Sandy Koufax and Yom Kippur ..... JEWS & BASEBALL - (2010) 

I don't think I can put in words, what this meant to me at as a Jew from a town so small it had a tiny synagogue and no observing Jewish children my age.

From this baptized Roman Catholic, GREAT FOR YOU, SANDY! Not only are you the greatest pitcher of all time, you also just about are the classiest person baseball has ever had.

I grew up in Africa and (at the age of 12) had never heard of Sandy Koufax till he signed my cast in 1968. I had just been flown home and after surgery on my right leg, a friend of the family took me and my buddies out to a Tiger Baseball game. I had to use the elevator because of my cast. Mr. Koufax was a commentator at the game and we wound up in the same elevator. I lost the signature, because due to the heat and humidity of Nigeria the cast cracked right down the middle of the signature, but I will have the memory for life.

The stance that Sandy Koufax took on sitting out the Yom Kippur 1965 Workd Series opening game made him a hero and icon to American Jews that remains in effect today.

Don Drysdale pitched that day and was hit hard. When Walter Alston took him out, he told Drysdale, "I wish you were Jewish, too."

as a jew who grew up in premulticultural usa, where there was little to no acknowledgement of our religion in public school where all the christian holidays were recognized and primary, this meant a lot to me and my brother.

Sandi was probably still dealing with the mental stress that Bob Uecker (Mr. Baseball) had hit a homerun off of him the year before😂.

I always thought, that Sandy Koufax looked like the creator of the twilight zone tv show , Rod Serling
