@@adamtalkstech - I work for a production company in Los Angeles and we buy A LOT of drives. We used to use the SanDisk Pro G-RAIDS religiously, but the vendor we buy from is really up on what's being discontinued and the new things that are available. I've been playing with the Project Drives and the Mirrors for the past couple months and really liking their performance. Your video was super informative in a lot of ways but I mainly benefited from the portion where you explain how to "disable" the Mirror feature and just use it for it's full capacity with no back up. I was in a pinch and needed to load 10TB's of media but all I had on the shelf was 12TB mirrors.
I would prefer the power switch on the back as it is, prevents accidental pressing and if you have any inquisitive kids around an "oooh i wonder what this button does" mishap.
Honestly, if your data valuable to you or your business RAID enclosures are not the way to go. All the major losses I have had have been RAID enclosures which is why I eventually bought a Synology NAS (I now have 2). The DSM is what makes the difference to the RAID enclosure, it manages the disks, scrubs data and gives more redundancy options. I'm not saying it doesn't have it's place and they are cheaper than a decent NAS, but it is bottom tier long term data storage and the price is way too much for what it is.
I’ve used some of the synology stuff but I do really like the simplicity of DAS vs NAS. A lot of people also just aren’t ready to get into the world of picking drives, managing DSM, etc. I know when I had mine a few years ago it felt really intimidating. I definitely will need to make some decisions soon on how I want to manage my data long term though. What synology stuff are you rocking these days?
@@adamtalkstech I am no boffin myself, I probably only make use of 20-30% of what the NAS DSM offers (Docker, Remote Data etc). I started with a 918+ 4 (disk) which got filled pretty rapidly, then got a really good deal on a 5151 (5 bay) altogether about 46 TB. I have only had one issue, which was a blown component on the power rail which I could probably have fixed myself, but had a pro tech do it for £70. Otherwise it has been rock solid. My only worry is transferring such large storage to a new NAS when like everything I have to upgrade (in maybe 5-10 years). 1Gbps is slow when transferring TB's of data. A problem for future me!
@@CulturedThugPoster how did you end up migrating to the 5 bay? I think that’s another thing that has given me pause before as far as how to add more disks and have the thing rebuild itself. Sounds like I need wd and synology to sponsor a video for me
curious if you saw any performance drops using the TB port on back of the Mirror? I see about a 10-15% drop in r/w on drives connected to my Studio Display vs directly connected to Mac. Wonder if you see anything similar when utilizing the daisy-chain on this unit. small detail, but curious lol. Thanks m8, absolutely love this channel 👌
I haven’t tested it that way very much but I run both of these off my sonnet thunderbolt 4 dock and get very close speeds as if it were just plugged straight into the Mac
Been looking at getting this but it’s annoying how it says RAID in the name and I thought if I buy a 24tb one that it would be 24tb with redundancy…I’m still getting one though as it works with backblaze and will be cheap!
Hi Adam, Thank you for your review. I have two questions. 1. Can you eject the pro blade only or do you have eject the entire device; 2. Does the pwoer adapter support 220V input? Thank you.
The unit ships configured in RAID 1 and it is quite a task to reconfigure it to RAID 0. I still have not accomplished this despite following the exact instructions. For this reason alone, I wish I never bought this. I paid $1,500 for it. I now have to try and find support to do this.
I did follow your instructions. I ejected the unit and pulled out the power cord. I moved the two dip switches up and then held in the reset button and put the power cord back in. I get the flashing light in the front and still hold the reset button for a few more seconds. I unplug the power again and then power it up. But I do not get the "initialize" message on my iMac. When I check the space capacity it still says 18TB. This is a new iMac and I suspect there is a step I am missing that you may not have covered. If you can think of something I might need to try, that would be awesome. Otherwise I will reach out to the folks at B&H. They helped me last time I bought one of these but the wait to get a tech who knows these units is quite long.@@adamtalkstech

@@WhatEver-wr7gp Sorry that's annoying. Its just strange because I did it a couple times and filmed it multiple times to make sure I didn't miss anything Was the light flashing when you plugged it back in? Also I'd do it without having the thunderbolt plugged in. support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detailweb/a_id/51098/~/steps-to-change-raid-levels-on-a-g-raid-mirror
i have a 4TB ssd and 2x 5 TB HDD backup . What your recommendation to get going get the G Raid for back up and work of my SSD or pro blade ? I do love when everything is fast but yes price is sure a factor.
Both would be ideal, get the biggest G Raid mirror you can afford and start building a collection of pro blades to work off of. or just get the G Raid Mirror + 1 San Disk PRO G40 and use the Pro g40 as your edit drive and use the mirror as your backups.
@@adamtalkstech that's so perfect it's a well built case with cooling and ability to replace the drives and have sandisk ssd reader and TB3 is the perfect match for the prodock 4 that I also have thanks for getting back to me on this
What is the read/write speed of the inserted Pro Blade into the Raid Mirror? I read that the G-Drive Project with Pro Blade slot is USB3 and is not Thunderbolt and thus slow. What I'm asking is whether the Pro Blade when inserted into the RAID Mirror as fast as when using it in the Pro Blade Transport? Thanks
I think I put this in the vid but if not I apologize. Pro blade + Raid Mirror = 950Mbps on M1 Max MBP Pro Blade + Transport = 2000MBPS if your computer supports usb 3.2x2, which Mac’s don’t, so still 950MBPS Pro blade + Station = 2500MBPS real world speeds on mac
@@adamtalkstech Thank you. Yeah, I have a M1 Studio. And just bought a 4TB Transport. 950Mbps is fast enough for me to edit videos on. Obviously the Blasé Station would be ideal. But I think the RAID is the next purchase to back “backup” storage and Blade access.
