. Vintage Maple Transtint Dye (water based) was applied by hand with a rag and then sanded back to 400 grit. I do this to pop the curl in cherry wood because the stain is only left in the end grain (curl) providing additional contrast as well as unifying all of the woods used (binding also gets the same stain)
Then it was sealed with two wash coats of shellac (light sanding in between coats) to seal the wood and prepare for padding (French Polish). It’s critical to seal the wood well before padding because I use mineral oil as lubricant when polishing and you don’t want oil trapped in the raw wood. It will stain and prevent proper curing of the shellac.
Next up, French Polish!

Very nice video, thoroughly enjoyed it! Music, atmosphere, and process. Did you make a video for the french polish? I'm refinishing my guitar and would love to see the process like this. Thanks for the video!

Do you use a sanding seal before or after staining?
@MustCreateThings
@MustCreateThings 4 года назад
I don’t use sealer when french polishing but believe sealer is used when I have them sprayed with lacquer. Hope all is well.

Great video thanks. I am trying to stain a maple Stratocaster neck and twice the grain has raised. Do I seal it first? Why has that done it twice? Thanks!!

It will always raise a little bit. If you sand too much between the water then it will continue forever. It’s a dance. Maybe try sanding a little less between. After staining for me is still a little raised. I knock if the really bad stuff and let the rest be. Good luck and be well.

Hi, I enjoyed the video. I have a Peavey bass guitar that was made in 1991. It has a hideous 90's pink to red fade paint job which covers a maple body. I would like to sand all the paint off and stain it to it's natural appearance. Do you have any tips or specific videos to guide me? I am not much of a wood worker but I think I can sand and stain a little bit.

Unfortunately I’m not versed well in finishing or finishing videos. I can tell you that I would sand by hand although it will take longer and go through grits up to at least 320. Before you finish raise the grain with water by wiping water on with a damp, not soaked, cloth and letting it dry. You will notice the wood gets rough. Lightly sand this roughness off with the last grit you used. For finishes that are easy to apply I’ve really liked Osmo Polyx. I don’t know what type of stain is best under it and would recommend testing on scrap before you dig into your guitar. You can do it. And if you mess up, anything can be fixed. Good luck!!!

I have a lacquer finished guitar.. which i think really affects the over all tone. Is it possible for a luthier to make it an open pore finish?
@MustCreateThings
@MustCreateThings 3 года назад
Sure is. Some use oil as a finish and there are many to choose from. I’ve used Truoil on necks and plan to try a product made by Osmo soon.

Can i use nitrocellulose varnish as a sealer? Please reply

I’m not sure. If you have any doubts do test on a piece of scrap. I wish I was more knowledgeable in finishes. Thanks for stopping by!

Hello, which kind of stain can I use?
@MustCreateThings
@MustCreateThings Год назад
I use Trans Tint Dye from Homestead Finishing. It can be mixed with water or alcohol. If you use water it will raise the grain so some prefer to use alcohol as the thinner. Good Luck!

Really, really nice work. I'm going to be staining and finishing a custom Tele from Warmoth parts (Swamp Ash body and Quartersawn one-piece maple neck). I'm planning on attempting a sort of honey-cherry burst using aniline dyes and garnet shellac. I'm going to topcoat the body with some water-based poly and finish the neck with Tru-oil. Looking for pro-tips here on RU-vid.

We are all doing good here. I have had a solid body Weissenborn created. Man is it loud. Like a regular electric. And Richard Wilson put about fifty resonator holes under the top Blackwood veneer which made the wood very sonorous and light. If i am listening to your cherry wood I’m thinking you did a great job!
