Sandy Row is probably amongst the top five most famous streets in Belfast. In days gone by it was known as Carr's Row. Sandy Row is one of the oldest residential areas of Belfast. It was a hive of industry commerce as well as being a place to live. It was a bustling shopping district. At the start of the 20th century there were said to be 127 shops based on the street. It was also famous for its pubs. Most like the Klondyke bar are long gone. Its growth in population was in large part due to the expansion of the linen industry in Rowland Street. The name Sandy Row derived from the sandbank which abutted the road that followed the high-water mark resulting from the flow off the tidal waters of the Lagan River estuary. For over two thousand years, the road along the sandbank was the principal thoroughfare leading south from Carrickfergus. In 1941 Blythe street was Row was bombed by German bombers during the Belfast Blitz. Thirteen civilians were killed. During the 1900s Sandy Row was a stronghold of loyalism. It saw some of the worst acts of violence of the Troubles. Many folks moved away to escape.
Over the years when the linen factories died, life on Sandy Row was hit hard. Job loss, blighted the area. Many folks moved away to the new outer estates like Belvoir, where houses had their own front and back gardens and trees grew aplenty. Today Sandy Row has been revitalized by new housing but many would admit that despite hard work from many on the ground, Sandy Row is only a pale reflection of its former self.

Great stuff Siobhan. There is so much history to Belfast. Sadly most of our main streets are dying as regards traditional family shops/pub/churches/cafes/restaurants. High rents, high rates, traffic wardens and the likes of Amazon have dealt them a killer blow. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

brilliant, last time i walked down Sandy Row was about 10 years ago , have to do it again soon. First time was in the 70's and what a change. I remember record shops, butchers, fish and chips and all you wanted.

Hi Fergus. I'm afraid Sandy Row and so many other Belfast and beyond streets have suffered so much loss, due the rise of Amazon, traffic wardens, high rent, high rates, high electric and gas charges. Sadly Sandy Row is in a state of decline. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.

Hello Tom , great stuff nice to see they left a couple of the old building standing , I hope you got the bike sorted , you may have to carry some WD40 or the old standby quick start . not the best for the motor if you use it too much but it will get you out of a bind . Thanks Tom.

Great video Tom, it's amazing how quickly places change when you start pulling down the old buildings and replace them with new ones. Looking at the old photos at the beginning of the video made me wonder if there isn't a good selection around to make up a book,The History of Sandy Row in old photos, that would be nice to look back on. By the way Tom I've already sent one post too you on this one but it wouldn't go, and kept telling me I wasn't connected which was nonsense It was playing up for whatever reason but now back on track but I have noticed all your other post's have been deleted. I sent you an email yesterday did you receive that one, Oh dear when this happens it's so annoying.

Many thanks Chris. This complete transformation has gone on for decades. There isn't a lot of the old and the traditional left I'm afraid. Ah no worries Chris. I thing I might be accountable this time for the RU-vid 'shenanigans'. I put my first Sandy Row video up but after looking at it again, I saw that I had forgotten to include the last 5 minutes of the video. I tried to answer any posts but then I deleted the video and put another longer one up. I got your e mail back about the Titanic hero guy .

Really enjoyed this video Tom. Used to walk through Sandy Row from Great Victoria bus station to my mates house on the Lisburn Road when he was studying at bible college. He used to work in the filling station above the back entrance of the city hospital on the Donegal Road. Don t know if it's still there or not. Can't believe how it has changed since the mid to late 90s. I only recognise the Boyne bridge and the row of shops where Reid's shoes is. The old Rangers supporters club building is gone too. Just be 20 years since I last set foot here. Great video and God bless from West Tyrone.

Hi Tom, it's been a while since I've commented, although I've seena few of your recent vids. This one of Sandy Row/Boyne Bridge is interesting, partly from something my late s/father told me. Sandy Row was particularly well known for its number of pubs; I can't recall how many there were, but certainly a dozen or more. He told me of a quiz where the participants were asked how many were on the Row. The answers came - some said 10, other said a dozen, etc etc, but nobody got it right, and the reason being the postal addresses, because as with all other buildings, the address always refers to where the front door is, and apparently of all the pubs there, only one had its front door on Sandy Row, while all of the others were in the side streets, even though the frontages were on the Row! What a sneaky question, but great fun! I knew there was a Blitz plaque in the area, but old age and loss of memory robbed me. I should have guessed it was Blythe St. I heard they were building a brannd new, all singing ventral bus station behind Gt Victoria St rail station, and I see from your vid a load of construction going on there, si I presume that's the new staion going up. It's also nice to see Murray's still there, although I do have a photo of it. It's a pity seeing those placards and photo history in situ, because they look pretty dilapidated from wear, tear and graffiti, to the extent that they're a bit of an eyesore. One would have thought that a nice little garden plot where people could go to sit and chat, with a proper construction (something just to cheat the weather) behind to hold the display. Sadly, our councils tend not to bother with such things...c'est la vie! Keep up the good work Tom. Glad to note you are looking well, so stay safe. Best wishes, Reg.

I only found the names of 2 pubs Reg. The Klondyke and the Albion. The Royal bar is still there. Yes the photograph boards badly need renewal! Great to hear from you. Spring is just around the corner but I think we have a chill coming before we get there. I hope you are in good shape. Best wishes from the Castlereagh hills. Tom

Yes I knew about the unbelievable Europa bomb history Paul. I didn't know it was bombed 33 times. And you were there for quite a few of them!!!!! I was in Stranmillis College halls of residence for 4 years in the early 70s and on bad nights we used to get up on to the roof of the mini tower blocks and watch the bombs explode! Yes I must get down and film the new station when it is opened. My brother in law brought many a load of concrete to it. Thanks as always for your kind words. Any word of your book on Lenadoon? I'd give it a shout out on my channel. -If you are ever done in Belfast I'd value a meet up. I'd even buy you an excellent scone and cuppa at Hillmount Garden Centre. ( We are just down the road. ) I've met up with quite few local RU-vidrs. I get so much fun out of the channel. Best wishes from the Belfast Castlereagh hills.
